Hello everyone! Some notes: 1. The more I review the footage, the more I think I should have called my own battery out even though the referee did not. 2. My driving is indeed noticeably worse than my last tournament. 3. My battle-hardened motors worked extremely well, and I never had one die, so I forgot to even mention them later on. Isn't it nice when things just work?

ok im not a expert on these bot tournaments. heck this is the only fights I've looked at in a long time. but. its not your fault your bot wasn't called out bcs of the battery rule thing. but to me it looked fine. to me the one guy that you knocked out you literally had exposed his battery. yours wasn't exposed it was still in its casing. ive played sports all my life and sometimes people just get away with things. rather it be an accident something happened or intended. you did great and your bot performed well. the judges are thier to call the fight if they see a issue and they didn't see any issue.

As a former tournament admin both in fun local events and larger major video game events, if you get double jeopardy like with lowbot you shouldn't feel bad about speaking up to whoever made the bracket. When a bracket is drafted it shouldn't result in facing someone twice without rounds in between, or at the end of the bracket. If your goal is fun and to improve your robot, this means you face less unique opponents. If your goal is to win, this can be very bad if someone gets the same bad matchup twice. In almost every instance that's either a mistake, or an admin just didn't think about it being a potential problem. It's more fun and more fair for everyone if you let admins know when it happens.
@bami2 Жыл бұрын
Nice! I don't think you should've called out your own battery being exposed, it was still fully protected in the bot (just some extra ventilation, but the top and bottom were still extending over it) and with the other bot weapon being disabled there was very little chance of the battery getting hit. The battery rule is there primarily so the organizers don't have to deal (as much) with lipo fires and is only really applicable when the battery is fully exposed outside the bot so it could get damaged in a collision between the bots, or exposed enough that a weapon could easily hit it, neither was the case here. I think if the opponent had a big pointy spike on the front it would've been different.

Positive influence when your opponents deliberately have to kit to go against you
@heirofaniu Жыл бұрын
Against an undercutter something that might work is to simply take your basic sweet tooth design and put a bit of a chamfered cup/puck on the front, forcing the opponent's blade downwards underneath your front frame assembly and then raising your weapon right up into the front face of their robot. If you can smack them in the face before they can smack you in the tire you can (theoretically) come out better in that engagement since they physically cannot hit you from the front.

So, I've been binge watching robot battling videos, and my brain came up with a concept. Let's say, I dunno, a fae or something of that size created a robot for tournaments that has a cockpit on top, so they can directly operate it. Let's assume there's magic so that the cockpit itself is practically indestructible, the pilot is safe. Would that still be allowed, if it was confirmed the pilot would be fine? And if so, what kind of advantages and disadvantages might it bring? For visualisation, I'm imagining like, a little glass dome on top of the robot. Assume it's designed after Cheesecake if the type of robot is too big of a factor to say otherwise.

in defense of your battery, if I were the ref, and believed both weapons were no longer functional as you had shut yours off, I would not have called that a 'battery out' KO. It was still inside the bot behind the weapon and there was no immediate danger of it being hit or coming out more with neither weapon spinning. if you had kept spinning the weapon and I had seen where the battery was I'd have called it. I don't know if the ref there was following this logic, but shutting the weapon off before the ref saw the battery may have won you the match.

What if you try to use the wall to launch Cheesecake into your enemies
@alexsalchemy Жыл бұрын
Well, one of the things that makes vertical spinners so dangerous is that they get to push off the floor. I've thought about doing the same thing but horizontally, pushing off the walls. Unfortunately, this would require me to stay by the walls, and I would lose the match for failing to engage with my opponent. The walls only exist on the edges of the arena, but the floor exists everywhere, so vertical spinners get that advantage of being able to push off of something no matter where they are.

I dont know a lot about battle bots, what is the means of attack of wedges and why are they scary?
@alexsalchemy Жыл бұрын
Well, wedges can't inflict damage directly, but they can use your own weapon's energy against you by surviving your attacks and waiting for you to break yourself. They can also dominate in their aggression and control, which are the other two categories the judges score on apart from damage, if the match goes to full time and becomes a judge's decision. Wedges are especially scary for horizontal spinners because the wedge deflects the horizontal spinner up and away and the wedge takes very little if any damage in the process.
@VerySpecificlyUnspecific Жыл бұрын
how do wedge bots win competitions? I don't know a lot about the hobby/sport and have been quite curious for some time now.
@alexsalchemy Жыл бұрын
A wedge bot is unlikely to knock out their opponent, so they usually win by judge's decision. Most events are judged in three categories like the TV show: damage to your opponent, aggression initiating the engagements, and control over your robot. As long as a wedge bot doesn't take too much damage, they can usually win on aggression and control by pushing their opponent around the arena, and possibly by breaking their opponent's weapon.
