@JamesTorson6 жыл бұрын
On an unrelated note, I was passing by a business site with barriers the other day, you know, the kind where a guard in the gatehouse presses a button to let you in, and the barriers had skirts on both sides of the arms; that is, they were designed to prevent people climbing over as well as crawling under. I was wondering why we don't see that on level crossings given that some people are inclined to climb over the barriers?
@UKLevelCrossingsChannel6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I've seen many of those types of barriers, mainly seen at docks / ports or secured industrial sites. I don't know why they are not used at crossings. It's probably because the ones in existence are too expensive for the railways to use (not very efficient). It would perhaps be a good idea to include these barriers at crossings with multiple misuse or trespass incidents.

Most likely not true as on an automatic crossing (with full barriers), the crossing has to be proven clear before the train can be signalled across. On an Automatic Half Barrier crossing, the barriers only cover half of the road.

Well it's a single track line so it would be! @UKLevelCrossingsChannel3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, these are whats known as Manually Controlled Barrier (MCBs) crossings in the UK, as opposed to our Automatic crossings. The MCB types usually have full barriers crossing the whole road and are monitored by signallers so barriers or sequence is stopped if crossing is obstructed. Trains will be cleared to proceed past the crossing once lowered and confirmed clear. Automatic crossings usually have half barriers or no barriers at all and are fully automatic with sensors on tracks. As a result, barriers are usually lowered for less time on automatic crossings.

When i was route learning whilst with BR one line had 12 foot crossings ( farm and self operated ) although you were supposed to ring the signalman to check if line was clear and 8 road crossings of which 2 had automatic half barriers and one only had traffic lights and no barriers at all. It had aws signals at either end but semaphore signals everywhere else. You would only know there had been an accident when you next went down the branch line and there would be flowers on the fence. This was in the 1980s a d 1990s, seems people do not learn that given the odds of a train travelling at speed and weighing several hundred tonnes and soft humans, humans will lose out every time. A grain travelling even at moderate speed still needs at least 1/4 mile to stop. You will lose, do not try to beat it.

OK the little girl broke the rules, entering the shaded area while the alarm is sounding but she left the area and the barriers came down and it was at least another 1 minute 10 Secs (and that doesn't allow for the two camera cuts), the signalman had the situation in hand evident by his first cancellation and the train was hardly moving, hardly a close shave in anyone's book. Also, had it not been steam pulled it might never of happened or even been filmed because the Father wouldn't have been as desperate to take a picture and the cameraman filming the event may not have been there.

That boy who was in the bushy part of the tracks was lucky it wasn’t 3d rail
@UKLevelCrossingsChannel4 жыл бұрын
He was actually behind a fence although it's not very clear in the video.

Oh yes I realised that at the end Of the video

All that waiting and the train appeared backwards. I hate it when steam trains face the wrong way..
@UKLevelCrossingsChannel4 жыл бұрын
I think they always face this way heading away from Kingswear and Dartmouth as there the trains don't turn around, only switch tracks and change ends

Good job it wasn't an automatic crossing

Typical short-wearing behaviour from the father.

Never knew heritage lines had modern crossings Also the dad probably knew to stop but the lights are different in foreign countries so he thought it was a disused line and a pair of traffic lights

Those gates come down very early
@UKLevelCrossingsChannel4 жыл бұрын
Yeah they do. The crossing is usually lowered as trains depart Kingswear station. The train can proceed over the crossing when the crossing is lowered and confirmed clear so it usually takes over a minute before the train passes.
