In fairness, the early entries of the series were quite serious where Freddy and Jason were scary, legitimate threats and they got progressively more silly as the sequels went on [except for New Nightmare]. If you were a fan of the earlier entries, the tone of this film wasn't going to inspire you.

Yep they want every genre to have a masterpiece story. Horror movies of this type don't rely on a great story. They have one but nothing special. Horror movies need creative kills, intense moments, good scares, decent acting, good characters, and this has it all. Movies that need a great story for me are phycological movies, Horror movies that are more complex, dramas, thrillers. Those are story driven. Slashers like this, suoer hero movies, they just need to check the boxes for that genre amd have a halfway decent story that is coherent. They need to be fun. That is most important

@@firstlast9846 The thing is that Jason still basically IS a little boy (at least according to some of the sequels). He still feels he's fulfilling his mother's wishes. I'd just read an article about how they were trying to get Michael Myers and Pinhead to face off. The Halloween producers didn't want anything to do with it, though. Apparently, the plan was to utilize the Curse of Thorn storyline to pull it off. That sounds stupid to me. I think most would agree that the Curse of Thorn motivation, in Halloween 6, was dumb. It took away Michael's evil, his hatred for his family and turned him into a brainwashed zombie.

Fun Fact: The original ending for "Freddy vs. Jason" was going to have Freddy and Jason go to Hell and meet Pinhead, who would have said "What seems to be the problem, gentlemen?" Unfortunately, New Line Cinema could not get the rights to the character Pinhead from "Hellraiser," and so we got a pretty weak ending instead. Such a shame since this could've set up a new universe of horror movie monsters, potentially going so far as bringing back Michael Myers from "Halloween."

Rewatching it recently there are bits to enjoy and bits I really didn’t. The Nightmare series as a whole is really consistent and his films’ qualities are higher than Jason’s which I look forward to Chris reviewing it! In terms of Freddy vs Jason, the clear early 2000s editing took me away a lot of times but the sequences are fun and they made an effort for it to fit into the lore of the Nightmare timeline. It’s in many ways a Nightmare sequel. Although I prefer a few previous Nightmare sequels (3, 4 and 5). It’s not genuinely good it’s bloody entertaining.

I would have preferred a Pinhead vs Freddy matchup, personally. They're both former humans who've become extra dimensional beings with reality altering abilities, but the clash of their personalities would have been compelling: Pinhead the serious, no nonsense straight man and Freddy the comic foil. Supposedly, FvJ was supposed to end with them both in Hell, where Pinhead appears and asks, "Gentlemen, what seems to be the problem?" Unfortunately, the producers couldn't secure the rights to use the character. If that had happened, though, it would have guaranteed a sequel.
