Love the enthusiasm miss madam has for the hunt! Will be taking my girl out for her first hunt this winter, if she turns into anything like Laragh I’ll be bailing 😂 The issue with bitting up to a waterford is that eventually the horse gets used to the new force being applied and is able to power thru it, needing another stronger bit - until there’s no stronger bit to go up to and the horse will run through anything. My (unsolicited 🙈) advice is to keep the waterford to hunts and use the jr cowhorse (WITH a curb chain!) for regular events so she doesn’t get too used to the waterford and you can bit up or down depending on what you’re doing. I used to love cleaning tack but I always took my bridle to pieces, washed in warm water and then used saddle soap, not too much in the seat area cos I didn't have sticky bum breeches in those days. I think you and Justine should have a bit discussion, explaining the difference with poll pressures etc. Waterford are a great bit for strong horses, don't really like Dutch gags but they are very much a modern thing! Laragh just loves being a hunter, doesn't she? Could gallop for days (I think you said she's a decent chunk TB?). It's lovely listening to her high-blowing. When I was a child, I always wanted a high-blower and none of my horses have been. I wonder if Ember would enjoy hunting (although I don't suppose it's under consideration presently, given your efforts to calm his cross-country enthusiasm a little) or whether it would remind him of the racing he was tired of. I quite like cleaning tack, personally - used to bring it home and do it whilst watching telly in the evening. Rob seems like a genuinely sweet man and I am happy for you!

Happy New Year! Laragh really loves the hunt and dogs, doesn't she? Though I think she likes whipping so she can be up at the front 😁 Keys - if you have an iPhone, get an AirTag. I'm absolutely paranoid about losing my keys or wallet in the woods on dog walks (I drive there so have to take keys/license/etc.) so I have a tag on the keys and another stuffed in my wallet. One on my dog's collar too!

You would need to check with your local hunt but normally you would need to be accompanied by an adult if under 16 unless known to be competent.

This hunt is a hunt using blood hounds so it’s a proper trail hunt using a fake scent unlike the fox hound packs who say they are trail hunting when in fact they are still killing foxes for fun .
