One theory I have about why he takes those broad strumming motions is it helps his rhythm/timing while he sings and plays guitar at the same time. I remember reading he had to work on singing and playing guitar simultaneously when he joined Soundgarden. He definitely started playing and singing at the same time more by the early 90s with the band.

That's a good point, maybe the full strum is a one count or something. That would actually be really helpful if you practiced that. When he covered "Nothing Compares 2 U" he was doing the same thing and that song has a 4 chord progression and a 4 second count between chord changes and I went back and watched it and during the parts where he didn't have to do a little riff or a lick between chords and it was a straight chord switch, it was 4 broad strums, hitting the note going down and up so maybe it's just the way he taught himself how to do it that way. I remember the guitarist for Incubus doing the same thing but never knew if it was for show cause he didn't have to sing, or to help him keep count

Chris has the most beautiful vocals, such a timeless voice!!!!

That's Chris' natural strumming pattern. Kim Thayil ( Guitarist of Soundgarden ) has said in interview that Chris learned guitar with elbow movement contrary to 'normal' wrist movement.

Love how he moves his voice within covers to give so much respect to the original. I like the percussive sound of his guitar playing. It could be how he learned to play. Thank you❤

Better than the original although this isn't his best live performance of it. He also covered Led Zeppelin's Thank You acoustically and it's fantastic. Also check out his live performance of As Hope and Promise Fade.

Great reaction! Thank you as always for playing my request. I love this version of Chris doing it because it shows off his voice so well in my opinion. Really enjoyed your take on it. It's interesting how the grunge era singers, Chris, Eddie, Layne and Kurt all seem the have the mic awareness you talk so much about. I wonder if it was purely coincidence or what but they do all seem to have that ability.

@@THEDavidHeretic respectfully asking how far down the cue is my request for Chris Cornell covering One? Looks like a few others have requested it as well. Hopefully when you do it you also know the u2 version to truly appreciate how creative the mashup with the Metallica version Chris did is!

@@jasonkart1651 I'm actually not at home this weekend, so I'm not 100% sure exactly where it is. I do remember seeing it in the que recently, and it was coming up very soon....somewhere in the 50 - 100 range I think.

I love Cornell. I love Lennon. I love the song Imagine. Unpopular opinion her: I think he did this song a disservice here. Let me tell you why: The song is such a classic. It’s iconic. It’s part of culture. Cornell went out of his way to change the flow of the song by putting accents where they weren’t meant to be. It’s such an iconic song and I felt Chris tried too hard change it as much as possible...just doesn’t sit well with me. Was it a good vocal performance? Yes. However, my ears were uncomfortable.

Lennon is a great song writer of course, but after fully analyzing the cryptic lyrics of Kurt Cobain's Polly, I will always consider Kurt as the best song writer of all time. That song was dark, sad, beautiful, haunting, and a psychological mind breaker. But Kurt didn't care about explaining himself or his lyrics to anyone, it was up to the listener to really figure out the message behind the lyrics. Nothing is random in that song and the incident was so terrible and hurt Cobain so much that the only way he was able to process it was to write a song that lures you in with a beautiful simple melody and a soft monotone, gentle voice and you subliminally start becoming aware that something horrible is going on, and it's from the point of view of the purely evil psychopath that did what he did. People shun away from things that make them uncomfortable, Kurt masterfully and seemingly easily created a way that forced you to not realize that what you're listening to is something terrible that happened in real life. Finding that out years ago changed everything I thought about Kurt's lyrics and I already thought he was genius in his melody creation and lyrics.

So we're deducting points from an artist because of the expectations of him to nail a song, which he did. It was "perfect" "amazing" "awesome" but because it was expected of him to nail this song, he gets point taken away for nailing it. How would it have been possible for this performance to receive a 9/10? By not moving his right hand quite as much? By trying to copy Lennon exactly and not adding his own unique spin to it which you even said was amazing? I'm confused about this grading system. What's an example of a video that's been reacted to where they got a 9 or better? Layne Stayley Man in the Box I'm hoping, if not then all credibility is lost
