In most schools I’ve worked in it’s either compulsory or highly encouraged to wear it every day in summer - kids and adults alike. The southern hemisphere has higher rates of skin cancer than the northern hemisphere because of the hole in the ozone. More UV gets through the atmosphere and in summer you can get a serious burn inside 15 minutes!

The fact that a smallish beauty company made the front of TIME speaks to 2 things we should keep in mind: 1) magazines are in trouble AND megaliths like TIME have solid data on what covers sell mags, some of this is purely aesthetics, nostalgia & prettiness; 2) Beauty is a huge category but few people buy new makeup regularly, other than the few things that you have to replace regularly like mascara & concealer. The niche beauty customer & our least wealthy influencers are getting scammmmmmmed by the prices & manipulated by a multi pronged marketing campaign that is full emotional warfare. We are being made fools of, and I love watching beauty content, but I'll tell you, take a break for 2-4 weeks or even just reduce, and lo and behold, your desire to spend will dramatically decrease. We're brainwashing ourselves into a really big financial hole. We're very lucky that there are voices of reason & critique like Jen, but, for very little benefit to ourselves, we're throwing our money at an industry & essentially beggjng them to rip us off. Do we really want this ?

Hmmm… if L’Oréal has actively been working with a fair labor coalition and the Egyptian government to “address the problem” AND they were in contact with the BBC, so they knew a story was coming, why did it take them five business days to release a corporate response??? I’ve worked for very large organizations and there was always C-level approved PR written and ready to publish immediately any time we knew a critical news piece was going to drop. My initial thought is that the effort to address the problem is basically window dressing with no real action behind it.

Hey Jen! Since I know you like getting into the legal stuff surrounding cosmetics and beauty, I think it would be interesting if you researched about The Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act (MoCHRA), considering that by July 1st, it reaches its compliance date. For what I understood, this is the FDAs attempt to protect the consumer, by having manufacturers register the sourcing of their ingredients, facilities, and the registration of all their formulas, testing, and what not. This came to my attention on the Beautiful and Bother Podcast where they had Kevin James as a guest, and around minute 33, 34, he talks about how he thinks this will affect good and bad actors.

I am Dutch and personally know 3 people under 30 who have been diagnosed with skin cancer in the last 2 years (I know, anecdotal, but it scares me). I'm all for this initiative, and we love free things here, so that'll help 😂. Idk if this is just my family, but my parents don't use sunscreen. At. All. I'm the only one here that does, and my parents think that 'that first summer burn' helps with a tan, and that I'm silly for not wanting to tan at all🙄. But like you said... I don't want skin cancer
@unmellowyellow4 ай бұрын
Your parents’ logic was very much the thinking in the 70’s and 80’s in terms of the “first” burn being a necessary evil for getting your full tan on (I know, I know, it was a completely different time and absolutely clueless about UVA and UVB rays) 😊 I grew up in the U.S., so it seems like this logic was worldwide 😮
@ChrystalVanDusseldorp4 ай бұрын
My mom said the same thing in the 80's. I didn't wear spf regularly until my 30's, and it usually burned my eyes or made me break out so I just avoided the sun most days. I started using K-beauty spf a couple years ago and it's so good, a complete game changer.

My mom was a nurse during the 70s-90s and although she tans easily, she was ALWAYS diligent with slathering me in sunscreen. Anything to get more people to use sunscreen is great. I hope it works. Everyone in my family is pale, but the kind of pale where they burn then tan. Growing up we spent way too much time in Florida. Then my father moved there in his 50s. He has had melanoma twice now. I feel like I am lucky, because I am paler than everyone else in the family and never tan. At a young age, I started using a lot of sunscreen and just avoiding the sun. It wasn’t about cancer or wrinkles, I just burn really quickly. I hope it will make a difference in my cancer risk. I already see a difference in wrinkles compared to my immediate family.

I would love a free sunscreen dispenser, especially when I work down the road from a college because a lot of areas are not covered here in Florida. I also think here in Florida not a lot of people wear sunscreen and they think they don’t need it, I still remember how my dad said the same thing when we were at aquatica back in 2008 and he was a lobster by the end of the day. And also, I think I was the smartest in my second grade class back when I brought sunscreen with me, knowing that the sun was very harsh during recess.

So interesting about KZbin. To be honest, I’ve always watched KZbin outside of the norm but love seeing the trends change. I watch KZbin on my tv and phone every single day, and have for years. I don’t have cable and I have a couple streaming services too, but this has always been my primary media source. So they got me lol

GURL, didn't you just hit 300k?! Congrats on all of the growth in your channel! I know you've said multiple times that you've never wanted to grow "too big", and i totally get that. But your content is so good, I really hope the JenLuv community can continue to get bigger and better, learning stayin up to date on everything beauty! I just love seeing your success 😊 ❤ One comment on the future of KZbin beauty - it seems most of my favorite creators are moving away from product reviews and more towards news/opinion pieces. From who im subbed to, I feel like those who've continued reviews are still doing well, and the content oversaturation that was happening is now pretty well balanced between the two types.

The Brook Shields’ hair care would have to be pretty special to spend the money on it, there are tons of great drug store options these days. Unless they have something proprietary no thanks. And I’m 47 so love Brook.

Ulta made some problematic decisions. For me, they decided to use really shitty packing/shipping - things arrive broken because they’re poorly packed and so they have a lot of returns. I personally won’t have anything delicate (nail polish, etc) shipped from them, even for free. I’ll just buy direct from company.

Bingo! That is where their success comes from. I have been complaining that these companies are only worried about the short-term prophet. Not planning out the longevity of the company. Making shortcuts, to achieve their quarterly goal. (I'm just guessing and it's just my opinion) When Jen said they were planning for the longevity of the company. It actually made me feel good. Because it kind of makes me feel my guess is a pretty good guess. 😁

Free sunscreen would be great! But we also don't have the same rules, regulations, let alone elegant ingredients we're allowed to use here like they have other places in the world. I really wish we could move forward in using newer UV filters like they use elsewhere. I think that alone would hugely increase the use of sunscreen for the US.

why is our FDA so slow moving compared to other countries? i think Jen has hit that topic more than once here and I always back her up. I am turning 50 this year and I have been business managing retail cosmetics since I was 18...and I've been hearing about our infamous FDA and its super strict and super outdated policies...how do we get our FDA to roll with the future of beauty and our global peers of beauty lovers and safety first, of course. and thats my vent for today. :) thank you collective brain.
@frumtheground4 ай бұрын
@ivania321 the FDA considers sunscreen a drug rather than a cosmetic product, so they require new UV filters to have very rigorous testing and long-term studies before approval can be considered, but even with all of that somehow they're still unreasonably slow at testing and approval. Other countries have been using them for decades and haven't reported any adverse side effects. It's absurd.

I think, the next stage for the beauty community on YT is "documentaries" and commentary. I want to keep learning about unethical practices, so that we keep pressuring brands to pay their workers decently. That's what I mostly watch these days.

My boyfriend and I both watch/listen to KZbin (premium) far more than anything. Our phones, tv, when driving, doing chores, etc. It makes sense because KZbin is more niche than regular tv. I have more channels I watch/listen to on YT than I have tv shows combined.

It’s so sad that big companies still use child labor. They always take advantage of poor people. Those kids should be outside playing and just being kids. You only get one childhood. The children in Africa are also being used as labor in the mines. They do the mining for cobalt to use in batteries for electric cars and phone. Over 25,000 children are working in cobalt mines in the DRC.
@starlinguk4 ай бұрын
It's more complicated than that. They usually don't say "use children, it's cheaper". Instead they pay farmers and producers a tiny amount, which means they can't send their kids to school and the kids end up working for the farm or in production for the family.
