How to Replace a Radiator Hose (Upper and Lower)

I replaced my upper radiator hose all by myself and I never even changed a tire before!! Thank you, Chris! You are an angel!!! The Chevy dealer soaked me for two grand to turn off my check engine light and 100 miles out of the shop it came back on again!!! I purchased the parts for $24.00 out the door and did it myself!! Just a little tip, when changing the lower hose instead of pulling the hose off and getting covered in coolant, drill a hole in the hose first to let it drain.

ChrisFix or rather than do that, there's an even simpler way to go. Just loosen the drain plug and let the coolant drain that way, much easier with no mess.

Following day I did my spark plugs and air filter. Next weekend I'm doing oil/filter and rocker cover gasket, and fuel filter. +ChrisFix Ugh, one of my hoses fell off and I have no idea how to fix the stupid thing, its like plugging in two female connectors. Its a 99 VW Golf and its a small hose, and people can't seem to get the damn thing right or give me the right part. Its the upper hose, but the hoses don't fit.

I just hit a dog 😣 didn't mean to, it ran in the road while I was going about 35-40 mph (didn't kill the poor fella hopefully, it staggered off limping & crying😢) when I pulled over, all my radiator fluid was all over floor because I had a rip in my bottom hose from impact. ChrisFix hey man my radiator hose was the tiny one it was smoking because it was old and had a hole in it, so I got a new one and put water in my tank when I put the new one on I drove too my buddy's house and saw the hood was still white smoke from it. my buddy told me it's smoking still because the old hose had all that stuff in it so I just need too drive it off.

Brother you ain't joking about prying those hose lips. After I got the the factory spring clamps off, it was a beotch getting the freaking hoses off! I ended up getting channel locks to grip the hose and twist. The hoses came off a 1996 Ford Thunderbird LX, and I would imagine this was the first time they had been changed. Some of these lubes to help put on hose can be detrimental suggest you use k/y jelly on hose end and on nipple. It’s water soluble and makes replacement a breeze. No bad effects

Hi , I might be too late but make sure to never use worm drive hose clamps on any coolant hose application. Even though they’re a pain in the butt sometimes , make sure to ONLY use “spring” clamps. The worm drive clamps tear up hoses , greatly shortening the life of your hoses , but also they don’t loosen and tighten as the temp fluctuates. Again , ONLY use spring clamps with coolant hoses 👍🏼🙄

Sounds they used a stop leak type product and it closed off too many portions of your radiator. It worked...just too well. I would go back and ask for an explanation.

thanks for that video man! my cousin and i found a whole in my upper radiator hose of my '04 dodge neon with 246k miles which caused a leakage of fluid onto my engine which caused white steam to come from under the hood like you explained. it conveniently happened as we were halfway to six flags and many miles away from home. the gauge showed that the engine was way over heated. we found the whole and taped it up with surgical tape. the temp normalized and it saved my engine and my trip to six flags, but we knew that was only a temporary solution. i was going to just take it to the mechanic and spend the money but your video has shown me how easy it is to install an upper radiator hose! Now i have a new radiator hose and that $200 bucks the mechanic would've charged me still in my back pocket. Thanks dude!

You Sir have done the best radiator hose replacement on KZbin. I worked on mine today the problem was pushing the new hose back on the spigot. So, adding WD40 does the trick. Happy Holidays

This video’s 9 years old and is still exactly what I need for my burst upper radiator hose on my 2009 Kia Spectra, I guess the manufacturers said “don’t fix what ain’t broke” (except mine is broken) 🤣 thanks for putting this together! (Now I also know to be prepared for extra coolant still sitting in the hose itself, definitely gonna grab that bucket) UPDATE: had to cut my radiator hose replacement down to size, but it went smoothly and the hose is replaced. Still gotta get coolant and “burp” that system but otherwise I’m good.

Do not use wd40. Use radiator hose grease or silicone paste. Keep in mind if you apply grease on the radiator intake, the upper radiator hose may slide out more easily with the engine front to back movement. I only apply radiator grease on hard to reach areas. On 7:04 you can use fine wet sandpaper. If you are re-using the hose, always put the clamp on the same position on the hose or replace it with a new clamp. I always replace the clamp when putting on a new hose.

JaKori took me about twenty minutes to replace the upper hose (the one on the driver’s side). I didn’t get the other one. Just make sure you tighten the hose clamp super tight otherwise you’ll waste a bunch of fluid on the road when it pops off like mine did.

Excellent video! Very similar project I need to do on my dodge caravan 2007 3.3. Got all tubes and coolant . Except metal lower engine outlet tube. Not sure if that needs replaced, yet. No problem! Yes, I am exactly like that. I do all of my own work because I trust no one and they arent careful enough. I am super meticulous with my cars, especially my Vette. I have a few Vette buddies that have me work on their cars for that reason. I just dont feel comfortable with OBX. Let me know how the install goes and how it turns out!

Pep Boys quoted me $460.00 for a upper and lower radiator hose replacement and a flush and fill for my 2002 Oldsmobile Alero. I kinda feel like they are trying to rip me off!

I help friends and family out free of charge. Just buy the parts and I install. I have been told by them all that I do better work than the “trained” overpriced mechanics

dsgb1981 kinda? $30 dollars of hoses, about $30 to $60 and maybe an hour or two. At most $150 including labor. I'd tell them to go screw themselves.

I worked for Pep Boys for a couple of years. I would even then advise people to look elsewhere for repairs. Our labor prices were dictated by corporate, who paid us minimum wage to work on cars while they reaped the profits. (Oh, but if you upsold something that the customer didn't explicitly ask for originally, you got to keep 10% of that job! You could tell who the crooked mechanics were because they were the only ones making a living wage.) I got chewed out for installing a battery for someone for free (we were supposed to charge $70 labor for the job) and walked off. I've never looked back. If you're not buying tires and an alignment package (which is their loss leader, they pretty much price tires at cost) go anywhere but Pep Boys. Even dealerships are cheaper.

i wouldn't use WD40 to get the hose on cz its petroleum based it'll make the hose crack much faster. I'm really not trying to be a smart ass its just something i learned somewhere

+.a. .ko. I agree. Some silicone spray or silicone grease would be better. Some hoses are better not to lubricate at all, because they might get loose.

The best is a little dish detergent like Palmolive or Dawn. It makes the hose slippery, but won't deteriorate it, and the best part is the ease of washing it off your hands.

I've read that petroleum products such as WD-40 deteriorate hoses over time. I've been told a silicone lubricant is a better choice. What are your thoughts on this?

hnkfsh81 It is true that wd40 will deteriorate a hose over time, but spraying a little on the end so it slides in will not cause any problems. After the car runs any wd40 will evaporate or be washed away from the coolant system. It is best practice to use silicone on petroleum based products but most people do not have silicone grease and do have wd40, so since it isnt a big deal in a situation like this, I used it. My hoses are still in great shape and have not "deteriorated" at all. Coolant hoses are pretty strong because they are constantly hot and have chemicals such as antifreeze in them.
