I just wanted to thank you for this great video! You saved me over 1500$ on repair costs. I removed the old and ordered a new Turbo core like in the video the part only cost me 120$. I even ended up doing all the work by myself and fixing my car for 10 times less the cost a dealer would have charged.

Once again, I've just watched a video on something I knew nothing about and never planned to repair, but apparently you can make anything look interesting! 😆 I wish I had a quarter of your mechanical knowledge/ abilities! 👍

I've never seen it mentioned but have noticed that the circle grip holes are usually not parallel, ie if you hold one up to the light one side has a slightly smaller hole than the other, the smaller hole goes outwards so that the holes get wider the more they go in. In this way the tips of the pliers tend to be pulled in rather than out. I guess the grip holes are formed with tapered tooling of some kind.

Excellent, I did not know that. I have usually avoided turbo cars because of the price of turbos. I have always rebuilt things like brake calipers.
@christopher_barr5 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew, the new core was 49 GBP (60 USD), so this is a big saving compared to a new or reconditioned turbo. Cheers, Chris 👍

Hi Chris, I love your videos, they're so comprehensive. They answer all my questions but one. If you had a bad Turbocharger, would it be worth it to buy just the Cartridge or the whole Turbocharger with all the components needed, refurbished to exchange or renew the Turbocharger....?
@dogmaw13643 жыл бұрын
Very good video. I’m considering rebuilding my turbo but have read that it needs balancing after or it wouldn’t last long. Do you know if this is correct
@DavesDiscoveriesChannel Жыл бұрын
Top tip.. fill the CHRA with oil via the feed hole and leave it a few hours while gravity does it’s thing.
@EWA20234 жыл бұрын
Hi mate great video thanks, one question is don't they need to be balanced after fitting a new core, thinking of doing this myself but unsure if after paying to have it fitted again I might come across more problems, I had a cheap Chinese turbo fitted recently cost me £200 labour & the turbo went after couple of hours
@christopher_barr4 жыл бұрын
Hi Adrian, the new cores are balanced so that’s not a problem but there is a procedure to follow to prime any replacement (or refurbished) turbo with oil. You may find on your car that your two turbos failed for the same reason - for example of the oil supply line to the turbo is blocked then even an expensive OEM turbo would get destroyed very quickly. You need this cause investigated and fixed before you throw any more money away. Good luck with it! Chris

@christopher_barr5 жыл бұрын
It sounds like your turbo is on its way out. It may be sticking intermittently. If you replace the core make sure that the new one is getting the lubrication it needs to avoid this happening again. Cheers, Chris 👍

@@christopher_barr so should I not buy a new turbo just a rebuild kit ?
@christopher_barr5 жыл бұрын
That’s what I would do yes - you can save quite a bit of money by just replacing the core. You can do the whole job yourself or a half way house is to pay a mechanic to remove the turbo, give it to you for a day (for you to replace the core, which you buy before hand) and then refit the turbo for you.
@levro73675 жыл бұрын
@@christopher_barr would you say replacing the core is a manageable job for a 18 with little car experience
@christopher_barr5 жыл бұрын
LevroJr davies Yes this is a good job for you to get stuck in to. Getting the turbo on and off can be a pain depending on the car, but if it looks too complicated for you then you can get a mechanic to do that for you and give you the turbo for a day so you can replace the core yourself. I’d say go for it, the best way to learn anything is by doing it. 👍

@christopher_barr4 жыл бұрын
Hi Bob, I replaced the “CHRA” or “core” of the turbo. These are brand new and are the parts which get changed when you buy a refurbished turbo. Check the link in the description for an example of where you can buy them. Chris 👍

Hiya Chris, great video and it could well be a huge help to me repairing my VW T4 camper. I have found a supplier for the core cartridge (turbo rebuild l t d) the one I need is £132 inc vat. I see people selling complete refurbished turbos or new cheap ones for less. Do you think it is worth doing? My old turbo didn't make any loud siren like noises but does have play in it and there was oil in the intercooler charge hoses etc. How wobberly can they be as I believe the bearing rides on a bed of oil and sort of firms up the slack!

@christopher_barr4 жыл бұрын
Cores will fit multiple turbos but that doesn’t mean they are all the same. You have to check that the core you buy fits your turbo but some googling should reveal the answer quite easily for you. Cheers, Chris
