These videos are priceless but man, the backdrop! Neat fences on either side of the driveway, tidy little cabins(?), pastures on either side, animals grazing contentedly in the distance - Oh, the life!

Hi Ivan, as always, love the video! My 2008 Pontiac G8 just suffered a similar issue with the CPS. To answer why the sensor's output performs the way it does - the hall effect sensor has what's called a "totem pole" output stage. What this means is, on its output, there are two MOSFETs (but we can think of them like switches), one on top of the other. The top MOSFET is connected to +12v, and the bottom MOSFET is connected to ground. In the presence of the magnetic field, the top MOSFET (or "high side switch") switches on, providing 12v to the output of the sensor. When the magnetic field dissipates, the top MOSFET switches off, and the bottom MOSFET (or "low side switch") switches on, pulling the sensor's output to ground. What probably happens when these sensors start to fail is one of two things. Either A) The high side MOSFET does not turn all the way off and continues sourcing or "leaking" current (more likely), even though the bottom MOSFET is on, or B) The low side MOSFET does not turn all the way on and cannot pull current far enough to ground (less likely). Would love to visit you in PA sometime and shoot the breeze, I'm an electronics engineer with an interest in automobiles, so I'd be happy to teach you things, much like you've taught me thanks to youtube.

I had a 2002 Chevy Tahoe with a 5.3 that I towed a 7000lb trailer with. When towing I would get a flashing cel every few miles with no perceptible misfire or any other symptoms. It showed misfire codes with misfires on both banks. The shop I took it to threw parts at it with no success. What fixed it, with help from the etcg forum, was a crankshaft position sensor relearn. This worked like a charm and it never set another cel the rest of the time I owned it. We kept the original sensor. I am sure they didn't even check it.

+Jeff Blackwell Yup have seen this before. Maybe the timing chain stretches ever so slightly and causes the false misfires...nice job!

thanks! i recently put in a NEW (but bad) CKP sensor and its apparently shorted internally- screwing up my fuel level gauge, ignition coil/ignitor(?) and setting off a host of other selonoids- et al! I cleaned all grounds, rebuilt my fuse box, new ECU, cleaned everything........no changes UNTIL i just now decided to swap back in the old CKP sensor. All the electrical clicking, etc went away immediately and Im not going thru the KEY RELEARN process for the new ECU

Please define a short in a ground cable. Was it just a poor connection or a bad corroded wire? A ground cable can't really short to ground ;)

Hey Ivan, is that the new Autel scan tool that just came out recently? One of the guys from the parts store said he was going to drop one off to see how we liked it. I was just curious if that's the one he's talking about and if you have an opinion on it? Good, bad, whatever?

I have that same "Owan" 120 volt/ battery powered scope. Could you please do a video on general automotive electrical testing with that scope . I dont have the money for any real snap-on scope and would really appreciate, I'am still learning but afraid to damage this scope using it wrong. Please help.

+gary smith Hi Gary, absolutely! I am planning a series of videos on using an oscilloscope, including all the accessories that can be useful in automotive diagnostics. We can definitely do a Verus vs. Owon vs. Pico comparison :) I have also made my own pressure transducer from scratch, so that will be interesting to experiment with...

PDS5022T and SDS6032V 2-channel scopes with optional battery packs. SDS is a great tool, but surprisingly lacks the ability to save waveforms in full detail. These are collecting dust since the Verus took over :)

For the love of fuck, save yourself the trouble I went through and take off the o-ring on the old crankshaft sensor and put it on the new sensor. I spent forever trying to smash the new sensor in the hole before I realized the o-ring on it was fucking huge.

Gotta get into editing man. Title the intro with the vehicle you are working on with a text overlay. Cut out a lot of the gibberish and give the viewer the most important points. Did a better job of cutting down the screen glare too. Lots of things you could improve on. Invest in a tripod and gorilla pod. Shaky cam gets a little nauseating to watch after a while. The more you can improve your video quality and editing the more subscribers you'll get I guarantee it.

+DJDevon3 Thanks for the suggestions, DJ! What video editing software do you use? Obviously the KZbin editor is kinda primitive. I agree this wasn't the smoothest video...was kind of tired after a 100-mile MTB race over the weekend lol. Also the poor scope connection at the PCM had me chasing a ghost. Part 2 should be short and sweet :)

+motoYam82 I'm not sure if you know about youtube editor has a 'stabilize' feature. It can also be found in the 'enhancement' tab under edit. It will remove a lot of the shakeness. It works well and I use it anytime I film just holding the camera in my hand. Ytube editor might not be the best software but it works well and is FREE! Take it easy- Ozz

+Ozzstar The stabilize feature in KZbin is terrible. Never turn that thing on. It distorts the video and puts black shaky bars all around the edges.
@ozzstars_cars
@ozzstars_cars 9 жыл бұрын
I disagree, it works fine for low budget videos that have some shake. Also the stabilizing feature can be adjusted for the amount of stabilization. Use scale 1-3 and its fine. No need to spend lot$ of money for software. I know I make videos. Its the content that is important! Anti please post some of the videos you use with the stabilization features so you can sell me on the idea of spending lot$ of money. I'll post my honest unbiased judgement.
