I actually played Jason in this movie for about 10 seconds! I was hired to do art direction for the opening sequence. I built the Hell structure you see in the beginning. They needed some close-ups for Jason but the actor wasn't there. It was me getting chains wrapped around the body. The zoom-out of Jason's eye is actually mine, lol. Chapter one on the DVD was a short animated gif of my eyeball. My claim to fame, haha!

Same here. I loved it when I first saw it. It was kind of a parody of itself but not too crazy. The Jason X suit was bad ass. The kills were cool. It had some nice ideas. It wasn't the worst movie in the franchise. Wasn't the best either. It was Mid but it is always fun to watch

Absolutely love Jason X. Dodnt take itself too seriously, giving the audience what they wanted. But was still of high quality in my opinion. At the beginning we see how much of a seasoned and experienced killer Jason has become. And in the theatres i stood up and cheered for the sleeping back scene. Such a good call back.

It's funny that you mentioned the 2 people from Goosebumps, but for me this movie is the one where 2 of the actresses from the under-rated Andromeda TV series basically swapped their Andromeda roles and fought Jason. The actresses in question are Lexa Doig and Lisa Ryder. And, much like the 2 actors you mentioned, when I see either of these 2 in a movie I know it was filmed in Canada.
@Canuck1000
@Canuck1000 2 жыл бұрын
When I see these actresses (and many others in WB shows, etc.), it is not only in Canada, but in Vancouver, BC in particular. I smiled when I saw these two in this movie, especially since their role was reversed (human android).

Since the years have passed I always look forward to this one, because it's so funny. When doing a Friday the 13th Marathon, it's good to have a few entries that make you laugh a little more than the others. The "It's going to take a little more than a poke in the ribs to put me down" line is magic to me. I remember watching it in the theatre and I was laughing so hard and for so long (a case of the giggles I could not extinguish even long after the scene had ended) that I almost had to leave because I knew I was probably annoying the other two people in the theatre.

I laffed so hard at quite a few moments in the movie that some kiddos came up to me afterwards to ask why. I think I told them the singular "purpose" of Jason is to kill, n to kill campers in particular. It's his schtick, it's his sole reason for existing. He's humans' mortified fascination with gruesome death n that's why these films, n Jason, endures (quite like Michael/Halloween theme of killing gruesomely folks, n trying to finally eradicate his family lineage on..."Halloween"). Great, unadulterated horror filmmaking; no bells n whistles. Just base n sometimes creative ways to kill a bunch of campers for an initially sad, yet perpetually flimsy reason. 6:22 is the one time u actually understand the entirety of Jason's inner, eternal dialogue, which made the scene perfect n hilarious, n changed my "horror" of the genre to one of joy. I was giggling at those girls in the sleeping bags, giggling themselves, feeling Jason thinking, "why...won't...these...b*tches...die?...o wait, I know..." then 6:22 happened. One of the best cinematic moments of my life, hands down. I told them to watch the original movie to fully appreciate the series---they thought this movie was a standalone! Further blew their mind that Kevin Bacon was in it, too. O, wow. The passage/changes of time on generations is crazy.

I'm so glad that Chris didn't do a Hilariocity or a stompdown on this, because I've always rather liked it. Chris talks about actors from the Goosebumps TV show, but for me the point of connection was the TV show Andromeda. I had a one-time job with the prop master for this film and he let me mess around with the guns - really neat arsenal and I was quite impressed with the crafts. Appreciate the sentiment you give for how this movie can be appreciated as just a fun little romp to have on because I share that as well - it reminds me of the science fiction that would air on TV back in the day (We Are The New VR). Also, for Dov Tiefenbach, I'd recommend checking out "Pretend We're Kissing" where he stars (along with Zoe Kravitz who plays his character's nudist roommate and confidant). It's billed as a rom-com but it's more of an anti-rom-com, not in the sense that it deconstructs the genre or parodies or pisses on it, but more that it portrays a much more realistic perspective on romantic expectations. It's an indie flick that focuses more on the awkwardness and insecurity of romance and intimacy that offers shrugging disappointment and realism to the hopeless romantic. The promo material might make it seem like a quirky little indie flick but it has some very raw and dry depictions of dating life that's probably aimed more towards people who are cynical about relationships in general and it doesn't aim to bring you down. It's still stuck with me after I first saw it and I think it's unique enough to share. Aside from that role, I mostly remember Dov for shouting at Chris Farley in his boat in Tommy Boy, or as the guy with the big bag of weed in Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle.

I think that is universal for many fun horror movies… you are just looking or the unique kills and nudity as kids and young adults. You can probably mute the movie..😂😂😂. More recent horror movies are slightly different as they actually try to elevate the stories and give background stories. But these slasher movies speak the universal language of campy gory fun.

I first saw Jason X at an all-guys sleepover when I was in middle school: the perfect time and environment to watch something this silly. Around the time we had a similar kind of dumb fun watching movies like Freddy's Dead. It's something you can at least laugh at for how bad it is rather than getting angry about it: I see it like the horror equivalent of the Street Fighter movie, or Batman Forever (it didn't quite *commit* itself enough to be compared to Batman and Robin). Also I love how the guy on the left at 3:29 has such a trendy early 00s look (hair and all) despite this taking place in the 25th century.

The kills were iconic, though you were right that they should not have cut away from the professor's demise. The VR scenes were genius. There were some great moments of comic gold. I thought the banter between the cast was pretty good and it was the more enjoyable ensembles I've seen in any slasher. Overall, I rank this as one of my favorite horror comedies. It knew it was "campy" good fun. I've since become such a fan of the concept that I've collected all the Jason X novels and really enjoy the little universe that it created. I’ll never forget seeing this film in theatres back in 2002! I was in 5th grade. PS, I had a similar GOOSEBUMPS experience when watching “The X-Files” yesterday (also filmed in Canada)! I noticed the chick from “It Came from Beneath the Sink.”

Chris, you may not be familiar with it but there’s a channel called Sea of Tranquility, it’s mostly a music channel but they have a show called The Monster’s Den where they talk all about horror movies (rankings, themes, actors/actresses, studios, subgenres, etc.). Thought you might like it, the Monsters Den guys are a fun bunch. Love the channel, can’t wait for Shelby Oaks!

I remember I was about 9-11 years old, my parents went for vacation and my beloved grandmother, may her soul rest in peace, was taking care of me during this time, and it was summer vacation and when she fell asleep I watched all kind of movies a kid my age wasn't supposed to watch, and this was my first encounter with Jason, and it was wild. This movie will always have a special place in my heart.

chris, you are without a doubt the very best movie critic slash reviewer i have ever had the privilege to watch and hear your prospective. i love the fact that you really try to find the good points about every movie you review. some positivity is welcome in this shit world of everyone being so judgemental and critical. you at least try to have fun with an even bad movie and point out any kind of virtue that may or may not exist. please keep doing what your doing. iam a huge movie buff and get great happiness just seeing you talk about a subject that iam so passionate about.

When you said "you can wAtch this movie by yourself with a bunch of vodka"....I nearly choked on my lunch laughing!!! Best line in any of your reviews....ever! Keep up the great entertainment! As for the definitive Jason film....the one with the girl with telekinesis...if it hadn't had the studio interference....could have been the best one!

I'm glad to have caught this review. I know it's not a great film, let alone the definitive F13, but it's not too shabby and has some great material here and there, and overall is just a fun popcorn flick. Personally I would say Jason Lives is the closest we've ever gotten to a perfect F13 entry, especially since it can be watched in black and white and looks awesome that way (director's intent, I've heard, as an homage to classic horror). I also enjoyed seeing The Addams Family next to Jason X and your shirt was hilarious.

A guy I dated in college loved this franchise. He actually drew a doodle of Jason going to space---this was 1988! We've remained friends over the years, but we lived in different states when this movie came out. I don't think he saw it, but I remember telling him about my experience seeing it in the theaters with what seemed like folks who knew nothing about Jason or his "legend". This of course was quite the turnabout since I was not a horror fan at the time we dated, but I cudn't resist seeing my ex's doodle "come to life" years after he drew it. My first time seeing a Jason movie in the theater, n when 6:22 happened, I burst out laffing so loud that some folks way younger than me asked me why after the movie was over. For someone who grew up when Jason hit the scene, the awesome irony of watching Jason's basic, brutish yet tried n true methods of killing campers meet the inescapable advancement of future technology where everything is a constant, glib reset--n his subsequent increasing frustration n anger at this juxtaposition, so much that he's using one camper to throttle the other camper, while they giggle gleefully like it tickled--just brought me so much joy n remembrance of how unjaded n optimistic I was as a 20-something in comparison to the generations entering their 20s now. I mean, no COVID, Donald Trump was still an entitled buffoon but not a horrible yet meme-able US president, n ppl were watching a sitcom called "Friends" instead of pretending anonymous 010101s online were actual ones. It just shows u how things change (i.e., I'm quite the horror movie fan, while my ex-now-friend luvs cheesy disaster films), how change isn't a bad thing (exception: Trump actually being a US president) n yet some things remain the enduring institutions that sustains our youth, our curiosity n our happiness. Can't wait for Jason to become AI integrated! N may his pure unrelenting attachment to hockey masks n machetes never die!!! 😂

I have no fucks in my love for Jason X. Had arguably some the best kills in the Franchise. The cast was a hodgepodge of Goosebumps & Andromeda. (Deep Cut) David Chronenberg as a defense liason. Last but certainly not least. A remix of and old classic definitive kill in a "Hollo-Deck". Jason X may be the whipping boy in the franchise ( That's reserved for Pt: 5 IMO.) But this underrated gem needs to be reexamine. For me Jason X is a certified classic.

In every Friday 13th movie I've seen, I've found only two parts that aren't completely boring. The finale of the original Friday 13th (basically everything after the killer appears in person), and the entirety of Jason X. This may not be an objectively "good" movie, but man, it's one of the most fun experiences. And unlike most "so bad it's good" movies, you can watch it over and over and still be entertained from start to finish.
