Just returned from China. This is all true. But it's application is in hybrid models. A number of Chinese EV manufacturers use the same approach to extend range. Not just BYD. An internal combustion engine is added. But unlike Western hybrids that switch between each power source making them of limited value, most CN hybrids use the engine to CHARGE the batteries therefore adding hundreds of additional miles. It's not connected to the drivetrain. I've examined this arangement in several CN EV's. It's execution and engineering is flawless. Even the cabling and connectors/connections are works of art for those into these things. :-) There is NO QUESTION that the tech in CN manufactured NEV's is YEARS ahead of Western brands incuding Tesla in advanced electronics, connection to information infrastructures, smart homes, and autonomus driving.

If they are petroleums then it is not serving the purpose of reducing global warming. If it is hydrogen then all the safety handling of the fuel had not been solved yet. Though not a Techie but find China like Japan started by copying American goods but Japan didn't copy blindly it designed the goods to suit their requirement specially their space. This is a poorly made video to gain traffic. The BYD DMI+ has an ICE which powers the battery charger. The gasoline engine is compact and efficient because it is decoupled from the drive train. Nevertheless 46% efficiency is a breakthrough for ICE. It serves as a range extender for the EV. Some claim 2000 km on a single tank with a PHEV.

I don’t want an EV; they just don’t make good sense. “The Emperor’s New Clothes.” Why transfer energy from fuel, to a grid, to a stationary charger, to a car? Then there’s the hassle of limited range and battery replacement costs, and cold weather. I can better understand where a hybrid might simplify things but manufacturers won’t be passing on those savings; they’d manage to find a way to complicate it and keep it expensive. (-compare the price of auto A/C system to that of a house a.c. window unit). Why is it necessary to have expensive and complex onboard computers at all ? ‘Vintage Retro’ is the best way to go, and retain value. A bad computer absolutely destroys the value of automobiles. I’ve been through fleets; and I will never do it again!

Why then ship again by train or pipe to truck to a service station why do this when it requires on average per nhtsa data 11 kWh of energy when that 11 kWh will propel my Tesla further than a gallon of gas I your car, and the Tesla doesn’t need the poisonous gas at all. And I spend less time filling my Tesla than you do filling your polluter. I get up every morning to a full battery and can drive over 225 miles and do it again the next day. All while saving 4/5 of your costs plus no oil changes.
