Gov didn't stopped funding entirely but they priortized Tejas aircraft and thus dis-engaged the two programs. Without it bith Tejas and kaveri would've been in the books only just consuming resources. At least now IAF has 2 squadrons of tejas MK1 and kaveri is set to feature on Indian UCAVs

For those who are blaming IIT and NIT the problem is that no colleges teches you these things in India... India engineering colleges makes managers more not actual engineers... you need R&D and unlimited budget to makes this mechanical wepons ( or medicine or space tech ) and india only imports every technology be it ISRO or DRDO or HAL or PERTOLEUM or MEDICINE and always ask or 100% or minimum 80% technology transfer, *no R&D* IIT and NIT creates good IT or software engineers because of low cost of just 40k-50k rupees on computer..... but mechanical related fields need billions&billions of dollar... you make, it fails you make again you fail again and progress everytime thats what China doing now.... also China have trillions to waste but india doesnt so india will import paying millions instead of wasting billions in R&D

DRDO / IAF should realise critical 3rd party depence and plan for alternates it is shared responsibility. But since risk is with IAF they need to be more active in highlighting we have key dependency on engines and vendor has been bought by china. To be frank DRDO cant be expected to do engineering and then risk analysis as well. As a consumer you just don't buy what is on offer you drill producer / manufacturer based on risks and this is not 1 time activity it has to be done at regular stages of development / manufacturing
