I still use my standesign made in Portsmouth from mid 90’s. They’ve followed me around for 30 years and enjoyed about 5 different pairs of speakers

There were plenty of floor standers pre late 80’s from the likes of Tannoy, wharfedale (E90’s and W series etc), JBL, Lowther, some Mission speakers, Castle. Stands don’t have a sound just as cables don’t have a sound but they work as part of an acousto-mechanical system. Stands have a simple job. To raise, isolate or couple a speaker. How they are designed will influence sound clarity to a greater or lesser degree but the main point is to get tweeters to ear height.

i made mine from hollow table legs,i filled them with sand and they are fine to my ears . think it came to 40 quid

He’s not joking about using a minimal amount of blu tack either. I overdid it a bit and, the next time I needed to remove the speakers from their stands, the blu tack took chunks of the veneer off the bottom of the speakers with it.

I have atacama nexus 6 speaker stands and they are great ,in the 80s you also had the B&W dm220s

I make dumped steel speaker stands, bespoke for the footprint and the height tweeters. They sound fantastic, but I cannot make them for less than £300. It is very important that they are tailored for your speakers! Is not worth spending £600 for Solid steel stands and then the top plate covers just half or 2/3 of the base of the cabinet. I put drum's anti vibration gel pads(amazing) at the four corners and voilá.

My first speakers were a pair of DIY Wharefedale Denton speakers back in the early 80s. My dad then helped me make a pair of stands to match - a brick column with wooden tops and bottoms and nails for spikes- not sure how well they worked.

Try out Norstone Stylum speaker stands. If you block the whole(s) at the bottom of the stands you can fill it with sand or your preference. Also, Kanto has good stands but Norstone can look better but I like the bottom spikes of Kanto SX better... It's - Norstone Stylum - full metal, but has covers. Of course, not as a furniture kind as a hardwood but could be still pretty. I have a fake oak.... Also, you can always go to a local diy or find somebody who specialises in wooden material and buy acacia wood or oak and get them cut the required length - you want professional tools for the job because everything should be at the same level. And yes, they can really change the sound....

I guess all moniters are sensitive to what they are mounted on. Spendors - for instance, really do benefit from an open frame type stand- like, seriously improved base and midrange clarity just from this one consideration! The B&Ws I've owned always seemed to open up on a heavy stand.

I use a pair Dali E600s. They cost me £145. And I use them with Monitor Audio Silver 100s (6th Gen) which retailed at £650. They seem to do the job but, like with all things HiFi, I can't help but wonder if I'd notice any difference in sound quality with more expensive stands. 👀😅

Maybe the trend towards non-satisfying HiFi systems wasn’t so much to do with the introduction of digital sources, but the trend with speakers to be a) small and narrow, and b) hyper-detailed at the expense of warmth

Still seem over priced , having recently made my own stands from bits I had to hand . I use 4inch plastic soil pipe which I attached to two MDF peace’s top and bottom , the top peace was made to fit the size of my concept 20s . I filled the stands with cat litter before assembly , and sprayed them in a stone grey colour to match the rest of our furniture . Totally cost £ 12 for the spray , and £8 for a large bag of cat litter . If all items were bought from a store , I would estimate below £50 pounds . I Did spend £10 a meter on new speaker cable from Van den hul , but the difference the stand and cable have made is quite remarkable . So I recommend anyone having a go , and trust me its not that difficult . Plus you can make them to the exact height you require , which is not the case with most ready made products .

Some might say floor standing speakers are to large for certain rooms but when you see a stand mounted speakers the overall dimensions they can look much larger. I guess its about the room size too as certain speakers need a certain amount of space to perform best. Must say these stands are so elegant and stylish 👍

its not about overall dimensions, floor standers get boomy unless in large rooms...for the UK 95% of homes are better off with stand mounts

Epos ES11 / 14s had superb and elegant open stands....... one pillar stands look strange to me, and dont have integrity of 4 pillar ones.....you can rock a single pillar stand pretty easily

It always seemed daft to me to have speaker stands because that space could be occupied by a bigger speaker, which is usually better.

Depending on design of the cabinet. A well designed and built highly absorbent TL can work most anywhere imo.

If stands were made adjustable, they would lose the rigidity they need to work properly.
