When I was single, I had a rule against getting involved when she was still involved with another dude. I kind of broke it once because the other dude was a baby daddy who wasn't involved at all, outside of having helped cause the pregnancy. She went to my high school and got with him during a foolish "being black means being hood" phase in 10th grade. She told the black guys at our overwhelming white, suburban school that we weren't really black, she stopped doing well in school, and she started dating a football player from one of the city schools. He and his family didn't give a dime to her and their son, and he went on to college (lived in my dorm) while she and their son were on welfare. I took her and her son out a few times, when I was in college because we had been friendly and flirty before her "hood black" phase and I felt bad that she was in that situation while myself and another black girl who were in the advanced classes with her were doing well in college. But I realized that I wasn't prepared to become a part of her son's life, while I was going to school 4 hours away and had no plans to move back to our hometown or even stay in the state after graduation. She had some more kids by another guy and eventually got a nursing degree in her 40's. The other girl in the advanced classes is an Ivy League educated physician. Another situation was when she was still technically with the other dude. He went to a different college, and I actually met him at an event for black students at our school. He seemed like a nice, mild-mannered guy, and I didn't worry about him trying to put hands on me. He actually told to me to "take care of her" while he was gone, and I did. 😂
