I had it for 8 months. It was a desaster! Low power mode, check engine light always on, stalling at red lights This thing was working hard every time I pushed the gas or hauled stuff in the bed. The last straw was when they could't find the problem even though the recalls on the engine were all made. They had to take the whole engine out and figure out whats going on. Traded it for the 5.3 V8. couldn't be happier.

I was an aircraft mechanic for 32 years. I studied physics. Years ago I also worked on cars. Each cylinder in an internal combustion engine has to produce a certain amount force, or "brake specific cylinder pressure", which equates to downward force through the connecting rods, from the pistons, on to the crankshaft, to produce a given amount of torque and horsepower. If you have two engines of nearly equal horsepower and torque, one is a four cylinder and the other an eight cylinder, which one is going to endure the most stress on its internal components ? The four or the eight. The four is. BTW, the 5.3 towing the same amount of weight will get over ten miles per gallon, compared to less than 12 for the four cylinder. The four cylinder is cheaper to build. Has the truck gotten cheaper, now that they're sticking a little four banger in it ? NO ! That four cylinder is not going to last as long as the eight cylinder. The piston rings will wear out sooner in the four. Which means more blow by gases into the crankcase, and more power loss as the engine ages. It's just simple physics. Leave it to American vehicle manufacturer to figure out how to make more money, at the consumer's expense. Some of this is because of the federal government mandating better gas mileage. Having that four cylinder engine is not going to make a significant difference in gas mileage. It produces a similar amount of power, as the eight cylinder, and is pushing a vehicle, that's within one or two hundred pounds of being the same weight as the eight cylinder truck. The four cylinder may actually get slightly worse mileage than the v8 truck. Years ago when I worked on cars, and this has been back in the late 1970's, G.M. produced the Chevy Impala, available with a standard for its day 350 cu/in. v8 engine. This was in the mid 70's. That engine produced 145 horsepower. They also had available as an option, a 400 cu/in engine, that produced about 10 more horsepower, but produced quite a bit more torque. I worked on numerous mid 70's impalas and so communicated with the customers. Plus my parents had three impalas, throughout that decade. A 1972, a 1974, and a 1976. All were equipped with 350 v8's, and none of them ever got better than 13mpg. By contrast the ones I saw,and worked on that belonged to customers, that had the "small block" 400 cu/in engine, usually got around and slightly above 16 mpg. My speculation is that when you have a certain amount of weight to push along, and an under powered, and under torque rated engine, that engine may have to work harder to the point that its operating at a higher fuel to air ratio. Similar to towing. The only reason they're going to these engines, is to maximize profit. I wouldn't buy any full size truck without a proper v8 engine. You'll also find if you do the research, that the G.M. pickups, with the v8's that have "active fuel management technology" (a fancy way of saying cylinder canceling), wherein under certain operating conditions the EMC cancels operation of four of the eight cylinders, so that the v8 operates on four cylinders, that they don't get significantly better mileage. These engines are having problems with the failure of valve lifters and camshaft damage due to it. There's technology available to disable the cylinder canceling system. Also some shops are, for a price, converting these troublesome cylinder canceling v8's over to being a standard v8. Because there's been so many failures, customers are paying to have them changed. My suggestion is this............... don't buy a four cylinder powered full size truck. Especially if it's something with a turbocharger. It's just more shit to add complication, and potential problems. You get what you demand, by refusing to buy them into stratospheric profit land. Forty, fifty, sixty thousand dollar trucks. Don't buy em. Then watch how soon the prices come down, and Wall Street quits demanding billions, and settles for millions.

If your going this route, try the 2.7 F150. It has been time tested and is way ahead of the 4 banger GM. The GMC design team decided to copy Ford’s exterior design as close as they could for some reason, so why not go with the original. Before you go With either GM, at least test drive the F150. I’m glad I finally made the switch to Ford. It’s faster, I get 22.6 combined MPG, it’s more powerful, and if you feel bad about switching, just switch the Ford Emblem for the red letters and no one will know the difference. Truthfully, I am glad I switched to Ford from Chevy. The rock chips don’t rust anymore. Contrary to popular belief, there’s no holes from dropping tool boxes in the bed of my truck either. Somehow, that aluminum bed works just fine, and once again, it doesn’t have any rust in it either.

Great drivetrain setup when it's reliable and new. This will not be one of those trucks that you get 200,000 miles out of with the normal wear and tear part replacement, where it is relatively cheap to maintain. This will be triple or quadruple the maintenance cost in the long run. Turbocharged, much more piping and gaskets to blow out, the turbo itself most likely way over priced. The 8 speed transmission is wonderful while it works properly, but it will be one of the most expensive transmission to get rebuilt. The 2.7 liter engine will be worked much harder than your standard V8 which means it will not be a long lasting engine like those old LS 6.0's that last 250,000 - 300,000 miles. A few miles per gallon saved in fuel cost is certainly not worth it longevity wise because the V8 doesn't have as much strain on it's parts to produce the same horsepower. I do think it's really cool turbo 4 banger with a 8 speed. But 310 HP thru 4 pistons is much different than 310 HP thru 8 pistons

Amazing after reading all this 3+ yr old news, that GM is still offering this engine. As the exclusive engine in Colorado & Canyon, as well as Cadillac, & still in Silverado & Sierra. Ford began their 2.7 turbo nearly a decade ago, & the 3.5 turbo smokes the 5.0. Ram replaced the hemi V8's w/ a 3.0 I6 hurricane that outperforms. GM doing the same. 2.7 I4 turbo makes 430 low rpm grunty ft lbs of torque compared to 383 ft lbs of torque from antiquated lifter failing V8. Same payload & towing from 2.7 compared to 5.3 for $6k less, (provides 40,000 miles of fuel). Perhaps in 3 more yrs, the wishes for 2.7 turbo to fail will subside, especially after V8's are discontinued.

Probably your Uncle Sam is planning to raise the tax prices for the cubic capacity of the engine, so now all the manufacturers are making small 4-cylinder engines to prepare. We have had such a situation in Europe for a long time, so in 99% of cases our trucks have 4-cylinder diesel engines with a cubic capacity of less than 2.5 liters. Of course, we never had V8 engines here because our petrol is 15 times more expensive than in North America, but that's another story.
