Breakfast cereal is a grocery budget buster! It's so expensive! And have you looked at the ingredient list??? Sarah shares their family's favorite granola recipe which happens to be cost effective, healthy, and super tasty! This recipe makes a very big batch which will last for weeks. The entire recipe, including the walnuts, costs about $7.50. The same amount of granola from the grocery store would cost more than $10. (Leave out the walnuts and you save even more...but they are so tasty, keep them in!!)
Homemade Granola
Ingredients:
12 cups - old fashioned rolled oats
2 cups- chopped walnuts
1/2 cup - brown sugar
1 cup - coconut oil
2/3 cup - honey
4 teaspoons - vanilla
1/2 tsp salt
Directions:
Mix oats, nuts, brown sugar and salt together.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the oil, honey and vanilla.
Pour over dry mixture and stir to coat thoroughly.
Spread on a sprayed baking sheets and bake at 350 degrees F for 30 minutes.
Stir frequently (every 5 minutes) to ensure even baking. It should be golden brown when it is done.
Add dried fruit and coconut after it is finished baking.
Let it cool on the baking sheet and then break up any large pieces. Store in an airtight container.

*** About Living Traditions Homestead ***
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 2 new videos every week! Wednesday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

I have made granola also and I have found if you heat the oil and honey together in a small kettle on top of the stove it is easier to blend and easier to stir into the dry ingredients. It doesn’t take long to heat it up. Just until honey melts. Hope this helps.

I am a fan of your channel and I don’t know how I previously missed this post. I was looking for recipes to replace breakfast cereal and I happened upon your granola recipe. I don’t really like purchased granola because most of it seems too sweet. Yours has just the right amount of sweetness. I have the third batch that I have made since finding your recipe cooling on the kitchen table. I substituted one cup of pecans and one of sliced almonds for the walnuts and did add the sunflower seeds. I cooked the 2nd and 3rd batch at 325 degrees for 45 minutes without stirring because I wanted bigger chunks of granola. I changed racks midway through and turned the pans front to back also. I really want to thank you for taking the time to share this recipe. This old woman and my husband of many, many years really enjoy this. May God continue to bless you in your endeavors.

We grow seedless grapes which we dehydrate and add to our granola. I do not add brown sugar, because it is white sugar with molasses. Honey and cinnamon and little molasses are healthier then process sugar especially for young people.

All the various cracked whole grains make a porridge superior to off the shelf from the big mills. I like them even better than rolled oats. The downside is the cooking time but they slow-cook in a crock pot beautifully. Cracked corn which is packaged and sold for animal consumption is actually higher in protein and fiber than the canned corn or meal in the stores. 50lbs of corn is only $6.99 at Tractor Supply!! I've been eating it every morning for two weeks. I love it. Turning into a chicken I guess. I've been looking for field corn on the market for quite a while as I figure that corn for human consumption has been bred to have too much sugar. I have an over-active pancreas. My favorite is cracked rye which I crack myself due to shipping and exorbitant pricing; I have a small hand mill which I used while home-brewing beer. Much pricier than the corn of course. The best source for whole rye I've found so far is Montana Flour and Grain but buy two 10lb instead of the 25 lb if you want them to go USPS. It's cheaper than UPS anyway and gets to my PO Box in just a couple days. They sell a cracked wheat which I haven't ordered yet but I'm gonna. Unfortunately they don't sell oat products. Unless you are willing to dehull the whole oats sold for horse fodder don't bother with that. Luckily steel cut is a nice porridge also. The old-fashioned rolled oats will actually micro-wave quickly by the bowl but need to sit for about five minutes before ready.

Hi Sarah, I only recently discovered your channel and I'm loving it. You have a beautiful family. I love seeing your enthusiasm and the joy you seem to find in everything. I regularly make homemade granola too and would like to share a tip I learned on America's Test Kitchen. She poured the granola onto a baking sheet lined with foil and used a potato masher to pat it down firm and level. Then she baked it at 325° for 30-40 minutes , rotating the pan after 15-20 minutes. It doesn't have to be stirred at all. My recipe is very similar so I'm sure they taste similar. Hope you can try this. Thanks for your wonderful videos!!

And another point to add to the cost of this cereal. I can eat 2-3 large bowls of store bought cereal at a sitting. It is not very filling. This stuff here, my wife makes something very similar, I only eat a half of a large bowl and I'm full. So figure cost per oz/lb and consumption. It's WAAAAY cheaper to make your own.

Gmos aren’t bad for you most people don’t even know what it stands for (genetically modified organism) a way of genetically modifying an organism is by selective breeding in plants or animals for the sake of this it’s plants a example of selective breeding in plants is corn corn used to been grass but we’ve taken the bigger seeds from that grass and planted them for generations so eventually the grass seed bunches is our modern corn it’s taken hundreds of years to do this and people like you decide it’s suddenly bad for you without researching anything it’s like the antivax movement people just believe what they want to regardless of the facts that vaccines or gmos Are good for you
