@Gauntlet202110 ай бұрын
Why arms so high poly? I'm glad you asked! That scattered triangle effect is a common artifact of using automatic poly-reduction on a super high-poly sculpted model. That process works by segmenting the surface shape into bigger triangles, keeping the overall form as similar to the sculpt as possible. It's quick and easy, but leaves really messy and inefficient geometry. Typically, an artist would rebuild a low-poly model by hand using the high-poly model as a base, but given Chilla's output, it's very likely they skip that practice and just rely on automated tools.

I love how Chilla's Art games capture the paranoid feeling really well. By introducing the stalker aspect so early in the game, it had us questioning intentions and being suspicious of everyone we were coming into contact with. The janky poly-resolution also adds to the unsettling feeling of the NPCs.

just a small note ::: the jingle 41:55 you heard means the water is ready. the automatic water heater is the thing that stick to the walls outside your bathroom so you can easily set the temperature while doing other chores and it's safer for the heater system. 01:21:03 :::: picking flowers in Japanese is euphimism for wanting to use the toilet. 28:02 i think these 2 girls are the same girls in the Night Shift (the one who ordered caramel macchiato) but they were 3 girls, not 2. the one girl is still shaming their friend after years they never meet tho. what a shame.

@22:55 Funny you mention this, I'm an audio engineer that mixes live sound majority of the time. I like to have other skillsets on the side so I decided to understand sound design and implementation when it comes to games. I recently ran into how you do this in the unreal engine. Anything sound related has to be "territorial." Where you're walking, it's basically a mask that--of course, the player cannot see. So the moment you touch the railing, you're entering a new region. Likely it's an oversight or a situation where the creator doesn't really run into until a player notices this little detail. It's just these minor details tend to fall off when it comes to indie creators. Then it gets more advanced when you set the distance, understand how to make it more realistic when you turn your camera, crossfades, blah blah and sorts.

I had to deal with a stalker once. I met him at work. He was a customer. We talked for about 5min. That same night, he added me on facebook, commented on every single photos (I had a public page at the time) and even sent me private messages, trying to talk to me, telling me things like how pretty I am and how close he felt when we met. I politely told him that I wasn't interested and that I was already married. The guy got super mad...Like scary mad. Calling me a b***h and stuff. I blocked him but he kept making new accounts to get in contact with me. He even contacted my best friend in order to get my home adress ! I like that Chilla makes sure to connect all storylines in some way. It is clear yheyre in the same universe. Plus, most games show a certain part of society that women have to deal with (stalking, grooming, assault etc). Not all games are top, but I like that theyre connected and it makes it feel like every female character deals with this.

re: balcony footsteps, I'm a game developer and I don't know for sure either, there are so many areas of knowledge that depend on specialty. In this case an audio person or environment artist may have a better idea but here's my guess; in our engine, sound fx for floors are created by 'audio markup' which means flagging things on a material level to link them to the systems that fire off sounds. That kind of systemic approach makes more sense for a large game where you don't want to do that for every floor. Set the concrete to play concrete steps, now all concrete surfaces in the open world play that sound. For an indie title my guess is its something bespoke like a volume (fancy word for a box that contains something or does something when you interact with it or are inside of it), and the bounds of the volume aren't as wide as the walkway so its possible to walk outside of them and not trigger the noise.

Do we know Chilla's Arts gender? Night Shift and this, my two favorite games from them, (as well as the bath house one) do a good job of tapping into the "horror" of being a woman/femme, imo. "Is that guy staring at me just fucking creepy or should I be worried?" is a thought I have more often than I would like, and Chilla really captures this so well... I don't want to say real life as a woman/femme is exactly like being in a Chilla's Arts game but... it's more similar than you would think.
