Chicory is honestly a game that I see is my "must play" for about anyone who does anything creatively. The way it manages to tie a very real and important lesson into such a comforting and welcoming package is incredible, and that lesson it tries to tell is very important. Chicory is a honest 10/10 from me, it is incredible.

When I played this game, I played it with a close friend of mine over Discord. It was a super interesting experience because we are both at certain places with our art. I'm 21 as of writing this and is new to the world of Digital art. My friend on the other hand, was 17 at the time and has been doing art for a long time. They struggle with a lot of self doubt, anxiety, depression, and many other similar problems. It doesn't help that they live in a bad home. But this journey was interesting because in a way, it felt like we were the main characters. My friend was Chicory (which is slightly ironic with them being younger than me) as they felt a lot of the same struggles and feelings that Chicory had. Me on the other hand, was the janitor (who I named Spaghetti), as a new artist in this world. It felt deeply personal to both of us, but in different ways. And I think that's the best part. The fact that we as two artist of different skill levels could get entirely different messages out of this game proves just how well written and thoughtful this game is. There's so many little things I could talk about with this game. The boss fights, the Art Academy, the fact that the game has content warnings, it's all so great. But the fact that this game can do so much for anyone of any art level (even non-artists) just proves how special this game is.

Holy cow I just played this game like a week ago and all I could think at the end credits was "I have no idea how this game isn't getting the recognition it so very clearly deserves." And then this comes out and I get all excited. I hope this review gets more people to play this absolutely magical game.

If there is anyone that enjoyed or appreciated the more difficult topics like depression in this game. I'd recommend Spiritfarer which delves into loss and grief, and learning to accept it and continue living. But not forgetting that person and the memories you share with them. It's emotional, endearing, well-written, and a proof that games are it's own artform and not strictly escapism.

Anyone who has even an ounce of a creative bone in their being should play this game. I may not be a great artist myself (mostly b/c I see others with way better art) but this game definitely helps those with any creative ruts of any kind. This game is a gem!

I'm very much more of a writer than an artist. So when I decided to make a text adventure with photoshopped images, I made part of the subtitle mention how it features badly photoshopped images. That being said, I found the limitations of me not being very good with the program I was using turned out to be advantageous. It ended up working out and I'm pretty happy with it now. So even though I'm still not much of an artist, I did make an effort to create something despite that. As far as I'm concerned, it's the only thing that really matters.

As someone with the artistic skills that begin and end at stick figures, this definitely seems like a game me and my wife might enjoy playing together, as she's always been the more creative of the two of us. Was great seeing this shown off at IndieLand, and it's wonderful seeing an episode on it. Keep up the great work, Jirard, and take breaks whenever you need to. You know we'll always be waiting patiently.

As an actor myself, I recently had a similar experience with Tokyo Mirage Sessions. Seeing situations that mirrored parts of my artistic experience helped give me the inspiration I needed to finish the process of making my own content, especially since theatres are largely closed right now. A lot of things seemed pointless for my art under those circumstances, but TMS reminded me why I sing, similar to Chicory here.
@Captain_Bottles2 жыл бұрын
I completed it a while ago, and actually started playing it with my 8 year old cousin! She’s really enjoying it and I appreciate the use of content warnings so I can ask her if she wants to play certain parts, and also the use of the reaction time and boss fight options. It really made the game accessible to her and we’re currently on chapter 3!

Oh boy, THIS game. This was a unique little gem from summer last year. Very zen, in a way, like an interactive colouring book. Though if I'd known that my favourite food was gonna be the name I gave to "Drawdog", I would have gone with Porkchop, rather than Pork Loin. Mainly because loin is a slightly more suggestive word, and also because Porkchop seems like the kind of name you'd give to a big dog like a pittie. I forget who recommended Chicory to me, though I think it might have been Errant Signal doing a little "signal boost". Either way, cheers! Also, I knew that folks from Celeste and Wandersong worked on this, but I had no idea that it also had a Night in the Woods alumnus on-side! Man, Night in the Woods... There's a game that left me hungry for more, despite being so good.

chicory had me hooked from the start. as a teen artist (and writer) who deals with horrible burnout and imposter syndrome, i really connected with its themes. and, of course, i spent a good few hours doing those art classes and colouring in every screen, which was so therapeutic. being able to relax in a game like this is something i think i needed. chicory is a beautiful game, it absolutely deserves all of the praise it's received! ((MILD SPOILERS BELOW if you deny to pick up the brush at the start of the game enough times it goes straight to the credits and that got a laugh out of me))

An interesting and fun thing that seemed like a no brainer with Chicory, is that I played this game on my display tablet monitor, allowing me to draw across the whole screen with a stylus. for anyone with a graphics tablet or display tablet, it's an absolute joy to play and a totally unique experience. The problem is, I can't imagine it being very easy to do a lot of the art sections using a controller and I think for me it wouldn't have felt as fun. But I'm glad people seem to have enjoyed it regardless!

What a brilliant review! I hadn't yet picked this game up, even as a self-titled indie games fanatic, for many of the same reasons you listed; a lack of art skills and feeling like I wouldn't get a lot out of the game. Your review has completely sold me on this game, I'm adding it to the 2022 gaming to-do! And thank you for the kind words - a very encouraging and wholesome message to all of us struggling with our art. Love the show, it just gets better every year man! PS: Had a mini heart-attack when you mentioned trophies on the ps5 version, I thought maybe the game didn't ship with them on the pc version! Lol. I like a little collectible-hunting motivation to go with my story driven games, ya know?

For a game that I recommend completing, I would pick Demon Turf. It's a 3D platformer with an amazing art style, a complex set of moves, really fun levels, a combat style that involves you pushing enemies into spikes or bottomless pits, and really huge bosses! In terms of completion, there are different side challenges listed in the stats from taking photos of stuff, fighting waves of enemies, obbies, and more. Every level will have 3 cakes to find, which are used for buying mods that improve your abilities when equipped, and a battery, which are needed to access bosses (you need like 90% of all batteries to unlock the final boss). Every level except for the boss level will have a hard mode that is unlocked for the world if a boss is ded. Instead of cakes, there are lollipops, used to buy different hair colors, and pets to wear on your head. Oh yeah, every level also has a speedrunning challenge, even the bosses. Anyways, good luck, it's a really fun game.

I've dabbled a bit into art, and while I wouldn't consider myself anything beyond an amateur, I am aware of just how many art styles there are, and I believe that each style, from the simplistic to the complex, from the elegant to the edgy, conveys a particular feeling about them. In fact, I wonder what kinds of games could take, or have already taken, these multiple varieties of art styles, and run with them in some sort of meaningful way (besides Super Mario Odyssey).

OK so dumb remark: wow, it's been a while since I watched your stuff, but I was really interested in Chicory so I clicked right away and... frog in a car. You have NO IDEA how hard that hit, because I watched your Mother 3 gameplay soon after I finished the game myself and it's been so long, I had no idea it was still an inside joke! Makes it feel like there's small stuff I can still share with random people even after years and years and YEARS (like just checked, almost 8 of them!!!), and it's funny how Chicory made me connect with that in such an indirect, but also intended way, and in turn in how you're still fueled by the same passion as all those years back. Also, as an artist attempt I am, you might or might not have made me tear up a bit at a certain point.... Keep rocking, Jirard. Cheers! 💗
