I know you already played it a while back but Chilias Art completely remade The Bathhouse from the ground up, it went from being one of their worst games to one of their better games. The story actually made more sense this time and they've improved a lot since they made the other one. I think it's worth a second look, not saying you have to, just putting it out there.

@@pdspear1That was nice of them to offer it for free to those who had it, I'm sure they felt bad the original one was too bugged to play. I believe it was one of their earlier games cuz the translations were not so good and they still hadn't fully developed their menial job aspect they've become known for. Comparing the two is like night and day, it's a good show of how far they've come in such a short time. They are consistently getting better and that's what I like to see with indie developers.

Another good one is Dollmare, where you work in the doll factory inspecting the toys, not Chilla, I'm not sure who made it, but it's pretty creepy not reliant on jump scares, more weird/creepy stuff Oh and that recent one set in the horror movie theater, Massacre at the Mirage, for more clown action. (Pretty gory though a bit over the top, I think, but well made and good voice acting.)

1:20:52 about the body (and ghost) in the attic, it's Sarao's mom's body from the prologue. During the prologue, we play from Sarao point of View, where he's abused by his mother, and he snapped and killed her own mother with a Hammer, and he hid her body on the attic. At the ending, where Renya's mom scolded Sarao, he relapsed and thought he's dealing with his mother again, and he killed her just like he did with his mother. After that, the after-credit scene shown that Sarao's house is being investigated by the police and they shown the attic with blood trail, most likely to signify that the police finally found Sarao's mom's the body.

Trivia: This game is inspired by a famous case about child neglect in Japan (It's called 'Sugamo Child Abandonment Case', in case anyone want to google it) where an irresponsible mother ran away leaving behind five children to fend for themselves. In the end, the mother was forced to return after a crime incident involving the death of one child happened (This is probably the inspiration for why the sister's staged a kidnaping, and the house the children in this game lived in is similar to the living condition of the Children on the Sugamo case, which is full of trash bag and convenient store food because they can't cook/afford anything else) And the worst part of the story is, even after the Mother's neglect has been brought to light, she got off with only some probation and still got the custody of the remaining children. It sucks, but Japanese believe that whatever the reason, children should be with their real parent.
@vivid5072

Japanese culture seems excessively conservative in those sorts of ways in many areas. I guess that happens when your society is restructured by a foreign power with the primary goal being anticommunism. I'm very undereducated on the history of Japanese society, though, so I know I'm being excessively reductive. Would love to learn more about the roots of these sorts of societal issues in the near future.

Sarao is the "kidnapper". The body in the attic is his mother from the intro. He seems to be intellectually disabled, he is also the same guy that wanted to play hide and seek with the kids. He really meant no harm taking in Sakiko and Reyna. He sees them as "friends" because almost everyone treats him terribly and Sakiko took advantage of it. Sakiko tried to be well in school(seeing her perfect grades) thinking that will make their mother be proud of her and come back. When that didn't work, she resorted to faking being kidnapped because she thought their mother will worry and come back for them. The clown part is I think the stigma with Sarao's disability. They called him clown and portrayed creepy. Reyna being a kid, gets nightmares and imaginations from the story. Sarao killed the mom because she triggered him from his own mother's abuse and neglect. Reyna was smiling because probably of his hatred from their mother. It was suggested he was abused as well because it's mentioned he was scared of her when she was still around and was dismissive when Sakiko wants their mother back. These are kinds of child neglect and abuse along with stigma that got their life intersected.

Great video as always. Also, you're rocking the hat and ponytail! The body in the attic is the mother from the intro. The weird "mister" was the little boy who killed his abusive mom and then grew up alone. It's also why he wanted to play tag with the kids; he never fully developed socially and still had that childlike mindset. I believe the clown is just a red herring, but also a play on how things in life for kids are supposed to bring them joy, but they can be their worst fears instead, just like their mother. There may have been an actual clown in town at some point that led to the rumors going around school, but now is just a product of collective imagination and fear. Thank you for another great video! Looking forward to whatever you share next!

She talks about him in the third person because there isn't a way to say "you" in japanese that isn't like rudeness! people just use the person's name for "you"! So if it's a more literal translation it can sound clunky like that in English! A better translation would just be "I knew you would also feel that way" but that's alright!

you know, the sister not including the laundry soap could be intentional. She is _also_ a kid, one that has been saddled with essentially raising her younger brother without aid from their mother. Did her mother even _teach_ her how to do the laundry, or did she learn on her own, by observing her mom do it? She genuinely might not realize that she's supposed to use the soap, or doesn't know how much to use or where to add it, so she's just skipping it entirely. That quick tutorial she gave Renya is probably a lot more then she herself received.

Dryers are mainly used for towels and things of that nature, because most clothes in Europe have a low or no tumble-dry symbol on the label. So that makes me wonder if American clothes don't use that label, or if everyone just ignores it and wears out their clothes a lot faster.

So to clear up some confusion, Sarao was abused as a kid by his mother, presumably because he resembled his father who abandoned them and his mother took it out on him, though she regretted it it didn't come soon fast enough and he ended up killing his mom. He was trying to help, but the body in the attic was meant to show that for all of his good intentions he was unstable due to his childhood and while he probably would never hurt the kids and mean it, they were not safe with him.

about washer dryers.. i'm originally American, but have been living in the Canary Islands close to a decade. Here, off the Morroccan shore, it's summer year round and the people have a very simple "beach is life" mentality and you just don't come across materialism. You CAN find normal things like dryers here.. but it's just not customary and with the constant nice beachfront wind, I decided not to get one, either (despite having one all my life in the US). It's actually nice, here, all condos come with their own roof decks for hanging your clothes.. it's very "trust your neighbour" (we have a front apt key so only our 8 residents can get in). On that note, when you hang stuff to dry, you don't have to do it twice for it to not become wrinkly.. you just have to hang it to dry once properly. The idea of "putting it on a treadmill" sounded so funny to me b/c to have a treadmill but not a dryer i'm sure is pretty uncommon, but i understand the sentiment. As far as why i like it.. it gives me a more structured list of things to do that i think are healthy as someone in their late 20s with no kids, and for some reason i always feel like they smell better compared to when thrown in a dryer.. i'm not sure why. the detergent smell is much more prevalent for.a "fresh cotton" smell. Just my observation as soneone who's lived through both life styles. xoxo

Okay idk about Japan, but what you hang the clothes on kinda looks like something we have here in Finland, generally known as a "towel dryer". It's a rack made of pipes attached to the wall, which your hot water runs through, it keeps a stock of hot water for showers, heats the bathroom and you can use it to dry towels, cleaning cloths etc. It's usually not quite that big and I wouldn't use it to hang clothes (it's a bit hot for them since the water is ~60c) but that kinda reminded me of it. We do have tumble dryers, but not everyone has them (I don't). It is very common to just hang clothes to dry (also, a lot of clothes are hang dry only! tumbling wears clothes down faster in general)

Yes I love seeing some dryer discourse in the comments. It seems to be an American thing to primarily use dryers. In Japan, dryers are uncommon. It's washlines or indoor racks near vents/windows/heater, especially if you live in apartments with limited spaces for bulky appliances. I've visited twice and only saw dryers in laundromats or communal spaces. In SE Asia, it's washlines (it's sun/rain where I grew up). In Aussie and NZ, it's also mostly washlines. Some houses have dryers but it's just for winter or rainy season. The summer sun is aggressive enough down here lol. For less wrinkles, I just grab the shoulder part and whip the wet clothes up and down before hanging to dry. No treadmills needed lol.

I wanted to also second - it can be considered offensive to say "the" before Ukraine, so saying just Ukraine is important. For drying, in a lot of European countries in general we only have washers and then hang our clothes to dry, unless you live in a house with a large family and absolutely need a dryer (or if in the UK, where you'd maybe have a washer-dryer combo which dries to an acceptable dampness where you then hang to fully dry).

The airbnb did have clothing lines in the bathroom though, and like a heating fan you could turn on to dry the clothes. In germany it's mixed. Some people have dryers, some just dry them on racks or outside if the sun allows (So like 4 months out of the year lol) There are also apartments where you have to use a dryer because you're not allowed to hang dry your clothes as it could lead to mold. Edit: Also on the 'lock your door' rant, I'm not sure how the doors in japan are (the places I stayed at had door codes), but in germany front doors automatically lock when you close them. You can only open them from inside without a key. I have locked myself out an embarassing amounts of time because of this 😭😭

We also hang up our clothes to dry, here in germany dryers are not uncommon but they use way too much power, its just not efficient xD

Also, many clothes have a "do not tumble dry" label, so it's just not worth getting a dryer here.

Some washing machines have built-in dryers but too expensive. We do have dryers but most of the apartment or house complex doesn't have enough space to leave them. So might as well hang them up, less electricity bills as well.

The "Mister" seemed safe because you lost your (Attic Progress) when you had to retry twice from escaping the house, but you didn't go in the attic the last two times, so obviously the protagonist couldn't have mentioned to his friends mother that there were decaying body parts in plastic bags inside the attic as he never actually went into the attic before escaping the last time you retried and succeeded. Anyway, that's my guess to how she thought the "Mister" was a safe or harmless man because the protagonist couldn't have seen anything too unusual as you forgot to look (Check) inside the attic on your third and last retry, so that progression of the game was lost, but you must've been confused thinking that the search of the attic was still saved so you didn't think you had to check it again before escaping... either way though, great game.

48:14 That blew my mind a little. I'm a programmer, so obviously my view is biased, but I thought people used equations like that all the time. Though it totally makes sense that most people would never need to calculate anything more advanced than a basic + - * /, one at a time.

The beginning was the kidnapper and his mother. The body was his mother. He killed her. The letter you read was the kidnapper's mother's letter about her treatment to him being because he looked like his father. In the end, the protagonist's mother yelling at the kidnapper triggered the kidnapper and reminded him of his own mother physically abusing him. Her pushing him made it worse and pushed him over the edge. He killed her in response. The clown may have been the boy rationalizing his sister being missing and putting reason to it with the clown being the culprit. That's my understanding. There is also another ending.

If anyone wants to feel sad and depressed, just watch the film "Nobody Knows". It's from the early 00s and is inspired from the true story of a Japanese woman who abandons her several children in an apartment. I think Japanese live action films are usually pretty terrible in terms of quality and acting (and I'm a weeb!) but that movie is a great one.

Living in Japan and they do have dryers but not everyone has them since a dryer takes up space that a lot of people don't have and a combo wash/dryer machine costs too much. Most people I know just like to hang clothes out to dry.

I'd highly recommend Shinkansen 0. As a fan of Observation style game I think it's a better game than the entire Observation Duty series. You physically traverse the train cars looking for anomalies which results in some very good scares at times.

no John, im guessing it's just an American thing regarding use of dryers! 😅😆. We (in Asia) use dry racks to dry our clothes, or just hang them outside (hence the use of clothes pin so they wont fly away). We only use the dryers when we need our clothes to be dry as soon as possible so we can use them the next day! Also, why spend another sum of money to use dryers when sunlight is free 😂

Yes, they do indeed hang their clothes as the norm in Japan. Same with their futons. I do believe some places like businesses or wealthier homes have dryers, but they don't see it as necessary. Sorry for the Japan lesson, I just like to be thorough.

It was kind of funny, during the homework segment "Imagine if this was your homework." When I took Japanese in college, that is exactly what some of my homework looked like (Some, obviously not all). There's a systematic way that you're supposed to write kanji and the kana characters and it's exactly how it was represented in the game: top to bottom and left to right. My professor never explained why (and he was from Japan) but I assume if you do it backwards the characters don't look quite right? I'll have to try it one day and see. I can imagine children in Japan have the laborious task of constantly writing out those characters over and over again, just like we did with cursive, so they can do it in their sleep.
