Cheap plasma cutter cutting aluminum. Aluminum plasma cutting might not be as basic as you might think .Depending on what sort of metal cutting you want to cut a plasma cutter might not be the best option for you plasma cutting aluminum depends on the thickness you need to cut? You would think that aluminum being a lot softer would be easier to cut than mild steel ?Check out my video to see what i found out.

When cutting thick aluminum you need to turn your air pressure up because it will melt back together as you’re cutting it. Higher air pressure will blow the melted aluminum away from the cut as you’re cutting it. Thank you for your videos.

Thanks just what I needed was disappointed with my first aluminium cut 6mm, the end finish same as you got with the thicker piece. It seemed strange, so thanks for showing all those examples, it helps a lot

Cutting aluminium , you will always get that edge if you cut with oxygen , same reason why stainless and aluminium is normally cut with Nitrogen (Reactive metals ) . Aluminium transfers heat 4 times faster than carbon steel , thus more amps is needed (copper is 6 times more ) and why plasma and welders is notebly rated eg 12mm/" 1/2" steel and 6mm (1/4) aluminium "Tig welders"

Thanks, yes i didnt even think a 40 amp plasma cutter using just air would cut 1/2 inch aluminium but will hack through it but like you say its very ugly. Thanks cheers pete

The Aluminum will cut cleaner if you brush through the oxide layer with a wire brush prior to cutting. The reason being aluminum melts at a lower temp than the aluminium oxide layer. You'll get much better results if you hit it with a stainless wire brush just prior to cutting it. And dude, get a pair of gloves for cryin out loud lol! Cheers.

The plasma is about 25,000 to 40,000 degrees f. Even in centigrade, that’s plenty hot. Aluminum melts at about 1,200 F while steel melts at about 2,800. So the difference isn’t that much. But since al is so conductive, the heat spreads unevenly.

higher resistance holds heat longer,stays molten longer,aluminium cools real quick due to the air blast cooling further from the plasma nozzle ,a laser is what will cut the aly nice since the beam temp is consistent,any hoo,it comes down to conductivity and thermal resistance.

I was just working on cutting up an aluminum wheel with my Cut-50 plasma cutter. It cuts through fine on the thinner sections (say 10mm) but I'll have to use a reciprocating saw on the thicker sections.

when you cut illuminum cut it with a grinder a little turn use plasma cutter to cut look cleaner

Aluminum needs a shield gas mix for clean cuts. An argon hydrogen mix is typical. Not too fun for a home shop to have a bottle just for it, but if you do enough aluminum cutting it can save your sanity. You can use pure oxygen but ehh....
