I like this Story Quest. They really leanred to make the PLAYABLE CHARACTER to be the Main character of the story quest and not some NPCs. Learned so Much about Chiori as well.

@@Chris-Dodge Eula's catchphrase is "I'll remember that" in the Chinese version. They changed it to "vengeance will be mine" in the English translations and now they can't use her catchphrase after her character growth. She used her catchphrase in the recent cooking event (this recipe is good, I'll remember it) and the current potion event. It works with the original Chinese version but not with the English version so they elected not to have Eula say her catchphrase. Osmanthus wine is also an English only thing. It's actually "osmanthus flowers and wine". That matches better with Venti visiting him alongside the original Seven and sharing dandelion wine from Mondstat. English translations lean a little too hard into Genshine Memepact. Also, Zhongli's name is a pun on the Chinese god of death King Yan (similar to Haydes). 阎王 (Chinese God of death) and 岩王 (God of Geo) share the EXACT same pronunciation. I guess in a way Venti is Charon and Zhongli is Haydes. Given how Yanfei calls Zhongli the "岩王爷“ (which is how the God of Death "阎王爷“ is usually referred to) instead of "岩王帝君“ (Illuminated King Emperor of Geo) in one of her idle voicelines, I think the pun is intentional. English speaking theory channels are only recently starting to catch on to this fact. As someone who's done translations, Genshin's translations piss me off at times.

@@Chris-Dodge As another side note, even the fan translations have problems. Cloud Retainer is the "Perfected Lord who borrows the wind to retain clouds" (借风留云真君). "Borrow" is a mistranslation. While the character "借“ usually means "borrow" in modern Chinese, it's actually more appropriate to translate it as "use" in this context. Cloud Retainer is thusly more accurately called the "Illuminated Lord who uses wind to retain clouds".

That quest with Klee almost calling Lisa "auntie" instead of "big sis" was missing from the English version which I guess could not be localized well into English as English speakers especially in the west don't address elders that way.

Unfortunately translations will always be an issue no matter what. Alot of words in Chinese and Japanese can have 1 character/word mean 20 different ones when translated. Its why subtitles are always different from slightly to drastically compared to the other for just 1 show alone. Don't even get me started on how some lines in sub can end up not translating well at all because it's more of a puzzled mess so you gotta guess what it means in context to a scene just because it didn't translate well what so ever due to the issue above. We can only hope translations can improve at some points but right now we got the best that is possible. Hopefully it makes sense. Everytime someone mentions 'improving translation' it's not that simple due to how the languages differ so vastly.

@@nobody-xh6iiThe problem with Genshin's translation is that they do an inconsistent, poor job that sometimes ruins the lore and the characters' personalities. Sometimes, Genshin does excellent translations only to slip up and make rudimentary mistakes. It's like they're rushing at times. As someone who's actually done Chinese to English translations for a company, I won't be pleased with Genshin's translations at all. I don't think the folks who've hired me would be pleased either. They are FAR past the point of needing to do a full rewrite in certain places in my opinion. "Translations are hard" is an excuse but it's not a good one. As a translator, it is your duty to at least try to preserve the original intent. If unsure about the intent, you're supposed to ask the original writers. Not enough "professional" translators do that. Genshin sometimes makes rudimentary mistakes like using the logic of modern Chinese to translate ancient Chinese, adding details and "flavour" that contradict the narrative, or mix up the subject of the dialogue. They got Lumine and Aether mixed up in the recent cooking event, for God's sake! How do you mistranslate "I'll remember that (XXX，我记下了)" into "vengence will be mine"? A change of such magnitude will mess things up down the line. As an example they had to abandon Eula's catchphrase in the cooking event, whereas in the original Chinese script they used her phrase to show her character growth. How do you mistranslate "osmanthus flowers and wine" into "osmanthus wine"? It makes the most sense that Zhongli is referring to the dandelion wine that Venti brought to share with the original Seven, yet the English translation invented a whole new type of wine. "Translations are hard" is good for wordy translations, imo, but Genshin's translations go past just inefficiency. Kirara said something like "Huh? That's too embarassing (这也太丢人了)" in Chinese, yet the English captions say something like "Glad you've toned in down." These example are not even effected by one word having different meanings! One exusable example is Cloud Retainer's fan-translated Adeptus title "借风留云真君": "The perfected lord who borrows the wind to retain clouds". 借 is commonly mistranslated as "borrow", where it's more appropriately translated as "use" in this context. Cloud retainer is thus the "Perfected Lord who Uses Anemo to Retain Clouds". Unless you're familiar with the nuances of Chinese you would not know "借" can mean "use". Fan translations can be much better than official ones because the fans may have a better understanding of the lore than the hired translators who're only interested in gettin the job done.
