I feel for Tite Kubo reducing the amount of background was an artistic choice, in an interview he mentioned himself how the background tends to take away the attention of the character he draws so he decided to minimize it, his health problems probably also played a role but a ton of misinformation was spread around the time the series ended by a certain youtuber that made its way into various forums and articles as facts even though they were disproved by later statements by the author so i just take what the mangaka says instead since the end result showed that around that time his character design got more mature n more serious to look at

I think that the best spot for his style was during the Shinigami arc and early Arrancar arc art-wise (that is never shown in the video, neither super early stuff or super late stuff). Early on (in the first arc) character design wasn't still fully blossomed and the characters were too goofy, but then the series becomes a slideshow of super-cool character design and memorable art pieces... up to the last 7 years or so, then started going down quality wise.
@DeathXtremeHaseo

I actually prefer Kubo's later stuff over his early art. Part of it is cause I suck at backgrounds and heavily focus on character design (I've made so much OC's for a manga project I wanna do and probably 70% of them are not going anywhere), but I also love simple scenery and high contrast scenes which Kubo is excellent at. Kubo is always the first artist I think of for inspiration along with Yusuke Murata, Sui Ishida and Hiro Mashima. Would love to see a react to Hiro Mashima too, his evolution from Rave Master to his latest work Edens Zero is impressive.

@Shaman Xeed bigger eyes, skinny af chars, sometimes looking like OP proportions is better? I get what you mean in that most females are the same body shape, facial structure but theres a difference between an art style being better cause of just plain improvement and because it is unique. RM is unique but not the type of art I wanna see or even emulate. You need to strike a balance between unique and generic, which FT and EZ I feel do. I dont agree with Hiro rehashing charas tho, thats kinda lazy and a great source of your problems I gather too.
@OsSas3
@OsSas3 4 жыл бұрын
@Shaman Xeed Fuck no. I heard Rave Master is a great manga but I couldn't start that cause of the art. It was so bland for me. In the other hand, FT could be a dumb/wated manga, but the art keep me going till I finished the series (thing which I regret) but the art was NEVER a problem.

Bleach's art is arguably better at the end, it's a matter of opinion, but the action panels weren't as good/interesting. Earlier Bleach had a lot more energy to it, if by the end it had that with the refined art, Bleach would have been great.

As someone who read a lot of mangas over the 30+ years, I felt that manga industry seems to have less of the *standard* artstyle than Western comic. In general, I felt that art styles are more varied from artists to artists at least in the Shounen (teenage boys) genre. Seinen (adult men) genre would have more realistic artstyle as their stories had more mature theme and issues as well as adult target audience.
@ThePreciseClimber
@ThePreciseClimber 4 жыл бұрын
What I like about manga the most is that each series is much more personal than in the western comics. In the manga industry the writers/artists own the characters they create. In the west the company owns the characters. Spider-man is Marvel's property. But someone like Son Goku is Akira Toriyama's property.
@Blue_Lunacy
@Blue_Lunacy 4 жыл бұрын
@Conrad Kujur I would argue that with Shounen manga, it would depend on which one you read. There are some that are more grounded and realistic than the others. One Piece and Naruto, straight up fantasy. And then there are One Punch-Man and My Hero Academia that move the superhero genre forward beyond the point that I felt Western superhero still stuck in. Then you have Act-Age, Assassin Classroom, Shokugeki no Soma, Deathnote, Bakuman, Platinum End, and all the works of Fujita Kazuhiro, that were all set in contemporary Japan. Especially, Deathnote, which struck a chord internationally.

@LincolnDWard

I think that "standard" art-style in "the West" is really just American superhero comics from Marvel and DC. There are plenty of unique art styles outside of the big 2, but those two publishers are so popular that they're what most people think of when they think of Western comics.

I don't want to rant on too long but each phase of Kubo' art has something about it that I find charming. The beginning of Bleach really feels like a passion project. Something Kubo was doing and was having a lot of fun with. It was expressive and visually stunning, evoking so much emotion from the characters themselves. It was definitely his 90's artstyle that was peeking through. The Arrancar arc to me felt like it was now becoming something a lot more mature, reflected in it's more modern artstyle. It's sharp and angular and there was so much edge to it. The character designs had heaps of flowing parts which looked cool when dramatically splayed on the page. This finalized during the fullbring arc where Kubo's art had matured the most and became the standard, only to decline along side his health when he hit the 1000 year blood war arc.

shadikal12345 you explained it pretty well! I think Kubo is the very few artist I’ve seen who’s art really change/developed and so people either are very hard/judgmental on him but I totally agree with you! With the blood arc it’s still visually pleasing but it doesn’t have that spark he used to have but with his health/stress and pressure on him I can’t blame him

Haruko Ichikawa in one of these Videos ? Seems like my prayers have been answered :D I agree, her Covers are really nice and unique, I also just really love her artstyle in General, in a way her Drawings almost never contain too much detail of any kind, but all the stuff that is there and the way it is textured gives her Art some Expressions i dont think many other Artists ever really express in their Art ? Her Character Designs are also very interesting, as she manages to give all of them some unique personal flair despite the uniformality a lot of them share, which usually is a rather difficult thing to do, the only other Example of this i can think of is Attack on Titan, but sometimes if you look at some of the Human Characters there, they sometimes can look a bit too similar still. So i think that is definetley also something that Haruko's artwork should be praised for.

This series gives me so much joy to watch 💕 As for a recommendation, can you check out CLAMP, a group of female mangakas who made classics like Clover, Cardcaptor Sakura, Tsubasa Chronicle,...? They’re known for old school 2000s shoujo-esque manga style with big eyes and frills and flowers. I especially love how they design characters with a signature flow(-y hair), distinct fashion and looong limbs. My personal favorite has to be the manga xxxHolic, so many times I find myself entranced by its beautiful but slightly unsettling illustrations. Some of my recs: *Cardcaptor Sakura* Tarot cards: - ccsakura.fandom.com/wiki/Clow_Cards - ccsakura.fandom.com/wiki/Clear_Cards Illustrations: ccsakura.fandom.com/wiki/Cardcaptor_Sakura:_Illustrations_Collection_-_Clow_Cards_(artbook) *xxxHolic* - google xxxHolic with best art or illustrations or manga or just by itself. I promise it’s worth checking out

The later panels you spoke of in Bleach were scenes in Hueco Mundo, a vast blank space of sand dunes and grey sky. Yeah, but remember that Kubo chose to create a setting for his story that was devoid of detail for a reason. Just like how in DBZ, Toriyama said he would have characters deliberately leave the city and fight in the wilderness because he didn't want to have to draw buildings on every page, and even came up with Super Saiyan because he didn't like having to fill in the character's hair with black. FWIW I think Kubo is a good artist who picked the wrong profession. He should have been a character designer / art director for video games.

Tbh I kind of liked the style shift, the minimalistic backgrounds in the later parts of the story and the shift in expression don't show a decline in quality, it's just a shift in style. If you look at any Manga ka with a fairly long-running story (Ruroken, One piece, etc) you will definitely notice a change in style. overall, like the direction that his art took. Personally, I like that the character's expressions became subtler rather than obvious, I feel it adds depth rather than scream what the character is thinking. Art and comics/manga are at heart subjective but I feel it's wrong to say that his art got worse by the end of the series. But on the same note, this is coming from a Bleach fan lol.

It seems like you did a lot of cherry-picking with Kubo. I can think of tons of panels from late in the series where the characters are just as expressive as early in the series, even in panels from the same scenes you showed. And a comedy scene vs serious scenes is just a bad comparison. That said, Kubo clearly wasn't putting much effort into the less important panels later on (due to his failing health). But the panels where he did put in effort are better than ever.

@@PopCross oh absolutely, Bleach as a whole is a series of "what-ifs" from start to finish - what if Kubo had been given breathing room and time to recover from his illness, what if publishers hadn't pushed him to speed through or slow down certain things for the sake of money, what if he hadn't had to censor his own art at certain points (for example, the last arc has a guy getting absolutely shredded to the point where he loses most of his organs and the back of his ribcage is visible, Kubo had to redraw that in the volume release because it was so extreme). If you ever want to cover him again and focus more on things like composition and color choices, though, I can absolutely recommend a lot of his color spreads. Lemme know if you want a link to a collection of them.

Great video love it, have been binging a lot of these video's and the pasion with which you talk about art is very appealing, I appriciate art but as the consumer, the final product is often kimmed over when the story is too good, I'm often rereading good stories slower so the artwork can come to life more easily and then there are works of art that take your breath away when you flip the page the artwork of tite kubo very much falls under the first category. I loved the story and the artwork got very little attention whenever I got a new chapter, I devoured it. Only much later I went back and got the appriciation that I hold still. I never read any amarican comics, my knowledge on the marvel and dc universe is good enough to talk with other people about and watching a few movies and review video's defffinitly helped with that but the art of Tim Sale for example that is brought up in the video is something I didn't really expect from comics, I had a much more cookie cutter expectation of the western comics. so thanks for this experience.
