This video will show that you can switch a Chevrolet S10 2.2 engine with a Cavalier 2.2. This specific example is for the years of 1998 - 2001. I did a lot of research an there wasn't too many website saying that you can do a swap of these 2 motors, so hopefully this helps you. This will describe everything you will need to switch over to make this work.

Good informational video! I have a 2000 Isuzu hombre with the 2.2 engine. i hydrolocked the motor and bent a connecting rod . I have a 1999 Chevy cavalier 2.2 engine I’m installing it my truck. 95 cavalier/sunfire engine will fit 94-95 s10. 96-97 cavalier/sunfire engine will fit 96-97 s10. 98 and up cavalier/sunfire engine will fit 98 and up s10. Always install new timing chain kit!! Im talking about 2.2 engine.

people claim certain engines can't be done because they take a quick look at it and if it looks different then its a no go for them. Meanwhile people like you and Chad here are a bit more intelligent and see that the engines are exactly the same aside from a few covers and brackets so it should work without a ton of effort. I had someone tell me the most popular swap for any S10 will not work. Mine is a first gen with a 4.3L now and the guy literally said a 350 would not fit and would not work and the tranny would not bolt up. After i was finished laughing in his face I asked him to explain to me why a 350 would not fit when it has 3 quarters of a 350 in it right now? At that point I decided to only listen to knowledgeable people. Plus as far as any machine goes. If it has an engine in it then nearly anything can be swapped in it. It just depends on how much time you want to invest in modding the vehicle. Shit right now I am entertaining the idea of swapping in a 3800 Series II S/C because I have a L36 block with L67 heads and charger (also have a tranny but can't use it case it is a transverse so I have to stick with the 4L60 in the truck). Honestly the amount of engine possibilities open up a lot when you have a welder and know how to weld.

+Lilwill Newell yeah, they usually have a little chatter from the timing chain. If you haven't changed yours out and have a good amount of miles, it may be a good idea to do that.

I did the same swap but the cavalier sensor reads full pressure all the time and the s10 sensor reads 20 pounds after warm up at idle.oils clean and motor isnt consuming fluids or making any terrible noises.sounds good..

I would maybe do a manual oil pressure test. You can do a loan a tool at a local auto parts store, they usually have them. 20 pounds of pressure is what I had before I changed the motors, it was too low for me. The new motor from the Cavalier had a lot better pressure.

No, a Chevy Cavalier is a FWD, and an S10 is a RWD truck, so the transmissions won’t work.

I know I have to change the exhaust manifold for the secondary air injection, but not sure about any sencors or anything else I need to worry about. THANKS ALOT FOR ANY INFO.

Hey Kyle! I am not 100% sure about the 1998, but the 1999 -2001 2.2 engines will work. You may have to do a little more research on what is different between the 1998 engine and 99-01 engines. I hope this helps a little.

The 2.0 engine and 2.2 has the same trans bell housing , as does the 2.5 Pontiac iron Duke , as does the 2.8 V-6 ,and the 3.4 V-6 All 4 of these engines will fit the transmission, you will have to change the motor mounts with the V-6 engines , As for me , I'm installing a 350 V-8 and installing a Turbo 350 trans

The oil pressure was great! It sat right at 40 or more the whole time. I ended up just using the oil pressure sensor that was on the S10 motor. It turned out to work perfectly.

I feel like that would be counter intuitive. the weight of the 4.3 compared to the 2.2 is much heavier. So although the 2.2 has 50 less hp it would still come out on top because of the weight and fuel consumption and honestly it would be the same.

The 2.2 OHV engine like this one was rated at 115HP. The cavalier was also sold with a 2.2 DOHC engine rated at 140.

I just did this swap and I have everything bolted up besides the driveshaft and exhaust. And I have this misfire/backfire when it's running. New plugs, wires, ignition module, coil packs, and crankshaft sensor any ideas will be much appreciated

Hey Joey! So, first thing I would check is if you have the wires ran correct from the coil pack to the spark plugs. If, they are all correct, then I would check compression for each of the cylinders. Let me know if that help!

Did you do timing while you had the new engine out? Maybe it is a tooth off? Maybe there is slack in the chain or tensioner that is causing it to be off at certain intervals?

Sounds good! The timing chain can do crazy things in these trucks. Mine had slack in it, causing a lose of oil pressure. It was so hard to diagnose.... Good luck Joey!

I had to do zero modifications to the motor mounts. The Cavalier engine block already had the holes tapped and just swapped them directly.

They swapped over perfectly. They have the bolt holes in the block and treaded. You will have no issues there.

+Carl Nutter The only things I can think of is the 2 motor mounts and validating all the bell housing bolts are tight. You put the 2 long bolts in the motor mount to rubber bushings, right? I assume these are things you already checked, but just thinking out loud.

flywheel and clutch and flywheel bolts from s10 just remove the flexplate and bolt ur clutch and flywheel on and you will need to swap the pilot bearing in the crank as well

Nope, still rear wheel drive. The S10 and Cavalier share the same motor. It is the transmission, intake, exhaust, mounting brackets, and a few other things that are different.
