What a great interview with Dr Hashmi. I have had kidney issues and kidney stones . . . I found the information here very helpful. What a kind hearted soul. I am tuning in regularly for your interviews Chef AJ. You are doing a wonderful job to educate the population. I am interested in how a plant based diet helps alzheimers.

I found it amazing to learn that kidney disease kills more people than breast and prostate cancer. We hear so much about those diseases and so little about our kidneys. Someone I know on dialysis said she's told to eat more meat! I just shared this interview and on my HAPPY VEGAN COUPLE Facebook page. Thanks so much for the education!!!

patients on dialysis are told to have more protein as by dialysis lots of protein and nutrients are removed from body. as ckd has 4 to 5 stages, each stage has different kinds of diet, so one one dialysis and one on stage 1 have different food to eat.

I was a dialysis nurse for 4 yrs, and I can say, we have to retrain nephrology dieticians, because they just push animal proteins and cheese with very little beans, legumes or potatoes. Quinoa was deemed a pretty safe higher protein food for dialysis patients too. This Dr was awesome, would like to hear more from him!

SELF Principle I agree wholeheartedly with Jessica! Thank you so much for sharing this information, Dr. Hashmi! I watched the live stream of AJ interviewing you, and unfortunately didn’t get to ask you the question that I tried to submit in the chat(?) You had talked about improving kidney function via a plant-based diet, in order to AVOID dialysis. I was wondering if this is also possible for someone ALREADY DOING peritoneal dialysis at home? My 50-year-old sister (who unlike me, has NEVER tried going plant-based) had HBP 2 years ago which she tried to manage by omitting salt. She got pneumonia and when she was hospitalized, they discovered her kidney function was at 13%. She opted for dialysis to get her out of that initial health crisis, and now that she’s better, we are all wondering what her options are? One of the success stories over at Forks Over Knives is about someone on (hemo?)dialysis with 3% kidney function who was essentially able to improve his kidney function via plant-based diet to a point where he was able to get off of dialysis. While this story at Forks Over Knives is very inspirational, I am having a difficult time finding any other, more comprehensive information about people improving their function while already on dialysis. Are there any resources that you can recommend?

This sounds great but Kaiser is notorious for not giving this information to their own patients. I know a family whose mom was in this clinic with a hematologist on staff and they missed leukemia and adrenal tumors for over 10 years. I am sure they wished he was teaching like this when she nearly lost her life in that same department. I just say wow and shared this with her sons who suffer greatly with their mom.

@CHEF AJ You can go to medical school somewhere! But we are so happy to have you in this capacity now sharing your fantastic guests and information. Great guest sharing with us the benefits of good solid food. Also, thankful to the food banks and hope they will have more whole food. I used to donate and volunteer with homeless or unemployed or under employed , and now I have come to be in the position of being under employed myself. I hope their will be less processed food and more simple healthful food: beans, lentils, rice , potatoes. People do need to have SOME money to be okay. Basic shelter with tiny private space is a must for safety and health. On a side note, if one is in good health and has the resources, there is often a way to follow one’s dreams, and people in good health are likely to live much longer. So, if CHEF AJ truly wanted to go to med school, it should be possible. However, these programs seems such an amazing contribution to people, and some will go on to take paid courses, so it should be income making too. If I were to do something medical, I think it would be a naturopathic nurse if those existed, maybe an OD assistant, but I think those do not exist yet, only PAs exist. I hope OD assistants will become a reality. I’m sure people watching this program may be interested in more wholistic health based programs and careers. People can keep working and learning and volunteering regardless of age. My family members were examples. Those who were active worked until a year or two before their passing naturally or passing by accidents (lots of climbing accidents) into their 90s and 100s, my grand mom young 80s due to sports accident. Anyway, people now who are healthy are living even longer. People who are not healthy seem to be dieing younger which is scary. But those who are more healthy may be here until 120s or 130s. We don’t know, but these seem to be in the genetic possibility if people are not sinning, intentionally or not, by poisoning and damaging their body. But everyone can find a way to pursue some interest. Health gives a foundation for us to pursue those interests. Thank you for keeping the community health @CHEF AJ with these wonderful guests and programs. Thank you!

I am eating whole foods plant based, with occasional fish, chicken (very small lean portions), very little oil, eating whole fruits and juicing (drinking mostly carrots, apples, celery and only 300 - 500 ml each serving, and this is prob a main meal in itself), carrot juicing because there is only so many carrots I can chew in a day, and because most of our soils are so deficient the few carrots i eat (I'm a small eater) in a day will cause me to be deficient in many vitamins/minerals because my fiber intake (from eating fruits and some nuts, very little, maybe just a small handful) is pretty high, in any single day, i poop at least 2 times/day! I don't take any table sugar, or ultra processed carbs, even bread, except sourdough. I also take b12, even with the little clean meats I take, from time to time. My latest blood test, everything was good! Creatinine was in range, but eGfr was 86 ( Had diarrhoea 2 days before blood test from food poisioning, so, does this affect why my eGfr went from normal to 86?)
