I agree, it is perplexing but indoctrination is a powerful thing. Where you taught the fundamentals of logic and standards of evidence at primary and high school? I know I wasn't 30+ years ago so it isn't something that they've just recently stopped teaching, from my experience anyway. We had math, science, english, geography, music, physical education, technical drawing, wood/metal work, history and business studies. I think it is generally assumed that the parents teach their children about logic and standards of evidence as school is more practicality based. It definitely would be great, don't get me wrong, if logic and standards of evidence was part of the curriculum. Theism and religiosity would probably die out even quicker than it already is.

@@TheTruthKiwi Philosophy, and by extension, logic, was at one time a requirement for all first year university students but sadly with a greater emphasis on vocational training, more and more tertiary institutions are no longer considering this a fundamental component for an undergraduate degree. I was lucky. My degree is in design and my college required Philosophy as a core subject. Not only did I do Philosophy classes, I was able to do a course in the history of design philosophy. To me they were my favorite classes but it is amazing how many students were complaining because they could not see any value in discussing ideas, and critical thinking skills. The biggest complaints came from theists who seemed to regard it as an attack on their beliefs.

Dear caller, good job. You were a rare example of a believer who is willing to think. As such you will continue to mature past believing stuff that makes no sense or have no stable foundation. Belief is convenient and easy. It allows a person to no longer wonder, aka no longer work. You've arrived at a conclusion, and that gives you comfort. "Knowing" over pondering. Intelligent people "know" very little, but they always try to. I realized at a young age that very few question are answered as much as they just lead to more questions. Most conclusions are tentative. Unintelligent people "know" everything, and will loudly tell you so. Belief is just a bandaid over fear, when a better method is to eliminate fear and accept that reality will not always be comfortable. At least reduce abject fear down to anxiety or discomfort. Fear is a sad thing to live with. It is like a disease of childhood. Snakes under the bed type fear. Not being afraid of reality will negate the need for convenient yet unfounded conclusions and therefore beliefs. It will allow you the freedom think. It is liberating.

Then you can begin to tackle things like.. It does not always produce life, rather it can be difficult or impossible for some ppl to do so. What about the various malfunctions which can go wrong with the creation of life? Etc.. Which eventually confronts the believer with a mind fork. Which is.. are the ppl whom cannot give birth/die during birthing, or the children whom suffer abnormalities somehow inherently disliked by God? Or does it point out a lack of evidence regarding a God's existence? God meany? Or not there? Good conversation overall guys 👍

After 3 weeks in a row house Philly 1st grade Parochial school in 1965, they kicked me out & told my poor Devout Catholic mother that I was possessed by demons, & they were going to refer us to an exorcist. This was after being kicked out of 2 previous parochial schools after only a few weeks. Figured out later in life I am high functioning autistic ("Asperger's Syndrome), so I demonstrated some oddball behavior as a 6 year old that would lead their Medieval mindset to "diagnose" demon possession, like spinning in circles, flapping my arms, talking in "tongues" (I had my own vocabulary for everyday objects & would blurt them out randomly), not being able to sit still for longer than a few min's, not being able to listen to basic orders, not responding to discipline, being disrespectful to authority despite punishment, etc, etc. So yeah, the Catholic Church was still believing in demon possession as recently as 57 years ago, at least in my experience. In all fairness, the public schools weren't much better (at least my mother didn't follow thru w/the exorcist referral lol), they labeled me an "Unrepentant Sociopath", destined for a life of crime in a biker gang, tried to put me in the short bus class, fed me ritalin w/o my parent's consent, yata yata.

Wow Matt, you didn’t belittle the caller or lose your cool. The result was a productive conversation which likely caused the caller to at least _reexamine_ his reasons for believing. I wish that you would do more of this with callers, rather than just "blowing up" at them!

Why do exorcist pray in Latin? What proof is there that demons exist and they are fluent in Latin? LOL

Wow this was religion in a nutshell. The first part of this call was so open minded and real. It was every religious person finally thinking a different direction and for a split second realizing they are wrong followed by a lot of teachings and imprinting from crazy preacher men to reinforce the ideas and instill fear and doom into anyone thinking of leaving. The first 30 seconds I could feel the vulnerability but then it was a guarded fight. Hunkered down And blocking everything.

Im a pro-life atheist But also pro-contraception since contraception prevents unwanted pregnancies, it means less abortions will take place I dont get why some pro-life individuals are also against contraception (I do get that its religious doctrine , but when it comes to achieving your goals, it is self defeating to oppose contraception)
@jeffreylehman11592 жыл бұрын
@mariolis1000 Also, most pro lifers are adamantly against welfare support for children, as well as contraception. It is really a morally corrupt position that is only concerned about fetal life, not for the woman bearing the fetus.

That is a good way to put it ”If you cannot explain it, why are you attributing a explaination to it?”. Answer is simple. We as human needs to explain our reality and gods have become the go to explanations when we lack anything from reality.

Yup pretty much every isolated civilisation on earth has made up its own myths and legends regarding origins. It is human nature to make stuff up when we don't have all the facts.

While I agree with Matt mostly on this, there are a lot of people out there who profess belief in things that they have never been convinced of, they are simply following authority statements, childhood indoctrination, etc. They've never bothered to think about the actual beliefs at all. It really doesn't sound like Christian actually has a clue what he supposedly believes? It's all things that others have filled his head with, entirely without his consent.
@jamesm15802 жыл бұрын
If they "profess belief in things they have never been convinced of" then they don't actually believe, they just say they do. You have to be convinced, whether for good or bad reasons, in order to accept something as true. An example of a bad reason is never really examining the thing you believe.
@BitchspotBlog2 жыл бұрын

This is too painful to listen to. It’s like kids who have been told something and made to believe it’s true with no critical assessment. Even the simplest question that requires the shallowest thought stumps them. It’s very sad cos I can’t feel angry at them. Just sad!
