Hey, Chill Zone, believe it or not, Marie Antoinette did actually say the whole let them eat phrase. However, she didn’t say let them eat Cake but let them eat Brioche. For context, Brioche, which is a very good type of bread, but was both expensive and rare at the time; thus, only nobility usually had it. Most bread that was available to anyone who wasn’t nobility was basically crap, given how almost all dough available to anyone who wasn’t a Noble was mixed with SAWDUST to make more bread while saving costs at the expense of the satisfaction and wellbeing of its consumers.

She, in fact, never said that, this quote is actually taken from 'Confessions' by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and has been wrongly attributed to the queen. In the collective imagination, Marie Antoinette would have pronounced this sentence on October 5, 1789, when Parisians came to complain about the increase in the price of bread under the windows of the king and queen at Versailles. In his work, the philosopher of the Enlightenment, to mock the disconnection of a "great princess" with the people who lack bread, makes her say: "Let them eat brioche !". But Rousseau never names this "princess", and this line has been wrongly attributed to Marie-Antoinette. Moreover, The Confessions were written by Rousseau between 1765 and 1770, when the queen was between 10 and 15 years old. The first volume was published in 1782, the second in 1789. Difficult, therefore, for Jean-Jacques Rousseau to have been inspired by the queen for his work and his "princess".

The clip that we see at 14:22 is actually an exerpt from one of my favorite movies (i was born and live in France) called "La Classe Américaine", which is essentially a bunch of clips from various old movies reconstituted and then dubbed to basically create a parody of "Citizen Kane", it's one of the absolute funniest movies ever, though if you can't understand french, it can be very hard to get the humour.

The tax on windows, aka lighting tax, actually was a thing. If you had more than 2 or 3 windows, that was an extra tax.
