If Cavendish is on his top form of 2023 he has about 25 to 50% chance of winning one. It only really requires 2 sprinters to be out of position, and there are a number of stages to see that come up., If is is not at that level then no chance.

So now that the Tour is just a few days away, I'm up for some speculation again, lol. So Tadej and team smoke the field on the first day, no? He tried to go flag-to-flag in Pink, so my guess is that he wants to do it in Yellow. And I think it is brave of Jonas to suit up for the Tour, just as it was for Evel Knievel to do another jump upon release from the hospital after a bad landing. And if this is an off year, understandably so, his simply competing is a personal victory and a stage win would be as big as Greg's first in the '89 Tour. And with Sepp not reaching a next level so far this year, has it been complications of some sort all season? Hopefully, July will help him recover for August. And thanks, Chris, I sure am looking forward to watching it all on the proverbial Chasterfield! Proverbial for us, literal for you because you are a big rock star. 😀

Just how important is stage 1? The profile graphic looks a bit frightening but none of the climbs are categorised higher than 2 and the final climbs are only 3. I hear your points about riders working into better form over the first week but is a week long enough for a rider to go from being challenged by cat 3 climbs to shining on HC climbs? Or are you suggesting the stage 1 climbs are seriously under categorised?

It is more that people are thinking that Remco Evenepoel or Pog will try a hard days ride followed by a pen utlimate hill launch attach similar to how you see them do it in the Spring one day races. If Jonas is not on top form he will not be able to keep up. Very few riders can, espcially if Remco and Pog get away rogether and work together to put time into Jonas.

I agree stage 1 might be overestimated. It's more or less as though as stage 1 of the 2023 tour, not so much tougher. The climbs are a little bit longer, but they are not steep.

So your thinking is, for the early stages Pogi's strategy is to go all in like a one-day race, get a lead and then let his team defend against everything the other three throw at him? Makes sense given UAE should be strongest of the three in the high altitude, esp w/o Sepp. Pogi would still need to drop Remco once so he has a time trial cushion. Will the other three tag team attack him if they have the legs? Or too risky if they are resigned to riding for the podium? Maybe depends on what they think their time trial chances are against each other. Fun to speculate!

Sepp rarely places well in other races. He’s a GT tour rider, everything else is preparation. He was in pretty decent form earlier this season. Things began to unravel for him at the Criterium, now we know why. He’s incredibly important to Jonas, as he has been to Primoz as well. He’s pure quality and his absence is a huge blow.

from the start of this season, I think Tadej Pogacar is in his prime time, I don't think he will lose this year's tour de France. I always think the biggest threat of Tadej is Tadej himself. This year could be different because of the terrifing team he brings with him. But, is it posssible that this could be the last year we see Adam Yates and Joao Almeda in UAE Emirates Team ? Those 2 riders, especially Almeda could want to try to win next year Tour de France in a different team.

I saw in an interview a theory that makes sense. Maybe team Visma Lease a bike did not put Jonas on any race after his accident because they want to hide the fact that he is in very good form. So everybody is expecting him not to be well in the firt stages, but he migh just have an ace in his sleeve

Well - there has to be some concern about JV's overall form having spent that much time off the bike this year due to recovering from multiple serious injuries. If he is top 5 that would be a good race for him - think of last year with TP's broken wrist and how that affected him. IMHO MJ should be option 1A - he's had a stellar year including podium at the Dauphine so he can hang with the best. Betting all your horses on JV may be asking too much. As great as he has been the last 3 years, and including how good he was this year until his crash he needs recovery. Give MJ the free reins to take advantage of opportunities. Visma has only two riders who could contend for GC - use them wisely.

There are two open secrets: 1.) Vinegaard might be fit for the Tour or he feared that Jorgensen might rise, and even win the Tour. That could become a danger to his Number 1 status. A Number 1 is always hunted, if you do not perform others might and rise due to this opportunity, Thus, is he fit or he feels the pressure within the team?. 2.) Sepp Kuss, after they allowed him to win the Vuelta, thought he might be a GC rider, celebrated too much, trained a little too less, and is this year out of shape. It is more than convenient that they have to decide with saddened eyes that he cannot join the roaster. Do you really believe that? No, they did not want to include him, and that was a good reason to proceed. Leading a team is about politics within the team, they just share with the public a false image. Understandable, as they do not want that other teams know the truth, but analytics paint another picture.

Surely the fact he has no race sharpness has to be a real concern? Chris do you believe he has avoided racing worried another crash would finish his season and or he doesn't want Pogi, Primoz and Remco to see he is off the pace? It is much simpler than reviewed here. Pogacar will not allow others to win the TdF. That includes teammates. If Vingegaard is not match-ready from day one and able to follow Pogacar to the steep climbs, the TdF will be a lukewarm affair like the Giro.

Obviously a huge loss for Visma, but I honestly hadn’t seen enough from him this year to feel that he would have been the same difference maker that he was last year. The 2024 Kuss can’t replace Kuss of the yesteryear. The relevant question is whether Lemmen can replace Kuss of 2024. The other question of whether Lemmen can replace peak Kuss is just fantasy cycling. Kuss is definitely paying for his overexertion last year. Two GTs on the front even if only in selected days and one as leader is too much. Adam Hansen is a break away specialist so “resting” most days when he made his 20 consecutive GT record.

Sepp Kuss is overrated as a GC rider, but is absolutely underrated as a super domestique. This will hurt Visma, especially because TP and UAE are going to make it hurt. Why else would you bring six climbers? They want to make it hurt where it counts when it counts. If JV is weak it’s gonna pay off for UAE in the mountains. Can’t play those games with TP when he’s surrounded by teammates. Remco is going to make a mistake and lose all hopes of winning the GC, you can pretty much bet that Primoz he’s gonna crash, but still have hopes at GC. I think Ineos is going to surprise everyone.

Tadej is a better overall rider than JV. If we look at last year, Tadej looked ready during the first 2 weeks, except for one stage. By the 3rd week, Tadej’s lack of racing before the Tour revealed itself. As of now, JV’s form is an unknown. If we use last year as comparison, JV can’t be considered 100% for not racing the last 3 months. As far as form, Tadej looks much sharper & determined this season. Relative to JV’s 2023 form, time will tell.

The Tour was decided when the big three crashed. This will be less exciting than the Giro. I am hoping the stages come up with a few exciting races. Otherwise this will be one boring Tour. There is always next year.

Can someone list out the situations where a climbing domestique has saved a grand tour gc win for their leader? Gotta be a very short list. You either have the climbing legs or you don't. I think the loss of Van Barlle is a bigger issue.

Their success depends on honesty, connection, loyalty and willingess to sacrifice of the whole team. It comes down to Jonas' leadership qualities. I don't know the guy, but I do know many Norwegians (some are my heroes): Inspiring that kind of sacrifice from non-Norwegians may not be in the cards. I wish them all the best of courage!

Visma may be one of if not the best teams in the world but last year they had good luck and this is their year of bad luck. 12 days in the hospital with his first race back being the TdF is too large an ask for anyone. UAE is better this year and if his luck holds, this will be the Tadej Pogacar show beginning with stage 1.
