First of all, Mads Pedersen is'nt a sprinter, like Rolf Sørensen says "Mads Pedersen is not a pure sprinter, he's a classics rider who sprints really well" MP will almost certainly lose to every pure top 10 sprinter in the world in a 150-175 flat sprint, he does'nt have the same peak power like the Groenewegens or Jacobsens etc... But he is extremely endurant that's his superpower and most of the sprints he has won has been from distance like 250-275 meters. If MP has to have a chance to win he must go from long or else the pure sprinters will blow by him quite easy. Take a look at TDF2023 stage 8, MP sprints from like 400 if not 450 meters, first he outsprints MVPD(Philipsens leadout), then Phillipsen is loose form 200ish, and MP holds him of to the line. If MP had startet that sprint with 175 meters to go Philipsen would've won. Mads knows he's not the fastest, but can be a problem for most sprinters in a long sprint! THAT'S WHY HE OPENS UP EARLY!!!!!

I'm SO tired of people not getting this. "He always goes too early" NO! He goes early because that's how he wins, by exhausting the competition with a drag race sprint. Losing from the front is better than not being in contention at all, as he always says

Mads would rather go too early and lose from the front than try to come from behind when he knows he can't touch the top top sprinters. He needs the timing and the finish to be perfect in order to beat an in shape Kooij. Mads is a 250 m slightly uphill diesel sprinter; the stage he won over Merlier at the Tour last year is a classic example
@pinnaclewd
@pinnaclewd 6 ай бұрын
I have to disagree Chris, as a quicker man (Kooij) Mads only real chance is A) A early move to out-drag or B) A late jump but run risk of someone going before you. When you are against a faster man you have to try something unconventional to see if anything works.

Many races now I've seen Plapp sitting up the back for large parts of the race. Why? I'm not sure. Is he nervous about riding in the middle of the bunch? He did it yesterday as well. And then burned through matches to get up the front and attack for 2nd place. Maybe he could have had 1st place if he was already up the front?

Mads is not a typical sprinter. You say he goes to early. But actually he is just going when there are no more in front of him. He is not a sprinter that can kick it the last 100 meters like the big sprinters. He can win if he is given the front at 200-250 meters, because he is able to hold a relatively high speed for a long time. But longer than 250 is just too much. I don't think you really can blame Mads, the way he sprints, he needs a GOOD lead out in order to win, and that is a hard thing to do. He just needed one extra lead out man on both of these stages :)

@@ChrisHornerCyclingMads P has never had the max watts to match a pure sprinter like Olav. He needs a longer endurance sprint where he makes the other sprinters hold their max watts for longer than they actually can and they eventually blow their legs. Getting that timed to perfection is much harder than for someone like Olav Kooij, who probably has the highest maximum watts of any sprinter. If Olav gets to "kick" close to the line, there's no one who can match that.

Pederson is a real top class puncher . It also could be there plan didnt worked out and had to improvise because Jasper Stuyven was on his end and Pedersen had to start the sprint to early ??? Yeah what an amateur that former world champion, 6th on the current UCI world ranking rider, right? Geez. Mads has never been, neither is he now, a pure sprinter - he is more of a classics rider really. A sprint from a small-ish group, under tough conditions or a slight uphill long sprint, sure. But other than that he will rarely stand a chance against a pure sprinter. He does not have that same kick or max speed - he is not explosive enough. So he has to do it his way to even have a chance. Get your cycling knowledge from someone else than this guy,

You have never been a sprinter and it shows in your commentary. Sometimes you don't have a choice to open early, because it's only Olav Kooij as the pure sprinter, who can "kick" into gear so close to the line. Mads Pedersen is not a pure sprinter and does not have the same "kick". Mads Pedersen needs the dragrace where you need to be able to hold your watts for a longer period than the pure sprinters are able to. If Kooij gets to open late, he will last to the line, because he has more maximum watts.

@@ChrisHornerCyclingHe is not a pure sprinter as I said. He is much more in the vein of Wout van Aert. WvA can also win bunch sprints, but he is not a pure sprinter and doesn't have the "kick", that Olav Kooij has. Just like Mads, Wout can sustain a level of watts that can kill the legs of many of the pure sprinters over a distance. But he is not as explosive as someone like Kooij.
@mikkelline11
@mikkelline11 6 ай бұрын
@@ChrisHornerCyclingwow that's pretty arrogant. Mads is not a pure sprinter like Jakobsen, Milan or Groenewegen, but a much more versatile rider. Mads P prefers a long sprint, because he doesn't have the top speed of the best 5-7 sprinters, but he is incrdibly strong so he can maintain his own top speed for longer than most sprinters. Usually 300-250 in a flat sprint and 200-150 in an uphill sprint. What Trek is often missing when he attempts these crazy long sprints, is a guy on Mads' wheel to slow up and create separation, so the other sprinters can't stay on his wheel and have to move around the teammate and get into the wind.

2:42 well that’s a load of crap because he is the “favourite” (what does that even mean?) his team has to do the work? If UAE or other teams want to win they to have to make sure they first catch Buitrago. If I was Remco I would say the same: if UAE or Roglic want to win then they should at least do some work Especially cause Remco doesn’t have the same strength in numbers as UAE and Bora Also if Remco had his team do the work you would have said it wouldn’t be good tactics to burn his team this much🤔

Tomorrow (well, today here in Copenhagen!), we will definitely see Mathias Skjelmose (say out loud 3 times, slowly: Skiell-moh-se - then 2 times fast, and u got it! :D) in the breakaway! question is, will he be allowed? It looked to be his fault just running up into the gap to fast that closed up quickly when the corner arrived. The corners sometimes help a lot to narrow, slow, and string out the field but other times help cause the crash when the road gets slippery in Italy. In general though I’m ok with corners just because a straight line finish is always faster speeds and the riders still seem to crash one way or another. Plus straight lines get boring to me. 😜🦋🍀👊

So correct....Mads always gets droppped of 100-150metres to early. I always wonder how many times he could have won if he'd not gone too early. Its funny he's never got Stuyven to release him closer to the line.

Probably a lot fewer. Mads NEEDS a long sprint to win, that is and always has been his MO. It's better to go early and hope you wear the competition down than risk being boxed in at not have a clear path. He can't match the explosive 100 m kick from Kooij, Jakobsen, Groenewegen types. He has to hope he can 'kill' their legs by forcing them to hold max watts for longer than they can take. I don't know why this is apparently news to Chris, but calling him overconfident is wrong when clearly he doesn't understand his sprinting pattern

@@mikkelline11 yes but this tactic puts a target on his back.

@@nipplegripple8581 that doesn't really matter, though. Everyone always wants Wout's wheel as well as he is a bit of a similar type; always top 5 but not necessarily the fastest. It is better to come 2nd or 3rd and be beaten on the line than not having been in contention at all. Sure it is easy to afterwards say 'he went too early' but he very rarely wins coming from behind. Look at the stage he won here last year, and particularly the year before in 2022. He has the front the entire time; they can't pass him. It's a recipe that works but the pure sprinters will ALWAYS be hard to best, it is a calculated risk
