Book, ladder, stair step, all the same thing. In my area they banned that method, probably because of wind. Nailed that tear off in a jiffy. Or is that denailed, unnailed, pulled. Pro job as always.

I wonder if a magnet attached to a small bean bag would help make it easier to collect your nails when tearing down a job like this. Like there used to be ashtrays that were built around sandbag bases so they never got spilled by the drunks. The sandbag would stay put while the magnet sucked up all the little nails around it.

Some guys will precut a bunch of their 1st shingles that start each row in the recommended 6” offset, so first shingle being full, next 6” shorter, then 12” shorter, 18”, until your down to a 12” and cant go any shorter. Then they put them together in order and call it a book. Not sure where this started or why but im guessing cuz its sorted like pages in a book? Even tho book pages dont gradually get shorter…

If I’m rebuilding a block chimney that goes through the roof, can I do this without removing shingles and use the old roof flashing, but use new counter flashing? The block that comes through the roof will be replaced plus another 6 blocks above it. They want to keep the existing roof without buying new shingles. Thank You! I need a video on this!

Off topic but have you come across a chimney (such as this, on the side of house) being knocked down to below the gutter line and closed off with a crown ? Reason I'm asking. We have a high efficiency furnace and only vent the water heater thru the chimney now. However, the chimney needs some repair (possible new flashing, rebuild top 6-8 rows, new crown, new liner) and it's sorta expensive. We are trying to decide if it's just better to get rid of the chimney, get a new water heater which vents thru the side of the house wall just like the furnace does. A roofer would close off the section where the chimney was (wood decking, shingles, connect the gutter). Mostly wondering how it'd look afterwards, because the chimney is on the side of the house, just as is in this video. And if you've seen that done in your experience, any thoughts. Thanks

Would it of been possible to reuse the old shingles? I'm a carpenter, not a Pro Roofer like you. If the cut shingles were marked on the back to keep track of? The full shingles that were removed doesn't matter I guess. If any new shingles needed to be added, only cut ones into and around the chimney? Just curious of your opinion. Very nice explaining and craftsmanship.

Is it supposed to peel off the clear plastic strip underneath the shingles? So that the shingles can adhesive to another. How can I trust the contractor to do the right job any more?
@GrandRoofingInc
@GrandRoofingInc 2 жыл бұрын
No the little cellophane strips are not supposed to be peeled off. Different manufacturers install them in different areas. The point of the cellophane strip is so during shipping and warehousing them while in the package they do not stick together. The shingles are oriented in such a way the seal strip is covered by the cellophane strip on the opposing shingle. When they grab a shingle off the stack it should reveal a ready to go seal strip. The only time you need to remove them is if it releases and sticks to the seal strip.
@yone2002
@yone2002 2 жыл бұрын
@@GrandRoofingInc thanks for the reply. I understand that the strips' purpose is to prevent shingles stick together before installation. How about after the installation? I think the strips should be removed during installation , so that shingles can adhesive to each other to prevent wind damages.
@yone2002
@yone2002 2 жыл бұрын
@@GrandRoofingInc I watched the video again. The cellophane strip is running along the center line of the shingles where you put the nails. That is exactly where the glue strip is . That tells me that the cellophane strip shouldn't be there and should be removed.

What is it going underneath it? I didn't watch the whole video. Another aspect you. When you're 60 years old, and up on a roof with a 12-12 pitch kneeling down, how long do you take to do the job before you say fuck this I can't kneel down on this shit no longer? I'm just looking up beautiful it and existing flashing. And of course I'm the middleman, caught between the boss and the homeowner. What can be done what's done and what should be done and why it should have been done that way and nobody knows the answer except me. But nobody asks. So, in that case you grab the tape, flat white paint, spray, some silicone. Bingo. Got to make sure you guy don't get no water inside, and that's set. And the homeowner wasn't flat stuck to the chimney. Well the repairs are made underneath it it's impossible. And that's what he wanted in the first place. It's impossible in the means that I'm not spending 4 days on a simple flashing job and my job was just to point the brick. And this is what happens. The boss wants to take the old flashing off and reuse it? Okay no problem. But it was stuck with some type of blue, that had no earthly means being even on this planet, it held so well, that it was all I could do is just not to shred the the existing aluminum haha, let alone put a slight crease in it. How do I know it's going to be waterproof? Because it was waterproof when I got here. It's even better now. If you want better waterproofing stick saran wrap all over it, and in about 3 or 4 years you'll have nothing there except a small pile of sand. Enjoy your work day.

Wood would've changed in color if it was in consistent contact. You should be ashamed of yourself. Rookie mistake but wow , what a crime on that customer
