We left India because we were afraid of being sent to the concentration camps in Rajasthan, in 1962, not because of economic opportunities. Please set the record straight. Many Chinese people were arrested and taken to Deoli concentration camps because the Indian government thought they were spies. Not a single person turned out to be a spy. The Indian government needs to apologize for this heinous crime against its citizens of Chinese origin.

As it's been quoted : " history can't be erased but can only be forgiven " The chinese diaspora around the globe must be pretty "pissed off" with the chinese govt. for not helping the chinese indian when they were ostracized, mistreated and tortured after the 1962 war. Same misfortune & tragedy happened to the chinese indonesian in the late 1990's before the fall of suharto's govt. Why didn't the chinese govt voiced out strongly remains anyone's guess !!! Had the chinese govt. conveniently forgotten that it was the total collective assistance of the diaspora chinese in south east asia that send monies back to their motherland to support the chinese govt in their fight against the japanese during WW2 ????

@@samgooi1905 Ethnic overseas Chinese were very divided during the Cold War era too. A faction supported the KMT, another was integrating into host country and the newer batch was influenced by CCP. It just take a few CCP sympathisers to make all of them guilty. Ethnic Chinese leaders of Malaysia had to sign the New Economic discriminatory policy in 1970 to appease the Malay Ultranationalist for 20 years. The dateline was ignored till now.

Similar but not exact, ethnic Indians are suffering in South Africa’s looting and burning of Indian businesses. The locals have targeted Indians. This is different as it is not government directed. What India did to ethnic Chinese is what the US government did to American-Japanese during WW2 Internment camps. The Indian government and some indian citizens are not that noble and freedom-minded. Such hypocrisy!

I would say this documentary is a very good attempt. The narration failed horribly. The reasons for the "Fading Away" were not dealt with adequately. There is the complete silence of the India-China war of 1962. And how the Chinese community suffered from it. Many were jailed without trial among the many horrible things done to them. Till today the government of India has not apologised for its actions.

I had many Chinese friends that i miss in Calcutta, i used to live near tiratii bazzar as a little kid i used to have many Chinese friends they were amazingly good human beings, they were a gem to calculatta , theres even a Chinese school over there . I am Hakka born in Calcutta in Chandni Chowk but moved to the US some 45 years ago. I miss the place dearly and my friends from St. Joseph's in Bowbazar. So much diversity in everyday school and home life. In fact I spend considerable time looking for my former classmates. On my bucket list is to go back some day but I take understand things are no longer the same. I have met Hakka people from other countries and even from Moi Yen or Mei Shen, and I cannot understand them. Hakka language is in its purest from in Kolkata so I fear the language itself is fading. I personally have not used the language having no one to use it with.

Yup it's more or less the same here but the pronunciation is a little bit different. I can understand most of what hakka ppl from other countries say. The words and all r the same only a little bit difference in pronunciation.

I lived in Hong Kong for a few years in the early 1970’s and it is horrible at what is happening there now. Those of us who are fortunate to live abroad in freedom are the lucky ones. I am forever grateful to the British government who helped a lot of Chinese to leave India by issuing us with travel passports because we were all made stateless by the Indian government.

The south Hakka came to Jamaica and now we are mixed and a lot of us Jamaicans looking for our family it’s from south China Hakka . By right, their settlement should be safeguarded, allowin only ppl of their community to live there, so as to protect its cultural heritage value. There're lot of people mix up the terms of Chinese and Hakka. In fact, the term 'Chinese' is quite similar to the term 'Indian', it means those who live in or come from China. Chinese is not a particular ethnic group, it is an identity of nationality. Hakka people themselves have their own identity, culture and custom which are very diverse with the northern Chinese (Mardarin). The relationship between Mandarin Chinese and Hakka is similar to the relationship between Hindi and Tamil.

Agree. Personally I believe the Hakka people are separate ethnic group, different from the Mandarin speaking chinese. Also when I visited Tianjin and Beijing many years ago, I noticed the Mandarin speaking chinese tend to look down on the cantonese and hakka-speaking chinese. That could explain the uprising in Hong Kong.

In China, only Mandarin is considered as official language. Speaking Hakka, Cantonese or other languages in public are regarded as uncivilized behavior in China. This video about Hakka in Chinatown seems really shallow, and lacks the real understanding of the Hakka people living in Kolkata Chinatown. It doesn't carry the voice of the Hakka living in this city, and it is surprising that the sociologist, Dr Ananda can blatantly say that he wishes to see Chinatown becoming a tourist spot. The question is: Without the Hakka (or Chinese) living in Chinatown, there is nothing for tourists for tourists who come here to see or hear. There could be many more reasons why Hakka are leaving for other parts of the world besides the reason given that these people are going for more developed countries. For instance, are the Hakka people in Kolkata being discriminated against? Do they feel a sense of belonging in this city? Does India-China relationship have an impact on these Hakka people living in Kolkata? Hakka leaving Kolkata is certainly a loss for this city; you have only the shell of Chinatown, not the people living in Chinatown and the culture they bring to enrich the city.

Unfortunately most of them do not speak Chinese. I made a trip there and spoke to some, none of the traders could read Chinese. They speak Bengoli & Hindi like the Indians do. Maybe the older generations could still do.

I don't think they speak Mandarin . Hakka is a dialect of Gan language . There are other languages in China like Wu (Shanghainese), Min (Hokkien, Hainanese,Teochew) and Yue (Cantonese).

@M t Han Chinese is much more like a large cultural ethnic group likes Germanic and Slavic. Every sub-groups have their own languages, identities and traditional festivals. Due to the political reason in China, they are classified as the same ethnic group. However, Cantonese, Hakka, Mandarin and even other Sino languages like Wu(Shanghaiese), Hokkien and Fuzhou are unintelligible among themselves.

They have their own standard to definite an ethnic group, which its definition is ambiguous and unclear. There're not only 56 ethnic groups in China, there're also a lot of ethnic groups that are not recognized by Chinese government.
