This video has a little "extended" tuning demonstration. The saw starts out way too rich and then a bit lean, then perfect. I try to detail the steps of fine tuning.

Leon, I can't tell you how many videos I've watched and how many manuals I've studied on 2-stroke carburetors and tuning chainsaws. Probably in the many dozens, if not hundreds, by now. I have two of these saws and this was the very first video which shows how to fine tune the Low and Idle speeds in synch, one after the other, and explains very clearly what to hear in terms of loading up/running slower and leaning out/running faster, so I actually, FINALLY, understand tuning! Anyone else reading this after 23/01/07, the important points I described above are between 3:50 and 5:50. I can tell which screws Leon is adjusting because I have that saw - the screws are oriented, left to right, High speed, Low speed, Idle, and from what I can see he is only adjusting the Low speed and Idle. Thank you SO much for explaining and showing this and the fine tuning it requires to get spot on the target!

I have one of these and just love it. Mine is kind of bratty until it warms up after about ten minutes, and then it runs great. The low speed jet is very touchy on mine. But I am happy with it.

Leon, Nice video! Are the case screws prone to stripping on these XLs? What repair do you suggest? I noticed the recoil was not retracting well like mine too.

So a dumb question. I have a 70’s vintage super 2. It has one large screw and one small covered by the choke lever when choke is open. Which is which?

Thank You Leon! Been working on neighbor's xl automatic, ut 104444 single adj screw. it'll take minute adjustments from 3/4 out. With your help I got it to oil the bar properly but it'll dump a lot of oil for half a day after running a bit. (and loosening cap) Question: The crankshaft has a lot of play side to side. it "thunks" a bit turning the saw side to side. will bearings fix that?

It could be a bearing issue or just the spacing. It's a big download, but look up the Super 2 section in the service manual: www.leonschainsawpartsandrepair.com/uploads/3/9/7/9/39792537/homelite_chainsaw_service_shop_manual_5th_edition__pages_1-96_.pdf You may need to split the engine housing and properly space the bearings from the thrust washers. Some side to side is normal...in general, as long as the flywheel isn't hitting the starter housing you are okay. Each shim spacer is .015" for a total of .030" of play.

@@LeonsChainsawPartsAndRepair Wow! Thanks! No, it's not hitting the starter housing so I'll tell him about it and try running 32:1 (w/ stihl orange) maybe make it last a bit with occasional use. I will read the manual! Maybe when I grow up (65yrs now) I'll split a housing or 2. . . heh

Hey Leon. I noticed on my Homelite XL that the lo speed jet adjustment screw on the outside is gone. Is that something you stock for replacement? or do you have any ideas if I can use something as an alternative?

Good morning. I have an old XL like the one in this video that has been wonderful for many years. Last season it started loosing power under load, seems to be loading up but idles fine. I have checked all the usual suspects and replaced hoses with no luck. I would like to rebuild the carb. Do you sell kits or can you point me in the right direction? UT 105074 Thanks, Gene

I did a shout to your channel I hope you can answer this.. On 2 saws (Super2's) I tried to run them in the vise without the case. No go. I assemble them both to the point of no bar and they run, Can you tell me why? I am just doing this now on my latest video. You don't have to watch (this video at spot 22:19 kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXLKZoetbc13e6s&feature=em-comm . Pressure tested the cranks seals, new hoses, new duckbills and rebuilt carbs down to the circuit seal in the carb. I know you are busy. Bruce
