China is probably not the first nation you think of when thinking about tanks. Contrary to popular belief though, China has a complex history with armored vehicles. In the modern era they now boast the second largest tank arsenal in the world with an excess of 9000 vehicles. The tank we’re going to talk about today though is one failed project that nearly saw the creation of the first and only domestic Chinese heavy tank.

You should play C&C Generals. You will look upon china differently when it comes to tanks. Or, i remember how overpowered my Type59 was back in version 7.3 in World of Tanks. @@homiespaghetti1522 The T10, especially the T10M was a full production tank with some advance features of its own like assisted loading mechanism, gun stabiliser and advanced FCS for the day. As heavy tanks goes, could as well be one of the best. Sadly it was in an era where heavy tanks as a concept were obselete. Things like T55, Centurions and Pattons were the way to go forward. Imagine that when the WZ prototype was done, the soviets launched their T64 main battle tank which was bar none the most advanced tank in the world at the time, it truly had no equal at the time. You would be comparing the state of the art main battle tank with an WW2 era mentality design of a heavy tank. No contest.

Chinese tank fan here, nice to see a video about this tank. From what I heard over the years chating with my friends and the stuff I saw in the tank museum, here's something I can work out: 1. Yes, this tank started its development AFTER the production of Type 59, don't know exactly why. I believe it's because the fact that by the time T-54 went into service, Soviet Union still keeps IS-3s on the front line, and this made us thinking "Should we build a new heavy tank just like IS-3?", note here that we WERE NOT very sure about what should we do about it. So there wasn't that much faith into this thing at the very first place. 2. By the time of this project started, all the engineers and skilled mechaincs were dispatched to the WZ-132 light tank project and improment of Type 62 light tank, so there were just not enough skilled prople went into the design stage. 3. The f#*king pike nose design was ONE MASSIVE PAIN in the rear department, extremly high man hour were needed to just wield one of this bloody hull and skilled workers were kinda rare by the time. Also that 750HP horsepower engine, well, it EXSITED, but the motor hour and stability were just...yeah. The 122mm gun were likely swaped out with just D-25T gun, with no modifications. Therefore when this thing rolled onto the testing ground in front of all the powerful people, it, well these's no other word to put it, FAILED. Did not meet the expection, at all.

Which is sad, knowing a bit more about designs like the Chi-Ri II, the Chi-Se, and the Types 2604 and 2605 (types 4 and 5 in WoT) would be extremely interesting.

From all of the sources I know, the turret was never completed before the WZ-111 project was cancelled. The engineers wanted to use a more sloped turret design to increase protection, but with the giant 122mm cannon and the added autoloading system, there's just not enough room to fit anything in a shorter and smaller turret. The test vehicle was also fitted with a 520HP engine rather than the 750HP one. the WZ-111 project was cancelled just 1 year after the first prototype for plauging reliability issues (already) and a shift of focus to new MBTs rather than heavy tanks.

The first ever "Tank/Panzer/Armored Vehicle with Mounted Heavy Range Weapon" in China were recorded in Battles between 206BCE - 202BCE. It was an flap-over ox wagon pushing by the ox in stand of pulling, a wooden structure were built on top of the wagon and cover the ox that are working as the moving power. The structure is about 3.5 to 4 meters tall, having a V shape thick frontal wooden armor, and the rest of the wagon were also covered by wooden boards that are thick enough to withstand attacks, it's main armament is a repeating ballista mount on top of the structure, and also carries 2 barrels of water to deal with fire attack. Each wagon were controlled and escorted by a 10 men crew, one will drive the ox inside the wagon, one mans the ballista, and another one will guard the ballista operator with a spear, the rest of the crew are mostly equip with spear and bow and act as infantry escort unit... This weapon has been used against Xiang-Yu's elite riders in at least one battle, but it did not achieve it's intentional goals due to the low mobility issue because the weight of the wagon.

Interesting to make its acquaintance, now. When I served in the 70s, our AFV recognition had a picture of a T-10 for the Chinese heavy tank and "conjectural." The Soviet's usually would show off new equipement on May Day, but the PRC wouldn't admit to anything that the weren't selling. Sometimes not even that much.

WZ-111 got cancelled in the end is also due to China acquired T-62 after conflicts in Zhenbao Island. They opted for improving Type 59 instead building new heavy tanks due to cost&lack of resources.

The effects by the Sino-Soviet split in the 1960s and the Cultural Revolution also had a big impact in tank development where Russian support was halted and the purging of technical experts by those two events. It wasn't until China's economic recovery that tank development was kickstarted again.

I love this series a lot and I love how you sometimes do things like Sahariano or Mexican tank. Things most people did not even know existed before. I would love to see more of these un known tank stories presented on youtube. I know that those I mentioned were probably known in their countries but outside of the countries of origin they are not known. Same could be said about Vehicle A from Yugoslavia. Story is known localy (from people who talk about tanks) but outside no body knows about it. edit: if anybody is interested in this here is a link to a site that has info on it: www.srpskioklop.paluba.info/tip-a/opis.htm You should be able to translate the whole page in browser.
