The post pop-punk era Sum 41 is very interesting. What's funny about this cover is that this performance is AFTER their guitarist that brought the metal influences to some of their earlier stuff left the band (Dave Baksh). They had a pretty heavy album in Chuck (2004), then Dave left in 2006 and Sum 41 made the "softer", more pop-rock/punkier Underclass hero (2007) while claiming that the "metal phase is over". Many thought that Sum 41 would follow the same softer trend Linkin Park and many other punk and rock bands were, and they had every reason for doing it too. Instead they did the opposite. First they started covering Metallica more during their live shows like this one and "For Whom the Bell Tolls", and then a couple years later went on to create Screaming Bloody Murder (2011) which easily rivals Chuck as the heaviest album they have ever released, still without their metal loving ex-guitarist Dave. In 2013 their original drummer left the band and in 2014 their frontman and vocalist Deryck Whibley's kidneys collapsed from long-time heavy alcohol abuse and many thought the band was over. While this was happening, Dave had listened to Screaming Bloody Murder on his own (2011), and realized that he "should not have left this band" and contacted the band for the first time in many years behind the scenes. In 2015, Sum 41 played some shows with a new drummer and during one of them, Dave made a guest appearance. Later that year they announced that Dave was permanently back in the band, WITHOUT kicking his original replacement, meaning they now have 3 guitarists. 2 albums later and they have maintained their "rock with metal influences"-sound, which makes them stand out in my opinion.

Biggest Metallica fan in the world here. Listened to dozens of covers. This one tops 'em all. Trivium's version was good, but it sounded rushed. This one's live, and right in the fuckin' pocket. The rhythm is so spot on, I thought I was hearing an unmixed version of the studio version. Plus I love how Deryck threw in James' live bit right at the end of the second verse. These guys are way more metal than anyone gives them credit for. Truly well played Sum 41! 🤘🏻😆🤘🏻

spaceinbetween Nearly every band in pop punk listens to metal. Hell, two members of Neck Deep were in hardcore bands and they covered Slipknot and even had Sam from Architects on a song. Misfits and Metallica even did tributes to each other back in the day. The communities may not get along perfectly, but a lot of bands are friends.

Stop calling Sum 41 a Punk Pop band. Do you have ANY fucking music knowledge? Have you listen to their last album or Chuck? Chuck is very, very heavy (I have two Metal bands, I do singing and play bass and guitar in them); based on the music, and the vocals are not that heavy, which gives to the album a very rare tone. Screaming Bloody Murder is a dark album, they are no pop punk band no more, All Killer No Filler times ended a while ago, the same with Underclass Hero. And to all ''true metalheads'' in the comment section: Sum 41 has played with Judas Priest, Metallica and more bands. The where the last band playing in a homenage to them before the official return of Metallica as a band (seconds later). Have-Some-Respect to the fucking bands that are respected by those bands who you respect that much.

The feel, the energy, the drive, the timing, the tone, everything is there in spades. You can hear that they really listened to the original to capture all the nuances. The lead guitarist nailed James’s and Kirk’s solos and the drummer got all Lars’s fills down pat.
