I am in my 50's - and in *_my_* lifetime words in my native language, English, have changed. I point this out, because my lifetime is roughly the same period of time from Jesus' death to the first written record of his words & deeds. Now factor in the fact that the first writing of Jesus' ministry were in a completely _different_ language than the one he would have spoken, there is even going to be _more_ lost in translation. Some words just flat out don't translate to other cultures and languages - you have to start "approximating" words OR adopt the original language. For example the Japanese word for computer is..... computer. It is extremely naive to think that were no mistakes. The caller refers to Bart Erhman several times - Bart tells of several instances where monks quite literally mis-translated texts or made notes that another monk erroneously wrote as part of the Gospel. Words that mean one thing to me, would have meant something entirely different to my Grandparents. The word, Gay, being one example. In England they use the word biscuit to indicate baked goods that Americans refer to as cookies, for us, "biscuit" has a totally different meaning. Even people with photographic memories can not reliably recite a speech they heard word for word - that is because we use a different portion of our brain to read than to listen. If someone speaks to 30 people, he or she will get 30 different renditions of what was said. I was a technical instructor for 16 years, and I am here to attest that in my experience people only retain 30% of what they hear in a single sitting. There was not just ONE story (oral tradition) for King Arthur or Robin Hood - different minstrels would add their own twist. I would like for the caller to take up Dan Barker's challenge to write an account of the Easter event using each of the 4 gospels harmoniously - and he can't leave out any portion from ANY gospel. Good luck. Language by it's very nature is imprecise, and is in constant motion - that's why things like the "urban dictionary" exist. travel back 150 years and use the word "cool" to indicate something that you find as "neat" - and see if they understand you. Buy yourself a Lexicon and Concordance and then use it while you read the new testament - - you will quickly discover how easily mistakes in translation can be (and were) made. There are many instances where a word can have two different meanings, and it was through context the listener knew the meaning of the words being used - - even harder to do with dead languages 2000 years later. If you hold that God enacted a miracle to cause those transcribing the Bible from Aramaic oral tradition to Greek and then to a generation of Greek writers 50 years later to keep everything word perfect, then please explain why there are over 1000 different denominations of Christianity (?) - and some of those are the direct result of a dispute concerning the meaning of a word or words in a verse of the New Testament. Who were the Anabaptists - what separated them from other Christians? Ask a Calvinist if we are saved by faith or works.... then ask a Baptist or Methodist. All read the SAME bible.... Why do different Bibles use different phrases and words? Why is the Catholic Bible different from the Protestant one? Isn't it possible for God to clearly state what he or she wants - yet each denomination of Christianity believes *_they and ONLY they_* have the *_correct_* interpretation.

Really well explained. I have one or two or ten years on you, and I think of, not only how different street slang is now, but even how we say and pronounce words, compared to my childhhod a little way before yours. Much of the New Testament was written or least re-written in Koine, the street patois for the Classical Greek of the time, developing as it was, in as equally changing world as ours has been. I imagine the language of the original books was not static, even before we get to the translations from which our own texts descend.

It isn't only a matter of a story changing through transmission. I've heard my wife tell the same story over the years at dinner, many, many times - often stories in which I am, myself a participant -- and every time she tells these stories, she tends to "improve them" -- the "fish" gets bigger with every telling. It's not that she's lying -- and heaven help me if I try to challenge her on these details because she will stick to the expanded and improved version of the story -- even as it continues to expand and improve over the years. And it's not just her -- there are things that I "remember" -- that I have found out later are absolutely not as I recall. This is one of those experiences that happen much more to people who grew up in the days before VCRs and streaming and all of that, because there are movies and TV shows that I saw and vividly remember when I was very young and never saw again for thirty, forty years or more. And when I finally managed to catch up with them again, I realized that my "memory" of those movies was completely wrong -- somehow or other, I had constructed something in my memory that was very different from what I had actually seen. The point is, because what I'd seen was preserved on film, I was able to compare my recollection to the objective recording. There's no way to do that with a recollection and a real-life event. But there's also no reason to believe that the correlation is any better. NMS
@Chris-hx3om8 ай бұрын
That's actually how memory works. You don't remember the event, what you remember is the last telling of it. Each time you 'remember' it, that's the new memory.

I think the real killer with regard to the whole oral tradition problem is simply that there's no mechanism to ensure the version that gets propagated most successfully will be the most accurate. Rather it's likely the version that gets propagated more will simply be the one that's most popular. And what achieves that popularity will vary according to the audience. The audience's preferences will change over time, and as the story crosses cultural barriers.

Yea, especially in a literate culture that also invented machines to help them remember anything crucial. I have no problem reciting certain poems I learned over 40 years ago with 100% accuracy. You seem to completely ignore this phenomenon. No wonder you fail to imagine how this could be different in largely illiterate cultures. Even to this day we have cultures in which several illiterate people have demonstrated to 100% accurately recall the entire text of the Koran as they were taught. Even people suffering from dementia to the degree they no longer recognize their own children can still be capable of 100% accurately reciting the children songs they learned as a child. Telling half a truth is often worse than telling a full lie. The fact that SOME people start to make things up because of your explanation doesn't mean this is the case in all instances as you seem to pretend. Failing to mention it's not necessarily as you claim in all instances seems indicative for your ego failing to admit you mind might possibly not be as bright as it thinks it is. And as such, your claim seems to be no better than the pot blaming the kettle. @@BlacksmithTWD "I have no problem reciting certain poems I learned over 40 years ago with 100% accuracy" I wonder what is the accuracy for the others poems you learned over 40years ago. And more importantly, how do you verify if is actually 100% accurate, and remember that if you use any sort of text to verify them, then the analogy fails, because the focus point of this conversation was that these oral stories were written years AFTER they supossedly were memorized. "Even to this day we have cultures in which several illiterate people have demonstrated to 100% accurately recall the entire text of the Koran as they were taught." Which doesnt make any sense, either you can memorize something because you can read it, or you cant memorize something because you cannot read it. At most you kicked the can saying that illiterate people memorize a text someone else read to them. "Even people suffering from dementia to the degree they no longer recognize their own children can still be capable of 100% accurately reciting the children songs they learned as a child." And how can we verify if they recall the song at 100% accuracy, remember that if you point out to a text the analogy fails. The fact that MOST people start to make things up when memory fails is a big enough problem to doubt the reliability of these stories we have nowadays. The other fact that we now have EXACTLY the same problem with EXACTLY the same book (with the many versions there are of the baibull) is even more troublesome for the reliability of the EXACTLY the same stories. Failing to understand that oral traditions, specialy from a culture so far away in time and that cannot be verified, are completely unreliable, is indicative for the failing of the apologetic ego that refuses to admit that this defense might possibly not be as bright as it thinks it is. As Shane said in the video, sometimes the correct answer is: 'I don't know', and if you dont know then there is no reason to make up special pleaded assumptions towards your favorite myth.

@@BlacksmithTWD "but on all instances it's the best source of information we have to think with" Nope, even in court where sources of information are vital, witness testimony is one of the weakest kind we have. And when is the only source we have, we just say it is completely unreliable because there is no way to verify if these testimonies are accurate at all. BTW, shifting 'memory as a tool to claim a story is reliable' with 'memory as a tool to think' is just a little clever example for 'bait and switch'

Here's why, The Creator of the world is omnipotent; to create the world or to destroy the world requires absolutely zero effort on the part of our Father. In fact, right this moment, everything can be taken away in an instance and there will be nothing and our existence can be wiped out without a trace. The level of power we are dealing with is at least infinite. So our Lord with infinite wisdom made the world and gave us free will: The freedom to reject divine grace or to accept divine grace. Our Lord's infinite wisdom determined that preserving free will is more important than preventing suffering in the world. If our Lord intervened every time a person did something wrong, the person would cease being free and would become a mindless servant, like AI in a game. Since a person has free will, when a person does something wrong, they are punished, because they have the freedom to choose what is right. Now when a mother punishes a child, they are limited by their finite power to maybe send their child to their room, or give them a lecture. When the judicial system punishes a criminal, they are limited by their finite power, to lock the person in prison or fine them with a fee. When the Almighty punishes us people, despite having infinite power, the worst that was done was perhaps Noah's flood? Wiping out all living things on earth and leaving a few to survive when it would have been just as easy to destroy the whole world? That was an act of mercy. What else are people complaining about, slavery and genocide? People do these things all the time without any divine influence. Stop complaining about past events and respect the all powerful. Who or what else are we going to respect, men who are clearly fallible or the impersonal laws of physics? All of us are given the possibility of salvation. It's a choice that we make. It's a choice all of us can make right now, accept the divine will or reject the divine will. Do any of us really think we can expect divine favours when all of our lives are spent doing what is wrong from the perspective of our Lord? How can we expect to pass a class if we never do any homework? Why are people so perplexed by the notions of punishment and reward? It is the basis of justice. With the possibility of eternal reward, there is also the possibility of eternal punishment. That is only just. Christ is the way, the truth and the life. Anyone who reads the sacred word and cares to sincerely understand will probably find the kingdom.

@@greenlake433 There can be no such thing as omnipotent. It is a flawed notion. Even William Lane Craig recognized this and thus replaced the notion of an "omnipotent god" with that of an "extremely powerful god". For example : if god is omnipotent he is indestructible. So he can't destroy himself. Therefore he's not omnipotent. Besides, he can't give us freewill and be omniscient at the same time.

If it knows what I'm eating for breakfast next week Monday, then I don't have the free will or choice regarding what I'm eating for breakfast next week Monday. My mother told me stories about my grandma who died 5 years before I was born. Many times her story changed slightly when she repeated a particular incident. My aunts had a different version of the same event. I have no reason to believe my mom didn't witness the event but her version compared to her sisters AND over years wasn't consistent. With the new testament we're talking about ancient people who were more superstitious than we are and illiterate. Someone told a story about Jesus, which was passed on to a traveling businessman who went home and told his wife. These weren't conversations at seminars with citations and credits to authors verifying authenticity. Wtf is the caller talking about?

Imagine having 50 years of stories passed around orally and any of them being correct in the end. The reason for oral history is because virtually everyone was illiterate. If I tell someone a story to a friend and he tells it to another friend in the span of one day the story WILL NOT be the same. So to assume that 50 years, or 18,250 days, of telling stories is accurate is ludicrous. And why would an all knowing god use a defective system to spread his so called perfect message? Young Earth creationists regard the Bible as a historically accurate, factually inerrant record of natural history. As Henry Morris, a leading Young Earth Creationist, explained it, "Christians who flirt with less-than-literal readings of biblical texts are also flirting with theological disaster." According to Morris, Christians must "either ... believe God's Word all the way, or not at all." Young Earth creationists consider the account of creation given in Genesis to be a factual record of the origin of the Earth and life, and that Bible-believing Christians must therefore regard Genesis 1-11 as historically accurate. “There’s no evidence...” 😂🤦♂️🙄 Sure there isn’t Champ, now go play in traffic. I feel like the math in the Bible is off. I may be wrong but doesn't the Bible go through like 9 generations of guys living to be between 500 and 1000 years old? Last time I read the Bible I added up the years in the section in Genesis where it goes "[person] lived to be x years old and had x children [before dying]" over and over again and it added up to be 9800 years or something. Feel free to fact check me on that but I remember the math being extremely incorrect on the supposed age of the universe. Edit: ok I just calculated the time from Adam to Noah to be 6524 years. Math isn't my strongest subject so feel free to check back over me but what I did was basically go to any line in Genesis Chapter 5 (KJV) where it says "And all the days that [person] lived were x years; and he died." I added up the ages of all the men mentioned in those lines. Then I subtracted the years in lines that read "And [person] lived (x) years and begat [son]" because the son is the next person. Like I said I'm not the best at math so please check back over me but if the age of the Earth is even 1 year more than 6000 then any claim that it is no older than 6000 years is wrong according to the book claiming such. By virtue I would also say this brings into question the whole of the Bible because if the math of God or the math inspired by the word of God is wrong then what would that say about Yahweh?

Therefore, we can only make educated guesses for the accuracy to the originals the manuscripts we have found have.

@@aaronfranklin6863 I don't mean to be a *skeptic*. haha Anyway, do you know the history and especially the origins story of that superstition? When were the original sacred songs created, the sacred sites built, and the idea of procuring a curse from a spirit for singing a sacred song song imperfectly come about? If the idea of procuring a curse from a spirit for singing a sacred song inaccurately came about after the original songs were created but before the sacred sites were built and further the idea of spiritual punishment in connection to these sites came about, then there's less guarantee of the broader audience of this oral tradition remembering the originals perfectly. Also, depending on how long ago the songs were created, it's more probable that even a more narrow audience doesn't remember them perfectly either, especially if there was no superstition of spiritual punishment for not singing them perfectly between the origination of the songs and the building of these sacred sites. Just look at modern Christian hymns and Christmas carols. We do have written text of the originals but for each hymn and carol we also have a handful or more alternatives and translations.

@davidburroughs22443 жыл бұрын
Nope. Several examples exist of stories changing over time. Actors are famous for the variety as well as the quality of their interpretations of the very same dramatic works. And that is usually speaking each word of the work over and over again. Ask about their lesser behind the scenes stories and it becomes even more clear.

Matt, more importantly, most spectators would have only heard the sermon on the mount once. What would be the odds of them remembering it accurately? Even if they heard it more than once could they repeat it word for word. The scene in Life Of Brian where they are listening to the sermon on the mount would be, apart from hilarious, reasonably true. The crowd would be whispering to each other. The people at the back wouldn't hear it all.

"Blessed are the cheesemakers!" (as misheard by the reverend Monty Python.) ALSO: the reluctance of the caller to listen to "potty mouth" Matt is one of the reasons stories change from person to person! The non-potty-mouth dude repeating the WORD from a potty-mouth-dude will inevitably change those potty words to their convenience and therefore change meaning. ALSO ALSO: I would say that if Mr. Jesus gave the Mounted Sermon multiple times it just provides multiple more times that the listeners could get it differently. (Nobody who give the same speech twice gives it verbatim, identical or the same way.)
@akl5614 жыл бұрын
I watched this to about 10 minutes in where the argument about how many times the sermon on the mount was preached began. Does this guy seriously want me to believe in a creator of the universe on the basis of his opinion of many times a sermon was preached? Think about it. Jesus is pretty irrelevant if he wasn't the son of the creator god and/or the creator. Couldn't the creator of the universe do a slightly better job of communicating to the beings he supposedly loves? Hey! Continued to watch and that was Matt's point!
