One of the many films made by Jam Handy for Chevrolet and General Motors, "It's Your Money" shows a customer examining a Chevy panel truck. The 3100 Truck, part of the Advance Design Series, was one of the most popular delivery trucks in its era because of its efficient engine, with a valve and head design, steering-column shifter, and large useable load space. It was sold in a variety of models including pick-ups, panel vans, and double duty models.
Chevrolet's first major redesign post-World War II, the Advance-Design series was billed as a bigger, stronger, and sleeker design in comparison to the earlier AK Series. First available on Saturday June 28, 1947, these trucks were sold with various minor changes over the years until March 25, 1955, when the Task Force Series trucks replaced the aging Advance-Design model.
The same basic design family was used for all of its trucks including the Suburban, panel trucks, canopy express and cab overs. The cab overs used the same basic cab configuration and similar grille but used a shorter and taller hood and different fenders. The unique Cab Over fenders and hood required a custom cowl area which makes the Cab Over Engine cabs and normal truck cabs incompatible with one another while all truck cabs of all weights interchange.
From 1947 until 1955, Chevrolet trucks were number one in sales in the United States, with rebranded versions sold at GMC locations.
While General Motors used this front end sheet metal, and to a slightly lesser extent the cab, on all of its trucks except for the Cab Overs, there are three main sizes of this truck: the half-, three-quarter-, and full ton capacities in short and long wheelbase.

I've always liked trucks of this vintage. I miss the days of manual shifting. People today have become so spoiled by clutchless, shiftless driving.

My Dad bought a new 1950 1 ton (3600) panel truck for $1700.00. Had 17 inch tires, 216 ci, 4 speed. It ran for over 22 years. Don't know what finally happen to it.

My father had a brand new 1959 Apache 10 panel truck that was supplied by his employer Harder Mechanical of Portland Oregon. He was a union trained master plumber who was the only one to drive that truck for the next 15 years! That panel truck worked hard hauling galvanized pipe & cast iron drain lines as well as the pipe threading machine & needed tools to custom make all plumbing systems. No plastic in the 50`s & 60`s all heavy metal piping with lead & oakum for drain lines. No passenger seat either! Had to sit on his tool box if I went with him somewhere.Had small section of wood area right in front of the rear double doors that occasionally my father had to replace. Old truck could still do 75 mph in 1973 with the 3 -speed on the tree & the 6 cylinder engine even with 96,000 miles on the clock. It did have a couple of carburetor fires sitting in our driveway in front of the garage. Had a starter push button in the floor as well when the horn switch quit working Harder`s mechanic on Woodstock, replaced the original horn button with a button switch on the steering column right side. Miss seeing my dad in his overalls working with his tools. Almost all of which I still have & they all still work! Sadly at 4'10" tall & only 130# I was not able to follow my father or grandfather in the trade.

We have a 1954 Chevrolet grain truck on the farm. My grandfather bought it new and I still use it in a limited capacity. It still runs great. Proper maintenance is the key.

Yup they are all that and more! I still drive my 1950 Chevy 3/4 ton pickup truck and it drives like new! They really were made to last, not like the junk built today.

My late Dad was a. house painter in Lancaster, Calif. He had an Army green 1951 Chevy panel. 3 on the tree and a 6 cylinder engine. Nobody back then had a clue we were driving around in 30/40k classics!

I guess that old panel truck of your dad's made a lot of trips to the San Fernando Valley for paint and supplies on old highway 14. I remember Palmdale and Lancaster in the 50s as well.... Tujunga was home and we went through Big Tujunga Canyon to Palmdale. Good memories!

@@Code3forever Thanks for your kind reply, appreciate it. I remember driving Angeles Forest Highway, talk about car sickness!! We had so many cars and trucks back in the day, what a museum. We had a pretty 1957 Studebaker pickup. Whimpy 6 banger and took about 5 or 6 turns of the wheel to turn it around. Dad traded it for a '59 GMC long bed pickup, 4 on the floor with a granny gear first gear, learned to drive that bad boy. The best truck dad owned was a new '67 Chevy C-10 p-u. It had a 327 c.i. V8, 2 speed auto, no power anything, no radio, but, it was a 2 seater, buckets with a center storage box, rare back then.

@@gordonvincent731 I remember when the '67 came out and it did look rather sporty for a pickup compared to the '66. We had a neighbor in Tujunga who had a '67 Step Side C20 with the 292 6 cylinder with 4 speed and he pulled a 18 foot Terry travel trailer with it all over the country. They were good trucks. My first new car was a 1968 Camaro SS 396 but my first was a 61 Bel Air with powerglide and a 283. It didn't set the street on fire but it was a great first car. Paid 500 dollars for it in 1966 from our neighbors. Not exactly a teenager's dream car but it was dependable. Studebaker made some good cars. Our other neighbor had a Gran Tourismo Hawk and that was a fast car. It would be nice to have cars and trucks like those good old days. Simple to work on and not so expensive. The 68 camaro was 3392 dollars out the door at Allen Gwynne Chevrolet in Glendale.

@@Code3forever Thanks again for your reply. I'm having memories about So. Cal. back in the day. In this sterile, computer world, it's all the same, no variety, it's just not my world anymore. That Avanti could have saved Studebaker, but, even though I'm a retired union man, I have to state it, their unions shot themselves in the foot, caused many delays and other issues. I'm glad I lived when and where I did.

@@gordonvincent731 we were born and raised during a great period. Our cars, music and growing up in the 50s and 60s were the best if times. We saw change like no others in my opinion. Lancaster is certainly not the same as back when your dad painted, just as Sunland Tujunga has changed since my time growing up there. We both have fond memories of our time and place in the area.... Nice exchanging memories with you...
