Christy Moore & Shane McGowan of the pogues on Ireland's Late Late show with Gay Byrne. Performance of SPANCILL HILL....chilling.

Shane touches your heart..his voice is full of a life lived, loneliness, home-sickness and how we all feel when we're "many miles from Spancil Hill"(wherever your personal Spancil Hill is)..so being in tune doesn't matter..he is unique

Shane sings this like the ghost of the composer...it is so eerie and other-worldly. Paired with the smooth melodic tones of Christy, it is a lovely thing to behold.

I´m sorry to hear that. Your dad sounded like a salt of the Earth character. As time passes fewer and fewer of those sort of people are around. I feel lucky that I grew up in the 70´s and 80´s when these men and women were still in our society. I felt much safer then than I do now.

I've been living in England for years, a few months ago myself and my partner were discussing moving back to Ireland. Obviously, we had both left family friends and a plethora of social connections and home comforts that we miss. Worrying about the Jobs and opportunities we would find when we moved back we found ourself in a melancholic and wistful place. Anyway, I had just finished a meeting and walked my client to the bus stop. A homeless busker sat down and sang this beautifully whilst accompanying himself on the guitar. He too was Irish, as he sang memories came flooding back of those little moments, interactions and Irish-isms that I miss. My eyes filled with tears and I excused myself leaving my client confused. Anytime I hear this song I'm filled with that memory and other, the power of music to transport you to different places. Still, haven't moved back but I have this song.

You won't find this version on any CD I'm afraid. It was recorded in the early 90's as a special on a Irish channel called RTE in tribute to Christy Moore. Shane was a guest, as was members of the Hothouse Flowers, other musicians in this video. It was rehearsed, but the bare minimum. Everyone in this video nailed it. There was no glitches, no problems no worries. Everyone on top of their game. I watched it live at the time, this was a highlight of the programme. It stayed with me ever since.

Spancil hill is in the County Clare (its a long long way from here to there) - this song is about Irish Emigration and was originally written in the Mid 19th Century - probably around the time of the Great Potatoe Famine (An Mhor Gort) - this is the Best rendition of the song by two great Irish Legends.

I drove to spancill hill one time and saw all the landmarks refered to here. All the people mentioned in this song are real as well!! Clare is a great county, irish culture is so strong there. Hurling, music, language. Eventhough I had to emigrate, at least I'll get to return. Shocking sad.

The Irish have given the World so much it is taken completely for granted. It their humility. For such a small island. Art, music, boxers, business, trade, presidents, they preserved the bible through the dark times or it wouldn't exist today. They have done it all and more and all about giving to their fellow man. I first heard this song in Sligo, Ireland in a small pub which was sort of a kip, and not frequented by tourists. I wandered in and sat at the wreck of a bar, where a lad was playing guitar and singing 9right at the bar, on a stool. A young woman asked him to play this song. An extra note, for those who do not know, Sligo is the town where the Fureys owned a bar called (surprise) Fureys. I thought what an odd name for an Irish bar. I had no idea who the Fureys were, but later found out that they were famous. Years later I bought one of their old albums out in Doolin (West coast of Ireland ) in a tiny record shop which is still there.
