Chris Weidman acknowledges he’s already defied the odds by returning to the UFC after his leg snapped in half during a fight against Uriah Hall in 2021. But this weekend, Weidman faces Bruno Silva at the upcoming UFC Atlantic City card in New Jersey. Immediately after the fight was announced, he confessed that his body had been through the ringer and there was a chance the Silva matchup “could be my last fight.”

I also think it’s an identity problem. A lot of these fighters have been fighting since they were very young, they see themselves as fighters. When it’s all over, and they need to stop, it forces them to ask themselves, “who am I besides a fighter?”

"He didn't respect his opponent and paid for it with his consciousness" say what you like about joe Rogans commentary - but behind John aniks famous 'not the cloth from which he is cut' line about leon Edwards this is the best line in mma commentary history.
@almazingsk8er
@almazingsk8er 6 ай бұрын
Rogan's commentary is interesting to think about. He absolutely 1000% is in love with the sport and that is what made some of the moments like the quote you mention here. But, as he has become so busy with his podcast there is definitely a drop in consistency of his commentary. The only reason he is still around is because of how much he loves it but he simply does not have the time to put into the commentary that someone like Jon Anik does and I think it shows. My favorite commentary team is probably Anik, Felder, and maybe someone like Fitzerald or Sanko.

@@almazingsk8erthe sport has also just outgrown Rogan, there was a time where he was one of the most knowledgeable MMA experts around, but that was MMA in the early 2000s. It's not the same as it is today, stuff that worked back then doesn't work any more, and new stuff nobody thought of is very effective today too. It's like Harry Caray in his late years as the Cubs broadcaster, he was a terrible broadcaster, he was still trying to watch 1970s baseball in the 1990s. It wasn't the same, not even close. People still loved him because of nostalgia, and he definitely loved baseball, the Cubs, and the city of Chicago, nobody will ever deny that. But his sport outgrew him.

A quote that haunts me like no other is one from Soren Kierkegaard: “Thus when the ambitious man, whose slogan was 'Either Caesar or nothing', does not become Caesar, he is in despair over it. But this signifies something else, namely, that precisely because he did not become Caesar, he cannot bear to be himself." The fighters that reached the pinnacle of the sport - the ones that get to have Dana White strap gold around their waist - are especially concerning when we see them stick around much longer than anyone thinks they should. You could understand people like Diego Sanchez, for example, who continued to chase the dream of one day being a champion. But for someone like Weidman, who did become Caesar, it's much harder to understand the motives. He didn't have a reason to despair. Maybe he's in despair because he's comparing himself to the Caesar he used to be. If that is the case, Dominick Cruz' wisdom should stick in the minds of every aspiring fighter. If you become a champion, you have to understand that - eventually - you won't be, anymore. At that point, you need to hope that you're prepared to be the person without that belt around your waist...

As a former fighter in my opinion it's the ability to be selfish again that sucks us back in. In every other aspect of your life you have to be the least important person, you're a father, husband, son...etc first. In a fight camp you are suddenly the superstar of your own movie your the man. You can suddenly put yourself first (to an extent) for those 8 weeks in camp.. add in suddenly being a centre of attention it's and intoxicating thing.. You feel young again. It's so hard to describe even at my bum ass level how great it feels... When you've been the best on the planet and are getting paid well to this must be magnified by 1000! The problem is no buddy in Wiedman's camp is honest with him and given him the Rogan Schuab conversation. His chin, aka topnof his head, is gone. The flying knee destroyed his ability to withstand the damage he was ince able to. More over his gym has 1 contender that is winning and dangerous to their division. LongoSerra is a relic of years gone by and have not adapted their fighters to the changes in MMA. Merab is all they have and he is his own beast not built by the gym.

Dude come on, if anything Serra-Longo Fight Team has been one of the more consistent MMA gyms when it comes to adapting to the game. Their first UFC champion was Matt Serra back in 2007, then Chris Weidman in 2013, Aljamain Sterling in 2021 and Merab will be getting his own title shot this year and win or lose, will remain a problem for 135 until he blows a gasket (which will end his prime). If anything, the longevity of the gym has been quite remarkable and compared to AKA and ATT, underappreciated. Regarding Weidman I think he's too tough and delusional for his own good, I'm sure he has people around him telling him he should stop, but he's stubborn so he won't.

Aljo at FTHW is totally unproven and after getting KOd like he was, if Katter doesn't flatline him, Emmett will. Fravola ended up on BSD's highlight reel. Who else do they have? @@robbyk5266 Way to miss my point entirely bro. The fact that they've had Serra, Weidman and Sterling in three eras of the sport (00s, 10s and 20s) shows that your point about them being a 'relic years gone by', is nonsensical. They've still been able to produce fighters who've become champions. Contrast this to actual gyms that are relics like Jackson-Wink MMA, they've lost all relevance at the highest level since 2016 with only Jon Jones carrying their torch until he was kicked out in 2021. Or Team Alpha Male who haven't had a UFC champion since 2017 and all of their current fighters have struggled to break into the elite of their divisions. Do I seriously need to bring up other Relics like the Lion's Den or Brazilian Top Team to enhance my point? Sterling was a reigning, defending UFC champion at the end of the day and he only lost his belt like last year. Serra-Longo Fight Team is still relevant.

Yk... I just looked at all who he has lost to and it's really not as bad as it looks on paper. The only losses on his record that makes me think he isn't gonna be champ again is his losses to hall and tavares. Especially the brad loss.

I'm bad with names but the guy that said he's not the target audience for Nick Diaz is definitely wrong. Which the other guy pointed out. Just because you're the target audience doesn't mean you want to see it. It just means they are hoping that you will. The target audience is definitely the people that used to watch Nick Diaz, because like the other guy pointed out there isn't going to be new fans that know who he is and want to see him fight. The target audience is all of the older fans.

At 1:57 you mentioned Ric Flair, well he's not 90, (he's 75), and he now resides in Ohio. I know this because He comes to all the Columbus Bluejackets home games. He's not a hockey fan, (at least I don't think he is) he comes to the games looking for a market for his own brand of energy drinks called "WOOOOO Energy". He rides on the back of the Zamboni between periods and throws WOOOOO Energy into the crowd. I'm unsure if he is on dialysis or not but I'm pretty sure he's an alcoholic (I'm an alcoholic and we can usually smell our own). I will definitely ask him about the dialysis though.

Weidman made 426k disclosed pay for his last fight so they can't book him against a nobody. These last 2 have been pretty favorable matchups it could have been against a young killer on the way up the rankings.

To be honest, I wasn’t massively interested in Weidman as a competitor by 2021, never mind now. To fight at the UFC ranked level, you need to cling to the delusion that you’re invincible (to major injuries anyway) and I think once that’s gone you’ll be too gun shy to really make an impact, for the same reason most of us can’t imagine fighting in the cage - fear of damage

I thought Chris was done years ago there was very little chance he was going to come back any good after that leg break. Conor is in a similar situation only far worse because all of the money drugs and fame. If Conor comes back he’s going to get embarrassed. Chris atleast wants to fight foolishly perhaps but still he’s trying. I don’t believe Conor is trying at all I think he’s gotten lazy and won’t train seriously enough to beat anyone even remotely decent.

You're wrong for implying that fans are somehow savages for wanting Chris to lose. I want him to lose simply because of his level of delusion! If he were to say that this was his last fight win or lose, I'd root for him. BUT I know that if Chris wins he'll claim that he still has what it take to be the best in the world which he doesn't. He needs a reality check. You don't hear Jim Miller making false claims. He just fights because he loves to. If Weidman wasn't delusional he'd be much easier to root for. I got tired of his BS claims that he's a "nightmare matchup for Izzy" when he's not. Izzy's not a 40 year old Silva. Many fans root against Chris for these reasons.

Maybe that's just how he motivates himself though, like he knows he's not really the best in the world, but if doesn't aim for that it's like he's aiming for nothing. When you hit a baseball, you aren't trying to hit a flyout, you're trying to hit it to the moon. You obviously aren't going to hit it to the moon, but you gotta aim high.

@16:00 - Dana White doesn't want Weidman to go to PFL or the new Scott Coker org after the UFC. Jim Miller? Never a champ. People's champ gets the cool ending. Not ex-UFC champs.é Cuz the ex-champs are too valuable post-UFC to people like Coker and Jake Paul to re-USE. Dana White doesn't wanna let them

I think Chris Weidman has one more championship run in him. He's got everything you look for in a fighter: world class wrestling, granite chin, power in both hands, and the heart of a lion. He's just had really bad luck but I think he comes back better than ever and will challenge for that strap again. People need to recognize that he is a legend and possibly the greatest to ever do it! 💪 island for life baby

How crazy would that be? I mean imagine for a second that Chris wins by TKO ( Just total Domination ) on Saturday & calls out Paulo Costa or Brendan Allen, Wins that fight & then goes after Dricus !! It would literally be the CRAZIEST thing to EVER happen in the UFC. Crazier than Matt Serra beating GSP for the belt.

With Chris, I don’t really question him as much because he’s hardly had over 20 fights. So he probably still as the itch to fight. It’s not like he’s 30W-28L, 43 years old and doesn’t get the point. He’s obviously not winning a title but I can’t hate on him for doing what he loves, and paying some bills.
