AldanFerrox The owner of the Harrah's Casino had a full sized Jeep Cherokee four wheel drive built with a Ferrari V12 in it, so he could buzz over the hill from Reno Nevada to South Lake Tahoe where his home was in the winter in style. It's still at the Harrah's car museum built in his honor in Reno Nevada that houses some of the thousands of rare vehicles he owned while he was still alive.

Did nobody pay attention to the video? the car had no drivetrain, if he hadn't put that engine in it wouldn't be on the road. The fact it is is the important thing and it's not a bad engine for it plus the valve covers and the tripower make it look slightly better than a single four barrel would.

I consider myself a HUGE Ferrari purist, BUT, this was the right thing to do. Instead of seeing this car go to the scrap heap he decided that putting the V8 in this car was the right thing to do, I don't fault him at all for that. If you were all truly Ferrari fans you would want to see this car go on and live regardless of the fact that it doesn't have its original V12. We all know how hard those Colombo V12s are to find, this guy made do with what he had and that is certainly nothing to scoff at. I commend this guy for his passion for Ferrari's, the story behind the car is incredible and gives it more character than most of the Ferrari's I've seen.

I'd consider myself a "purist" but a car guy first; after hearing this story, I think this Resto mod is awesome because it keeps one more Ferrari on the road especially since the car was originally gutted for parts. It'll be cool if eventually it is swapped out for a real Ferrari v12 or v8 from a later model like a 412 Ferrari or 308. That hauler is awesome as well. There's another video on KZbin of a BMW E24 M635CSi getting resto modded when the owner has the original engine etc, I thought that was pretty silly to do.

Did anyone listen? This guy did it right. Original engine was gone, v8 mods already done when he got it. He said if he could find the numbers matching engine, he would put it in, but if not he wasn't going to put in a different Ferrari engine. I think this is awesome. The car hauler too.

Why are people getting so butthurt over this V8 conversion? This car is still a beautiful work of art. When you look at classic Ferrari you do not picture the engine under the hood no matter what it is, you think about the beautiful curves and edges Pininfarina or whoever sculpted and you think about the beautifully crafted interior. No true car enthusiast should care about what is under the hood as long as it is not some shotty engine (not to mention Ferraris of this era had a habit of not running) with no heritage, give the man a break he owns a beautiful classic Ferrari with an engine that will actually run for more than 10 minutes.

as someone who absolutely loves Ferrari's I'm not even mad, these engines are super expensive and rare. The original engine is probably used to keep an even more desirable Ferrari got a v12 that is supposed to be in it. This also means that there are a lot more exteriors of rare cars than engines so if people put us v8s in old Ferrari's id still prefer that over a "normal" muscle car.

A V12 would've been a LOT more expensive to buy and maintain over the years, so why not just put something reliable and practical in it? I'd rather see a GTE on the road with a V8 than seeing it rotting in some backyard.

It's not like he bought the car brand new and removed the engine. It was already a gutted parts car with a modified V8 when he found it. He tried to track down the original engine but had no luck and decided to work with what he had. It's not ideal but this is a beautiful car and running around with a small block is much better than rotting in some garage because there are no original parts available.

The drivetrain would have been swapped out of this into a 2 door by the dealership, i'd say it was sitting around for a while and no one wanted to buy it. Sell the 2 door with an 'upgraded' drivetrain at twice the price, write this car off as a tax loss then use it for donor parts to make even more money off it. As the guy in the interview seems to suggest and i have had experience with generational car dealers/mechanic shops, i have no doubt it is true.

So much respect for rescuing a clapped out junker and turning it into an heirloom. These cars were built by Italians, built to be loved and enjoyed. I don't think the designers of the 250 GTE would be dissapointed one bit to see their creation given new life and bringing a smile to all who see it. If it had all its parts to begin with and was engine swapped just for the hell of it then real purists could jump in and take issue. I say real purists because the vast majority of "purists" on the youtubes are posers just looking for attention. A true purist is happy to see such a stunning example of a restored vehicle, once it has lost it's matching numbers parts it ceases to be "pure" and unless, as the owner actually attempted, you can track down the matching numbers parts then you may as well put something exciting in there and make it roadworthy.I have no respect for any "car guy", purist or otherwise, that just lets these wonderful vehicles sit in a garage under a dust cover. If you are going to "collect" it, at least enjoy driving it, if not, don't buy it and let someone else who will enjoy it pick it up....

Whatever the people say, i think this is a great episode! Main complaint in the comments: "This is a ferrari, how could you put a foreign motor in there ?!?!?!11" The internet will always tell you a car with a legendary status engine needs the stock powertrain to be A CAR, not just itself. Like if this is not done to expectations, you're diminishing the value, character and prestige of the entire product line. I most certainly worship the italian v12 but not enough to justify this car to not be complete. IF you say that you might have your priorities a little mixed up.

The 250 GTE was my brother's first Ferrari back in the early 80's. All his friends had Ferraris and we used to caravan everywhere we went. my brother moved on to the Lusso and GTC4. Great memories of these cars!

guys, it was a parts car, like a test mule for the factory. It was already ruined. I got hella triggered when I saw the title but hearing the story, the car was already modified from the start so that lessened the blow. So this at least lets it run on the road. That said, I would like to see something like a V12 manual out of a 575 or something at some point in its life. Because this Ferrari was already ruined, I'd say it has the most potential to be the fastest classic Ferrari because the value is already destroyed, so why not mod the thing? Restomodding at its best :P

There are only about 700 of those cars still in existence, either you restore it properly or make way for someone who does. If you are into V8s and quarter mile dragraces, there are alot of other options.

Johannes Vossgrag of course I have and it sounds absolutely glorious. But I doubt it'd be realistic to look for an original Colombo V12 and it's still a great Ferrari engine so it can't be that blasphemous. Getting that sound is a pretty simple matter of doing the exhaust and intakes correctly so with today's tech, you could get that sound from a 575 motor. Also, the frame has prolly been hacked from the modifications so an original motor would be a waste to throw into a hacked up car regardless.

As much as i like originality, especially in classic cars, i really gotta hand it to this gent, and his father. Everyone keeps their old original. Stuff like this, thats done right, and with care, is just amazing. The Firetruck, is custom, does the job, looks gorgeous. Its people like this that dont just throw money at something they want. They put their dreams, ideas and creativity into it. Not only to make something they want, but something thats different, creative and something that even if you cant drive it, you can still enjoy it. I'd rather see this Ferrari with a Chev motor, then it wasting away in his garage, cause he cant find the serial matching motor.

+Fang check - it's bound to be faster. It may not be quite as well balanced (the small block may weigh one-two hundred pound more than the original) but it will have at least 100-150 more hp, and a boatloat more torque. All these 'purists' moaning about engine swaps don't seem to actually wonder why the SBC is one of the most popular engines of all time - it's relatively light, it's amazingly reliable and tough, and it (over) produces power and torque. And you can make them rev reliably to 7000 - but with that much torque, why would you need to? And also, hardly anyone complaining about this really seems to know their engines - if he wanted a Ferrari V12, he might have been able to find one of the last of the Colombo V12s, out of the 400i/412 - a 4.9 litre V12. And guess what - if he'd done that he'd still be a hundred horsepower down on the likely SBC output. Plus he'd have had to chop it around to make it fit. But he could at least have put an auto transmission in it then!

Johannes, you have the wrong guy there mate! I went for 23 years of driving and about 12 cars before I even owned an automatic. I drove a Mini clutchless for a month or two because the m/cyl had died (low comp meant I could start it in first gear - traffic lights would have been a bit too exciting otherwise...). As to my original comments, they were all in response all this over-blown "OMG I'm going to throw up" commentary about a guy who obviously knows exactly what he's doing with cars and saw fit to upgrade and do a slight retromod on one of the least liked Ferraris. Yeah it's not original any more - but so what? It's not like it was the only one of them left, or even original when he got to it; at least he (and his dad) did a great job with it, and it probably has twice the horsepower and ten times the driveability.

Loving the hypocrisy. Swapping a rotary (a truly unique engine, the main thing that made the RX cars notable) for an LS in an RX7 is fine, but taking a shell of a bottom-end Ferrari without the regular V12 and putting in a reliable V8 (which ensures that the car gets driven, unlike most other 250s, which sit in the garage because their precious V12s are built like shit) is some sort of a tragedy. It's crazy expensive to get another one and was already modified for a V8. owner can't track original engine down so does what anyone reasonable would do. I see it as he does. BarneyGold TM they said in the video it was a parts car, somebody already ripped out the engine so it could go into another ferrari, and swapped in the chevy so it was still drivable and sold it. New owner was never able to find original motor and left it as is. If you watched the video you'd not have to ask.

Milan Taj - the problem with that is that the GTE was the bottom of the barrel, Ferrari-wise for many years (probably still is, as far as 1960s Ferraris go), and engines were always being pulled out of the lower-value cars and put into higher value models or in GTEs rebodied as GTOs or SWB GTs. It's easy to stand back and criticise, but honestly - would you turn it down simply because it had an SBC in it? Besides, the Ferrari engine was OK, but there's nowt wrong with a Chevy small block performance-wise. You don't get the high-revs scream, but the V12 doesn't give you the low end rumble.

It is cool to have different strange cars like this one, but it is not all 100% Ferrari like you said. Engine swaps change the character of the car. If you boosted the small block and it made 800hp is it still a Ferrari? Well not really.

And I am speaking from experience, I have driven, although not owned, quite a few Ferrari's from the late 70's to early 90's, courtesy of a wealthy (very) friend.
