I am so sorry that I have to push back a little on this, but I feel compelled to speak. As a Muslim from southeast Asia, specifically Malaysia, I find it interesting to see Muslims that were born or raised in western countries to be very quick to believe, and even build upon this tired "anti-muslim China" narrative from western MSM. These are the same people that often push for dissecting and countering western MSM narrative about the Muslim world - rightfully so. It's very telling. They are very skeptical to western MSM when it comes to reporting on predominantly sunni Muslim countries or sunni Muslims, but when it comes to western MSM reporting on predominantly shia Muslim countries or China or Russia, the same level of skepticism is diminished. It is almost as if when it comes to western countries foreign policy that is not related to West Asia, Muslims in western countries have very little skepticism. Then, when Muslim delegates/leaders/scholars from various Muslim NGOs travelled all the way to China to see Xinjiang for themselves, came back reporting a different finding that challeges the western MSM narrative, these western born/raised Muslims will brand them as sell-outs or traitors. What's disheartening is, they often have a large following - rightfully so - because they bring forward underrepresented Muslim voices in western countries through social media like KZbin, TikTok, Instagram. In the end, they ended up isolating themselves and their followers due to their unwillingness to listen to a different perspective on China other than that it's a threat to Muslims and that it prosecutes Muslims out of hatred. Muslims in the west know very, very, very little about China the people, China the language, China the culture, let alone the nuances of what China is now versus what it was 100 or 50 years ago, and what it went through during that period, yet they seem to be so convinced, without affording any nuances, that China objectively despise Muslims. Witnessing this phenomenon from outside of the western world that many of our Muslim brothers and sisters were born or raised in reminded me of the early days post 9/11 when many westerners have a blind trust towards the media to the point of despising Muslims because they were, and perhaps still are, so convinced by the western MSM that Muslims simply hate their freedom. A few questions come to my mind, if China despise Islam/Muslims, why build and fund a school in the West Bank? Why cooperate with Pakistan in the China-Pakistan Energy Corridor? Why come and invest in Afghanistan? Why cooperate with Indonesia to build its first high speed train? Why spend millions of dollars sponsoring a science center for children and teenagers in rural Malaysia? Why many Muslims come to China to further study in Islamic studies in university? Why provide scholarship to outstanding students from Muslim countries? Why work with Muslim NGOs to further advance the halal standard certification? Why have Arabic or rather Uyghur script on its paper money? And if you say it's purely geostrategic in nature, then I'm sorry, you share the insecure mindset of the US empire. And perhaps that’s where we, southeast Asian Muslims, have a role to play to balance out the Muslim world approach on China because we see China working with other countries more as an effort to build bridges through cooperation and mutual desire to pursue development. Our diplomats actually engage in real diplomacy with China over the Uyghur issue back when it was THE issue, though it's up to you to label it as meaningless or useless diplomacy. We the Muslims in southeast Asia regularly come in contact with Mandarin/Hokkien/Cantonese/Tiong Hua people who have lived here for generations. We also regularly engage with tourists from China. In Malaysia, many Muslims even enrol their children in Chinese public school just like we send our children to madrasah to learn tilawah, so we view China very differently from the west. This East Turkestan issue reminds me of the conflict between the government of Malaysia and the self-proclaimed heir of the Sulu Sultanate regarding Sabah, one of the Malaysian states in Borneo. A few years ago, the followers of the Sulu Sultanate took it upon themselves to launch an armed invasion on Sabah because they claimed that it is a part of the Sulu Sultanate in south Philippines. How did the Malaysian government respond? The army killed many of the armed invaders and those who survived were jailed. They were Muslims just like me, but I do not support their cause. True, a cause is a cause, we cannot judge a cause based on who support the cause, even if zionist israel support the cause, even when ISIS is their ally I guess. Similarly, we cannot judge a cause based on the religion of the people inside the cause. Back to Malaysia, was it a horrific response? Yes, definitely. But to make it as an anti-Muslim issue would be ridiculous, though I think it would be much easier to frame the response of the Malaysian government from an anti-muslim perspective if Malaysia isn't a Muslim country, isn't a Muslim majority country and it has a not-so-clean history with Islam/Muslims. Please, I'm not denying any suffering or any sacrifice that Uyghurs in China went through. Neither do I intend to be an apologist, though the blame is mine if I sound like one due to my inability to express myself effectively as I intended. I'm sure throughout modern history, China doesn't have a clean record in human rights, and I think that to this day, China doesn't have the best understanding of what Islam is truly about, because its contact with Islam for the last few decades is in the context of resistance/separatist political cause that happen to be Muslim's. And if it's the conviction of Muslims in western countries that China is an enemy of Islam then so be it. Let us southeast Asian Muslims continue to relentlessly build the bridge diplomatically, economically, culturally. I am cautiously optimistic there will be more success in promoting what Islam is truly about by doing that than by refusing to build bridges. If this channel invited Mr. Sami Hamdi - who some falsely label him as soft on RTE or soft on MBS just because they don't like hearing his analysis - to discuss raving and twerking in Saudi Arabia, the land of our two holiest masjids, and at the end of that discussion we have a more nuanced view on Saudi Arabia that goes beyond a shallow "MBS bad", and that we are willing to hear that kind of nuanced discussion, then I asked the question, why can't this channel invite someone who is able to provide a deeply nuanced discussion or even challenge the western MSM narrative about the Uyghur issue that goes well beyond a simple "China prosecute Muslims" when in fact Uyghur is only one of the many Muslim groups scattered all over China? Invite someone outside of both the East Turkestan political movements or the government of China. Delve just a little deeper with the intention to understand, and the narrative about it as an issue of China prosecuting the Uyghur because of their religion which is Islam, quickly crumbles. Please invite Mr. Hussein Askary or anyone from the TWMCC to address and discuss all the allegations mentioned in this episode. Even the great Dr. Mahathir Mohamad would support going beyond a simple "anti-muslim China" narrative.

From what I remember, the U.N released a report saying that China may have commited crimes against humanity. So, no denying the Uyghurs are suffering, genocide in the current definition is a bit of a stretch, but cultural genocide might be more fitting. Personally it sounds like activism for East Turkistan instead of Uyghurs alone, but still I don't get some people in the comments. Muslims are likely to be having their religion forced out of them. Innocents amongst the millions who refuse are likely to be suffering horrible things for the sake of indoctrination. How can we just brush it off? What happened to our humanity? Whether the U.S is hijacking the situation or not for political reasons, it doesn't change that China is targeting the group of people one way or another.

Bottom line is that China oppresses the Uighurs. Every single person in China is repressed in some way. The CCP runs a one party totalitarian state with little regard to personal rights. However, there are degrees of repression. The Hui are ethnic Chinese Muslims. They have a lot in common by race and culture. So they eat some similar foods and have common dress etc. So they aren't seen as a threat in the same way Turkic Uighurs are. The Uighurs are also seen as seperatists. And the more the Chinese repress the Uighuras, the more seperaratist the Uighurs will naturally become.

We must never be deceived by the popularity of a cause. Uyghurs matter as much as Palestine, as do the Rohingya and Kashmir. Muslims stand by Muslims. I’m not Muslim myself, but am aware that in my home country of the UK representation and the Islamic voice represented I the mainstream media are lacking in terms of amount of exposure but also, for me, they are just about always at odds with the impressions and characteristics of Muslims that have been part of my life whether superficially, as acquaintances, and, in some cases, happily as friends. I watched the episode despite the title which was a fairly hardline position on what is happening in Xinjiang, even though you did say more than once that there are many voices globally that question the narrative of a genocide taking place. Your title indicated that you had made up your mind on the matter and as such I didn’t think it was going to be either balanced or nuanced. Nonetheless, it’s important to listen to people you may disagree with as much as those you may agree with. Even tough you yourself gave little to definitively indicate where you stood, the title, the use East Turkestan, the lack of any meaningful challenge to any your interviewee claimed, and the complete absence of any presentation of the many difficulties the narrative presented has, fairly or unfairly gave the impression that you have a hardline belief that genocide is taking place in Xinjiang. Of course, you have a right to hold whatever view you wish. In this particular case your apparent position seems so incongruous with a claim of being a thinking person. You failed even to ask the most basic of questions that is the key to China’s positions that its actions (whatever they may be) are to counter terrorism,,, was there as problem in China of terrorist attacks being committed by members of the Uyghur community? Re: your last argument, I'm living in a Western country myself and two of my friends are of Uyghur descent, one of them was born in Kazachstan, the other in Kyrgyzstan. One of them recommended me a restaurant, owned by Uyhurs who only speak Russian. All of them only one generation removed from East-Turkestan. I strongly believe we simply have not been exposed to their stories yet.

ok, some basic facts: 1. not all Uyghur people are muslims, and not all muslims in china are Uyghur, for example another major chinese muslim community is Hui. 2. there are nearly 25000 mosques in Xinjiang along, more than the entire US, UK, Germany, France these 4 countries combined together. as far as i know (and visited), in every major city there are mosques for religious people to go, same for churches or temples. china is huge, and it's none religious, so these locations are not like every where, but you can find them in most places. 3. Uyghur is one of many ethnic groups in Xinjiang, accounts for around 40% of total population in Xinjiang same as Han. Uyghur population increased from around 3 millions in 1949 when PRC was founded to around 12 millions now, life expectancy from around 30 years to 75 years. 4. there is no visible religious nor ethnic tensions in china, almost none issue for them, which is quite different and almost unimaginable in other places like in the west, it's very harmonious, different history, culture and values i think. 5. "East Turkestan" ideology mixed with radical islamic extremism caused terrorism in Xinjiang and china, one is trying to equate itself to all Uyghurs in china, the other one is trying to equate itself to all muslims in china. they represent neither, and china is against them both. 6. this extremism and terrorism problem in Xinjiang was once very severe, you can find reports about them online, horrifying events. china is like the safest and most peaceful place in the world, for such thing happened in china, it was unimaginable and a national shock. 7. the way china deal with this problem is sharp contract to the west, instead of wars and stigmatization of the whole islam religion and muslims, they focused on identifying and fixing the root causes: poverty, islamic extremism and political separatism indoctrination. so the solution are: help youth to learn chinese and Uyghur language, and develop professional skills, learn basic islamic knowledge, and basic political and history knowledge. 8. the west don't like muslims, and they don't like china, but they love muslims in china, and some useful idiots who knows very little about it. under trump, US removed some "East Turkestan" organizations from its official terrorist black list. 9. Xijiang is the major key hub for BRI. 10. I listened to the entire show to give this guest a fair hearing. He claims 8 million Uyghurs processed through concentration camps which is just logistically impossible. Such huge people movements in an open area like the Tamrin Basin would be easily recorded by satellite. Claiming widespread "rape" is bearing false witness and just evil. Claiming that all Islamic countries support China on the Uyghur issue just because of "economic interests" is contradictory, on the other hand he claims that China is dependent on energy from the Islamic countries (which is true), then this means that those countries have leverage on China, not just one way. Claiming that "genocide is a term created by the West", and playing with the definition to fit the supposed oppression as genocide is again disingenuous. China respects Islam and Muslims, but a red line of any secular state is that religion cannot be used as a cynical tool for separatist activity. The West constantly promotes radicalism in Xinjiang (why do you think the US stayed in Afghanistan for 20 years, right next to Xinjiang). Turkiye where this guest is living is also a secular state, and frankly no Islamic state would allow separatism either. Even the UN Human Rights report issued last year and sponsored by the West tried desperately to find evidence of widespread oppression, but could not, and only resorted to innuendos of supposed oppression. Like what Dr. Mahatir says in an earlier interview, if any Muslims have a problem with China's policies, then talk and negotiate. Don't use false accusations and black propaganda.

There has been no genocide in any Uyghur region in fact the population has grown over the last 10 years. The Uyghur language is spoken openly and there are many many Mosques. Anyone who doubts this should go there to find out the truth. The least you could all do is talk to Uyghur on line, who live in Xinjiang and ask them what their life is like

I’m so surprised to read these comments below, because this man says absolutely nothing with details or with evidence, he says nothing that makes this story be believable and then there is the fact that independent investigative reporters have done quite a bit of research, and there is really no evidence whatsoever of concentration, camps or persecution of Uighur! Many people have tried to find this, and they simply cannot find. It’s actually a beautiful and very rich region with autonomous governance and facilities to re-educate and retrain people to become more useful members of society when they have fallen out, this small minority that that would be, it’s not anything to do with concentration camps, there is a NATO push for Turkish influence, and Weers abroad are being literally paid and used to spread anti-China propaganda… And I find it amazing that after so many times of this sort of thing happening all over the world people still fall for that, and others lend themselves to be propagandists! people can go to the Grey zone, with plenty of videos with Max, Blumenthal and Arati and Arijit Singh and Norton… And they go in deep details of how all of this is just pure BS and anti-China propaganda! I’m surprised these outlet stoops down to play this game !

If what this young man is saying is true, how is it that Uyghurs are prospering and living a good life in China; which they rightly should as citizens of China. Also, why are there so many Mosque in China and so many millions of Muslims including Uyghurs are living a good life all over China. The best way to verify if this guy is telling the truth, go to Xinjiang to see for yourself. Another point, if genocide is going on how is it that the Uyghur population grew from 5 million to more than 12 million and why are there no exodus of Uyghurs. What an insult to the Muslim countries around the world that according to the young man, these countries can be so easily bribed by China to turn a blind eye on the so called mistreatment and genocide of the Uyghurs. Sadly, this young man (whether intentionally or not) is sowing seeds for the western powers to try destroy one of the few countries who will stand up against the bullying tactics of the west. This young keeps bringing up Western Courts or Organisation to criminalised China. Without a doubt they will rule against China. Do not forget that they (the west) are masters of divide and rule. As for the children, they are not taken away to be raised up by the Han family, but put into free boarding schools (with the approval and knowledge of their parents) to be given free education right up to university (if they want). Tell me that this is a bad policy. One further point. As far as I know, China respects all religion and will never force a Muslim to eat pork. All religion are permitted in China, yes, even Christianity (which I heard so much that it is banned).

There are two issue that are intertwined here-being Muslim and geotechnical political struggle. 1. Being Muslim in chine means advocating for your value and demanding from China to grant the Muslim freedom to practice Islam freely, to raise children in Islam value, to learn and to teach Islam freely all across Chine and to have Islamic institutions to service the community. Freedom comes with responsibility, obeying the rules of the land as long you do not compromise your faith. 2. The geopolitical issue, I am not qualified but I do not like separatism because it does bring solution. Please focus to improved the situation with inclusivity and influence with your loyalty to your Country.
