I give mad props to Johnny for turning his life around to Jesus Christ. I grew up in Detroit back in the late 70s - 80s where there weren’t many Asians and even less Koreans for that matter. I remember growing up as a kid and getting in so many fights with Arabs, Blacks and White boys since there were no Asian gangs but God blessed me with athleticism, size and strength (6’6” 250lb by the time I was a sophomore in high school) so I held my own but took my share of beat downs too especially when it was 4 on 1. But I made it through and earned respect since I could hoop and an honorable mention all state football player. Therefore, I was embraced by my Black and White brothers in high school and college. Now I am an old man nearly 50 living in LA. Glad I didn’t grow up in LA as a kid cuz I know for sure I would have been jumped into KK or AB and probably dead or in jail! Jesus Christ saved my life and continues to do so everyday!

I agree with you when you say that it takes a lot to speak out on certain things. im asian and I noticed that in our community, we don't talk about our problems because of the way we were raised. we end up keeping everything to ourselves because our families believe that we are too young to even have real problems so when we grow up, we keep that same energy because that's what we were taught. it's good to finally have people speak out about their trauma. it makes you feel like you're not alone and that your feelings are valid too. we definitely are raised with a lot of tough love and it's good to educate people on that so when we have kids, we don't treat them the same way.

I didnt realize how much I can relate to this. I was never part of a gang or committed crimes but the way that Johnny described how his dad beat him up simply because he didnt believe he got robbed is traumatizing and forced him to join a gang. I had my rebellious ways simply because I wasnt listened to either. Glad you turned your life around, Johnny. I want to have beer with this guy one day.

Fr Fr. There's certain pockets of the nicer areas that still bad. You can talk to the mailman and they will tell you to avoid certain areas of Rosemead, etc. People that aint from the area think its all burbs but when you dive into the trenches of El Monte, La Puente, Baldwin Park, and parts of Montebello they still active. East LA is literally next door to MPK. Gang activities aint like how it once was in the SGV but for sure for sure you aint from LA if you didn't know about gangs. How can you not at least in the 90s to early 2000s.

As a Chinese-American who grew up in Montebello from '82-'92. I can attest to the animosity and general vibe from SOME but not all of the Mexican kids and definitely their older brothers and cousins, and even sometimes their parents. I remember getting into fights at school and in the neighborhood regularly (they always initiated it) and without a doubt 100% see how I could have easily taken a similar path as Johnny and China Mac; much respect to both of you for sharing your experiences.

Man, I love both these dudes for what they do. China Mac and Johnny Chang are the only ones out here who I feel talk about their gang backgrounds without glorifying it but rather discuss it with a retrospective attitude that doesn’t encourage the youth to follow that path. It’s like they show a learning lesson that these kids don’t need to go through the hell on earth that is the life of gang banging but can still be “cool” without it by just being themselves. That street you’re standing on (Garvey) is like an expressway for different hoods to drive through and then you had the 10 fwy which is not too far from there. That’s like almost the border of SGV and ELA. Crossing into East LA you have City Terrace on the left and across the 10 fwy on the right is I believe Metro/ cal state LA.
