First of all, I enjoy your channel very much. I know I am going to see a woman who has done a tremendous amount of self examination and reflection, and is on a journey of being and becoming the best version of herself. Bravo to you, Christina. You are the real deal. I have thought about my personal style, how clothes fit me now after surviving breast cancer and adjusting to a mastectomy and reconstruction. I feel great in my clothes especially with my new body. I am still that person who loves to wear a beautiful feminine blouse, yet, loves her casual outdoorsy wear of jeans and a smart looking tee shirt, plus a layer of a button down type shirt or an LL Bean barn coat. This is how I feel like myself. I choose my clothes for my lifestyle. I live in southeast Michigan, I love exploring the Great Lakes, Oh, Canada, and being outdoors watching and photographing birds and wildlife. I resist the barrage of bloggers messaging - you must wear this or buy that to be stylish. I just go back to my roots of that teenage girl with her first few paychecks, and thoughtfully buying that one very cherished pretty tee shirt and a dressy top and creating my first capsule wardrobe. A three piece capsule of a nice pair of slacks and two coordinating tops. Simple and stylish is the way to go. As they say - Less is More. Less does mean more - more happiness, less confusion and less chaos, and more self love.

I found my personal style through making capsule wardrobes. I chose something like 10 shirts, 5 bottoms, 5 dressier pieces, 3 necklaces, etc etc at a time, and kept the rest in storage. The constrained choice basically forced me to rotate through everything, and that made it easier to figure out what I wasn't inclined to wear! And then I'd swap stuff out until I was left with items that I genuinely loved using. It literally changed my entire relationship with clothes

Piggy backing off your restaurant analogy, as a former chef I know that the bigger a restaurant's offering, the less fresh everything will be. Many things will come from the freezer. I think the same can apply to clothes, having less means you use what you have more (wash, wear, airing out) and things don't lurk unused and unloved in the shadows!!

Just need to share. You're young & stylish and can mix & match your neutrals well. I'm 50 & now divorced & I don't mix & match too well. I live in Tennessee where it's hot 9 months of the year. I wear dresses all the time cause they're easy & breezy. I add jackets & tights in winter. I just counted, & I have 48 dresses after decluttering. I love them because I don't have to think about anything other than, bag, shoes & jewelry. Boom, done. I do own jeans, lots... indigo, black, grey, olive & a burgundy corduroy. I have about 25 tops... tees, blouses & sweaters to match my jeans and 2 pairs black trousers. I think you put tons of effort into defining your style and it shows. You consistently look good & put together. I think I look my best in dresses. That's my style. Some were $29 & some were $250, & they range from casual to formal but I feel good in them & I don't spend much time in the morning debating them. So I appreciate you encouraging women to track what they wear, & then wear the style which makes them feel confident, comfortable, and attractive. 🙂

Clothing has always been an easy area for me to keep under control. 1. I figured out my personal style by 20. I deviated from it from time to time, but always returned to it. I know that classic pieces & classic fits look best on me. Think blazers, slacks, pencil skirts and shift dresses. My favorite pictures of myself for 20+ years are always classic looks. 2. I have never enjoyed shopping and only ever went into stores when I needed something. This has probably saved me a small fortune. 3. I have never paid attention to trends or watch what was on the runways. I feel no pull to this at all. 4. I am not an accessories person. I don't own jewelry and do not understand the allure of designer (ie stupidly overpriced for no good reason) handbags. I also don't like logos or names on my clothing/accessories. 5. I like vintage items so I enjoy thrifting select pieces that give a unique twist to my otherwise classic (boring, to some) wardrobe. I have a vintage high neck, puff sleeve blouse in dark green from the 80's, a button up with an awesome disco color from the 70's, an amazing dress from the 1960's, a vintage leather jacket from the 90's and vintage Italian leather loafers. These pieces keep me from getting bored with my basics. 6. I started utilizing a capsule wardrobe in 2005, so I have always looked to have a small core wardrobe. 7. Finally, I have practiced 1 in/1 out for a very long time. These things have kept my closet from growing and kept me on track with my personal style.

I'm a lot like you, except for the accessories. I love getting earrings when I'm on vacation or doing something I enjoy as a souvenir or reminder of an enjoyable time. One on my favorite pairs of earrings my husband bought for me at a gas station during a snow storm 😊. I also have a lot of scarves because I find them versatile and so fun! But in general, I hate shopping for clothes. I like thrift shopping because I never pay more than $20 for any individual item and that seems like a reasonable cost per wear for clothing to me.

The other thing to remember with that constant urge to shop is that we're seeing a dopamine hit from a novel experience. It's called the hedonic treadmill. That's why we constantly check social media or buy new things. Novelty releases dopamine. So that's a huge part of why we buy stuff, put it in the closet, and forget about it.

A few things hit home with me in this video! - *Your most worn stuff often doesn't end up being your favourite stuff (and that's not failure) *Find out what it is you actually want from your personal style *Explore the shopping choices you've already made, give them a real chance How I'm working on defining my personal style - -Tracking my daily wears in a spreadsheet -Logging selfies of my favourite outfits in a wardrobe app. This is actually SO helpful for learning what I absolutely do NOT like. Who knew just looking in the mirror vs taking a photo of yourself, could be so different!? This is also building confidence because I have a backlog of images of myself lookin' chic, to boost me when I need! Sounds cheesy, but works!

Honestly I did find my personal style by shopping but it was thrifting/thredUP type sites that were what made it. Being able to look at a bunch of clothes without fancy product shots/lighting/the fantasy of it all were really what did it for me and then also digging back into things that I liked and was drawn to as a kid but considering how to pair those things together into outfits. Going back to the least influenced time in my life and thinking about what I liked was probably the most helpful thing. Also thinking about the silhouettes of my favorite items and how to work those into outfits. So creating a capsule wardrobe of my personal basics and then looking at my other items and seeing how those items could tie in with that capsule. If things don’t pair with my most worn capsule items I’m probably not going to wear them you know?

I love that! It's SUCH an interesting perspective to see the clothes for what they are, not when they look their "idealized best" on the models. Im taking that insight with me moving forward as a reminder. thank you!

I’ve lost 60 pounds recently, so have been forced to declutter A LOT. I had way too many clothes from trying to compensate for feeling bad about myself. Getting rid of all the stuff has been emotional. Some of it I realized I didn’t even like. My closet has much less now and I’m hoping I can control my impulses and keep it that way.

Thank you, Christina, for sharing your journey. Even though I am in midlife I find your channel relevant and inspiring. I have been on a wardrobe minimizing journey for a few years. It takes time and patience, but being authentic and honing one’s true style only adds to the unique beauty we each possess. After years of impulsive, fantasy self shopping I have turned a corner. Less really is more, and it took me until midlife to realize this. Decision fatigue was my trigger. Oh - & the glorious epiphany after age 50 that I just didn’t give a flying f**k about what others thought. So soon old, so late wise….🤣

I think that what your decluttering and finding minimalism did was mature you far beyond your years with regard to fashion trends and many other things. I continued to look to fashion for self-definition into my early 50s (especially after finally losing the weight I’d carried since my daughter was born - she’s in her 40s now). It took getting into my mid-to late 50s to finally move past “what I look like” to “what and who I am” to move out of fashion trends. You beat me by a couple of decades or so! Bravo! ❤️

I have found that as I’ve whittled down my closet and targeted my style more and more, I “feel” like my closet is bigger. I wear a greater percentage of it and can get more creativity since the pieces that are left are the ones’s I enjoy wearing and work for me (my life, body, preferences).

Thank you, this video hit home! I often find myself wanting to shop for clothes/revamp my style when my confidence is low. And then (surprise surprise!), I buy the new clothes, "feel cool" the first few times I wear them, and then realize they are not me (i.e., not comfortable, or what you said in the video "like I try too hard"). Clearly the problem isn't my wardrobe but in my head. I love what you said at the end thay we just need to accept ourselves and our wardrobes, simple and beatiful ❤️

I feel like personal style can be so elusive! For years I've been trying to cultivate a "style" but your comment about what we wear IS our style feels so true. I will say - definitely wish I did some tracking and soul searching before all that decluttering! I think I put too much attention into culling things that I went a little overboard and I find myself missing clothes I've donated! Wish I had put together a spreadsheet back then, but it's all about finding a balance

Wow, this is great. The fantasy self piece is really resonant to me right now, especially because my life continues to change, my career evolves, and I think I'm really struggling to accept that the me that likes to wear comfy cozy work-from-home clothes a lot is not the person who used to wear fabulous costume-like outfits everyday. It feels like a failure to not be the extravagant version of myself that I imagine, but hearing you talk about your experience and your journey with tracking things was really resonant. I also would love to explore how laundering and caring for clothes factors in...

Hi Christina, I recently discovered your channel and I have to say, you are an absolute breath of fresh air. I totally relate to what you're saying. It took me 28 years to understand what my personal style is, and to really accept that I am very very minimalist when it comes to dressing. It took me this long to discover basics in neutral colours to mix and match. I spent my early to mid 20s trying to make bright colours, florals and dresses work when I have a muted colour palette and all I really wanted was a simple top and jeans or black trousers. I spent my early corporate career feeling so uncomfortable in public and with such low self esteem. Thanks for making these videos and spreading this message. You've got a new subscriber in me :)

I have found my style and own items that fit the style template. I agree that get lost with the so many items in my closet that do not fit my style. I am overwhelmed at times. In my defense, I bought many of these clothes when my preferred styles were not available like High waist bottoms and looser, non form fitting tops. You’ve inspired me to pull out all those item and begin to let them go. Nice pieces like cashmere and other natural fibers kept me bound to them but I need the space in my closet and piece of mind. I’m doing it!

Thanks for the positive video! I've gotten so much out of reworking my wardrobe this year and have found it therapeutic and a creative outlet. I've also loved growing in my own ways more minimalist or a word I maybe like even more for it is "intentional." This video inspires me to try on all my clothes in front of a full-length mirror and take photos of the outfits! Also posting in style or color related FB groups for feedback or getting friends or family feedback can be fun. Sometimes outfits can be worn different ways to try out different lines too like my rolling up sleeves, buttoning shirts more or less, tucking things in or not, cuffing pants, different shoes, etc. Can take photos of the different versions.

Actually listening to your last few video's, I've thought about several of the thing's you mentioned. Cleared out item's that weren't being worn, and gave them away. Sad to say, I bought stuff other people had in their "capsule/minimalist" wardrobes that definitely weren't what made me feel my best: those are mostly gone. I didn’t need to shop to figure out my personal style, but now that I’ve figured it out, I realized I have A LOT of gaps in my wardrobe. My closet was either practical or trend driven and I never paid much heed to core basics and staples that created substance in my closet. I’m now on the hunt to fill those gaps so I do need to shop, but it’s been fun trying to find the things I want second hand first before diving into all things brand new.

Now that I'm in my 30s, I finally fell free to dress exactly the way I want without being afraid of judgment. Also, I work at a music school. So I got rid of denim, high heels and anything that feels uncomfortable. My personal style draws a lot from fantasy and literature in a kind of urban/casual way, you know? I figured it out through months of curating my wardrobe (which have been minimal for years now, but never felt quite right) and investigating what I wanted to communicate by dressing

Currently I'm 48 years, so I'm still preserving tops and bottoms since year 2000! A very fine high cost tops and bottoms, like the year 95 croooed blazer BCBG,. Max Azria JCrew shirts and jackets, as well as cotas, most of them I preserve those pieces in patters that I don't use, cause I didn't like them, since the 90's, so this fashion trends, turned in halloween disguise, like my black prom dress

I have been shopping impulsivity or addictively for decades...I've got into huge debt many times...I have thousands of items of clothing. I have stopped doing this now as I'm 60, and realized it doesn't make you happy or fill a void. I know what I like to wear and I do have a fantasy self but at 60 that is difficult to go with as my body dictates what I can wear ....my heels are just no longer practical ....I still can't get rid of my stuff....I have moved on tons of stuff but need to do more. I don't want to waste my precious life on pieces of material....I just want peace and to look put together and elegant. I have so much stuff I like so can't get rid of it but watching these pod casts makes me think I should but at 60 I have decided the items all have space in various closets I spent my money on them so they can stay for now. I hate waste though and wish the clothes could be on someone's back rather than hanging in a cupboard

Since covid it's even harder to declutter. I work at home permanently mostly using loungewear. What I'm trying to do to declutter is asking myself am I excited to wear this again? If the answer is no I declutter the items. I still shop but now I'm trying to do it with full awareness instead of just because I want to shop. Letting my fantasy self is harder than I thought, I'm still struggling to dress just as me rather than a fantasy.

And I dont want to focus on having less all the time, because I regretted what I decluttered. I cant do this because I like different things on different days, so one day I might declutter something I will regret the next day. So im finding my balance

i think i cant find my personal style because i am not sure which person i am... kinda. i am 31 now. becoming a mom at 26 changed my perspective of who i am a lot. then i stepped out of a 6yr toxic relationship in january and am now a single mom. this again changed who i am. i dont really know who i am and i when "my person" changes, my style changes with it. also sometimes i think i really love an outfit in the mirror and am totally happy, later i see a photo of it and feel like breaking down because i doesnt looked like i thought and i felt like i looked awful. and then i get into a style crisis again. and then i buy a lot.... well. yeah. this was a so chaotic answer like i feel chaotic inside-... i buy clothes for my fantasy self a lot and then struggle with those nice wool coats when i ride my bike everyday in every weather, work at the playground in the kindergarden and play outside with my daughter. i feel like i should chose really practical clothing because of my job and i live in germany at the coast, its cold and rainy in spring/autumn/winter. and then i need thousand things because of the weather. i have plenty of coats and jackets, for like EVERY weather between -5 and +30 degrees, all of it in rainy/sunny/cloudy/windy options...

I've struggled with the same confusion about my sense of self recently, too. That seems to happen with a lot of significant life changes. I'm sorry you're struggling and wish you the best of luck!

I've decluttered alot last month. Letting go of my clothes that are almost 10 yrs old. Still love them but they are not my style anymore. Im almost 30 and i find those clothes look silly on me at my age now.

Ok I must be the worst person of all your subscribers when it comes to decluttering. Two days ago our coat rack fell off the wall because it had too many coats on it. While going through them I found two gorgeous identical jackets, tags still on. They fit me, I love them and I didn’t know I had them. Sad! Time to declutter!

So the main style personalities are: Classic, Elegant, Natural, Dramatic, Feminine, Sexy and Creative. Would you consider yourself any of these, or a combination of them?

Many people go by what Kitchener for example says that the main female style essences are: Classic, Natural, Dramatic, Romantic, Ingenue (Girly), Gamine (Tomboy), Ethereal (Angelic). Though other systems like Kibbe leave out Ingenue and Ethereal.

I used to feel declittering meant getting rid of anything I hadn’t worn recently - but lately I’ve tried to let myself rediscover some pieces that I might have overlooked when I was constantly bringing in new. Some of those pieces like you said “never stood a chance” simply because of the amount I was bringing in. Thanks for sharing - I have been loving the tone and style of your recent videos.

As a impulsive clothes shopaholic I've recently got onto the habit of choosing a large "capsule wardrobe" each season with clothes I already have. I choose what excites me the most and everything else goes into storage for next time. Anything I simply dislike or no longer feels like me anymore gets put onto eBay or given away.

I have a pretty simple wardrobe. Here’s how I don’t get bored ✨
