i was in the Army in 91 and remember the brown bag MREs. I was allergic to nuts so would trade my peanut butter for the cheese spread, my deserts w/ nuts for the hard brick-like oatmeal cookie and sometimes when i got Reeses pieces or MMs would trade for dried fruit or the corned beef hash entree. Love your videos, keep up the good work!!!

Love “Me Ancient” in every video with Ace and Micah! He’s become a great KZbin personality. When I discovered this I immediately hit the subscribe button! My grandfather served in Korea and finished as a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army, he just recently passed away, but he would tell me about the old “C rations” and I would always ask him what they were like. I'm a subscriber to both your sons channels. I like them both but I do have a favorite. I served in the Army from 1971 and I retired in 1994. My first 8 years I served in the 82nd Airborne Division Field Artillery. We lived in the field and I ate a lot of C-rations over those years. The choices were limited and we were still eating Korean War surplus. When you're hungry most things taste good. I became a Maintenance Management Officer in 1981. Oct 1983 I was assigned command of maintenance detachment in Grenada. That was my first experience with MRE's. They weren't ready to eat. Most had detailed preparation procedures and they didn't taste very good. Two MRE's a day for 38 days. Most of those ended up in the trash. I would have happily traded MRE's for C-Rations Luckily we had a mess hall that served one hot meal a day that kept alive. I did loose a lot of weight. I understand MRE's got better over the years. I hope that's true. I grew up in Salt Lake City and retired in Elizabethton, TN. You have been to Cardons Landing Camp Grounds on the Watauga Reservoir. If the Watauga Dam failed it is likely my house would be under water in minutes. My son was calling me Ancient 20 years ago. He turned 50 this year. FYI Simper FI :)

As an Old Marine (69-73) We had C Rats and I got in on the beginning of MRE's with both rations we added our coco powder coffee and creamer in a canteen cup of hot water. We called it CoffeeMocha it was really good even guys who didn't like coffee loved this stuff

As I sit here watching this, I have three unopened mid-eighties MRE's on my desk. They appear to be completely sealed and still edible. I tried one of the others in the case and it was about like what you are describing. A little stale, a bit crumbly, and the cherry nut cake was just as good as they were 37 years ago. I wouldn't hesitate to eat any of them if needed. However, the stubborn old grunt in me says that the C-rats of the early 70's were better. My favorite was always the turkey loaf, just not quite as dried out as the one in your case of C's. 😁

The beef stew MRE in it's prime, was like chowing a can of Cambell's Beef Barley soup cold. Both are actually good cold! Same with the chicken noodle soup. I'll pop a top on the chicken noodle and slug it down. Biggest problem with MRE's was they weren't in cans that could be used for booby traps, perimeter security, fixing bullet holes, and ashtrays. Had a OH-58A from Vietnam with a bullet hole patched with a C-rat can.
