I can’t find the source but I recently read that the actor in that scene asked the producer (or director) to change that line because it was so over-the-top. He was denied his request and so he decided to “act it” with such “drama” that he knew it would later be criticized. I actually like this line. It's basically a precursor to the anti-joke. It has the setup for a typical action movie one-liner, but the punchline subverts it with an obvious fact. You're clearly supposed to expect the answer to be "It croaks". And then you get something else. I myself an rather tickled by it.
