Would have liked to have heard Chloe's answer to Winston at the end. I worked on a coal mine on the west cost for a number of years. It's the only place where I have seen wild kiwis running about. The mining didn't bother them in the slightest. As well as Kiwis there was also a large seagull rookery on the mine, they weren't bothered by mine trucks going past them night and day.

Cloe, You should be aware that steel cannot be made without good quality thermal coal. Steel is widely needed in many of the tools and equipment we use in every day life. All vehicles, whether EVs or ICEVs have critical components in them which must be made of steel. Likewise, bicycles and escooters have critical components made of steel. We will need fossil fuels for many years to come.
@Larshhhh4 ай бұрын
Steel can be made without using good quality thermal coal. There are several alternative methods and technologies being developed and implemented: Using renewable hydrogen instead of carbon as the reducing agent to remove oxygen from iron ore. This produces water vapor instead of carbon dioxide as a byproduct. Utilizing biomass or charcoal derived from sustainable sources as the carbon source instead of metallurgical coal. Increasing the use of scrap steel in electric arc furnaces, which can produce new steel with minimal emissions if powered by renewable electricity. High-temperature molten oxide electrolysis processes like ULCOLYSIS that use chromium electrodes instead of carbon to reduce iron oxides. Direct reduction of iron using natural gas or biomethane as the reducing agent instead of coal. While these alternatives are currently more expensive than traditional coal-based steelmaking, the costs are expected to decrease as the technologies mature and become more widely adopted. Several steel companies have already begun commercial production of "green steel" using hydrogen and electric arc furnaces powered by renewable energy. The key challenge is making these low-emission steelmaking methods cost-competitive with conventional integrated steel plants that use metallurgical coal. But it is technologically feasible to produce steel at scale without relying on good quality thermal coal.
@hepburn1184 ай бұрын
@@Larshhhh Aren't they having issue's with that hydrogen reduction tech? I have this nagging feeling I read they were finding the steel was having brittleness tests failing at rates seen only in hardened steel before tempering, but it was happening in steel that hadn't been heat treated yet. No idea if thats right, I might be getting part of a report mixed up with something else. Only thing other thing is that bit about scrap steel. That would require a lot more care in identifying, making the process more expensive, what the scrap is. If not, the end result is un-usable for a variety of uses because the steels make-up can't be known before its cast. Tool steels for example. They rely on exact concentrations of trace elements to give heat treatment the right result. If they didnt't know what the make up of the steel was they can't add the right amounts of silicon and chromium etc to make a specific steel. If you're just making re-bar out of it, then all good, use as much scrap as you like... I like the ideas you put forward, I can just see teething troubles plaguing the processes for a while yet.
@Larshhhh4 ай бұрын
@@hepburn118 You raise some valid concerns about the potential challenges associated with hydrogen-based steelmaking technologies. Let me address them based on the information provided in the search results: Regarding hydrogen embrittlement in steel produced via hydrogen reduction processes: The study in [3] directly investigates this issue and finds that the hydrogen content in green steel produced via hydrogen-based ironmaking (both solid-state direct reduction and liquid-state plasma smelting reduction) is similar to conventionally produced steel after vacuum treatment, around 1-2 wppm. This low level of residual hydrogen is not expected to cause severe embrittlement issues.[3] The authors explain that while the initial hydrogen-reduced iron product can have high hydrogen levels (around 40 wppm for direct reduction), subsequent melting and degassing in an electric arc furnace drastically reduces the hydrogen content to acceptable levels.[3] So proper melting and processing appears to mitigate embrittlement concerns. On the challenges with using scrap steel: You make a fair point. Increased scrap use in electric arc furnaces for green steelmaking would require more stringent quality control and sorting of scrap feedstock.[4] This is because the precise chemical composition needs to be known to produce specific steel grades by adjusting alloy additions accordingly. However, this is already a well-established practice in the scrap-based EAF route today. Advanced sensor-based sorting technologies exist to characterize scrap streams.[4] So while it adds complexity and cost, it is a solvable issue with proper implementation of quality control measures.[2][4] For lower-grade construction steels like rebar, using more uncharacterized scrap may be feasible as you mentioned. But for higher-grade alloy steels, controlling scrap quality would be essential regardless of the steelmaking route.[2][4] So in summary, while hydrogen embrittlement and scrap quality control are valid concerns highlighted in the literature, studies show these can likely be managed through appropriate processing steps and quality control measures as the hydrogen-based technologies mature.[2][3][4] But you are right that teething troubles should be expected initially as these low-emission steelmaking methods are scaled up and optimized. The IPCC is a political construct of the United Nations. It consists of three working groups and a task force. Working Group 1 offers the scientific muscle. The other working groups are focused on impacts and mitigation ... following the assumption that there is some degree of climate change risk. WG1 publishes Assessment Reports - the latest being AR6. The report itself consists of a summary for policymakers and technical summary followed by a set of chapters detailing research. It does not appear that people assembling the physical research data are the people writing the technical summary and even less, the policy recommendations. New Zealand seems to be represented by Andy Reisinger - Physicist and James Renwick - Professor of Physical Geography. Chloe claims that there is an absolute scientific consensus on climate change As a Physicist, reading the IPCC AR6, I am reminded by Richard Feynman: "I would rather have questions that can't be answered than answers that can't be questioned".
