i don't know why people are criticizing the vocals. his pitch is pretty much perfect. You can't ask a band to mimic the vocal style of the band they are covering, that would just be stupid. He sounds great.

To be fair sum 41 is incredibly talented, it’s just a shame they focused so much on bullshit radio friendly pop punk. Had they chosen to be a hair metal and metal band they’d have killed it and been much more respected as musicians than they currently are. The post pop-punk era Sum 41 is very interesting. What's funny about this cover is that this performance is AFTER their guitarist that brought the metal influences to some of their earlier stuff left the band (Dave Baksh). They had a pretty heavy album in Chuck (2004), then Dave left in 2006 and Sum 41 made the "softer", more pop-rock/punkier Underclass hero (2007) while claiming that the "metal phase is over". Many thought that Sum 41 would follow the same softer trend Linkin Park and many other punk and rock bands were, and they had every reason for doing it too. Instead they did the opposite. First they started covering Metallica more during their live shows like this one and "For Whom the Bell Tolls", and then a couple years later went on to create Screaming Bloody Murder (2011) which easily rivals Chuck as the heaviest album they have ever released, still without their metal loving ex-guitarist Dave. In 2013 their original drummer left the band and in 2014 their frontman and vocalist Deryck Whibley's kidneys collapsed from long-time heavy alcohol abuse and many thought the band was over. While this was happening, Dave had listened to Screaming Bloody Murder on his own (2011), and realized that he "should not have left this band" and contacted the band for the first time in many years behind the scenes. In 2015, Sum 41 played some shows with a new drummer and during one of them, Dave made a guest appearance. Later that year they announced that Dave was permanently back in the band, WITHOUT kicking his original replacement, meaning they now have 3 guitarists. 2 albums later and they have maintained their "rock with metal influences"-sound, which makes them stand out in my opinion.

I'm so disappointed that the Stranger Things hype didn't bring any more attention to this cover, I first heard it a couple years ago and was totally blown away, still listen to it regularly. It's in my opinion easily one of the best Metallica covers I've ever heard. Also, you should check out some of their other albums like Chuck (pretty much their ode to trash, with the song The Bitter End basically being a love letter to Metallica) as well as their newer albums. It's a shame people only know them for their few pop punk songs when they were first getting started, they've actually made some really damn good music since then. While the other bands of their era transitioned to pop Sum 41 got better and better.

Biggest Metallica fan in the world here. Listened to dozens of covers. This one tops 'em all. Trivium's version was good, but it sounded rushed. This one's live, and right in the fuckin' pocket. The rhythm is so spot on, I thought I was hearing an unmixed version of the studio version. Plus I love how Deryck threw in James' live bit right at the end of the second verse. These guys are way more metal than anyone gives them credit for. Truly well played Sum 41! 🤘🏻😆🤘🏻

Stop calling Sum 41 a Punk Pop band. Do you have ANY fucking music knowledge? Have you listen to their last album or Chuck? Chuck is very, very heavy (I have two Metal bands, I do singing and play bass and guitar in them); based on the music, and the vocals are not that heavy, which gives to the album a very rare tone. Screaming Bloody Murder is a dark album, they are no pop punk band no more, All Killer No Filler times ended a while ago, the same with Underclass Hero. And to all ''true metalheads'' in the comment section: Sum 41 has played with Judas Priest, Metallica and more bands. The where the last band playing in a homenage to them before the official return of Metallica as a band (seconds later). Have-Some-Respect to the fucking bands that are respected by those bands who you respect that much.

i’ve thought about this too, this was when dave was doing his own thing. they’re all metalheads really but dave was definitely the one driving for a more metal sound for the band. this would’ve been legendary if he never left the band in my opinion.

Well you need to know that Bruce lives where the Sex Pistols was once one of the greatest bands and they can't clearly play shit, specially Sid who can't do shit and still was famous for "doing music" so I can undestand why he said that. But Sum41 is now over the stereotype of the punk talentless band, they're professionals doing music, maybe not as fast or complex like Maiden or any other metal band, but what they do they do it nice and well executed.

If you remember Sum 41 as a pop-punk band, you probably haven't heard anything but tracks from "All Killer, No Filler" or "Underclass Hero." I seriously suggest you try "Does This Look Infected?" "Chuck," "13 Voices," and especially "Screaming Bloody Murder." You know, the bulk of their work.

Apart from this being probably the best full band live cover of this song, it is the best TONE this song has ever got. We all love Metallica, but we must acknowledge that their tone isn't the best, and I'm thrilled to finally hear this song with a fat and mid-boosted tight guitar sound for the first time, never thought I'd see the day

depends on what era you are talking about, but nah Metallica's tone in the 80s, 90s and even these days is better. This is just played slow so it sounds tighter. Amazing cover fr

@@liliajensen5429 when we talk about tone we mean how the sound of the instruments are dialled in on the amp, pedals and the guitar itself. It's how much bass, mids and treble you dial in the amp, it's what pickup the guitar is set to, it's how much distortion you dial in the pedal or amp, how much the reverb is dominant on the sound, etc. It's literally everything you can do to make the instruments sound just like you want them to

They killed it. This is a hard piece of music, intricate parts that require a lot of technique, time signature changes, tempo changes. To have each member of the band play his part so well individually and then the band collectively play it with such precision is impressive. The feel, the energy, the drive, the timing, the tone, everything is there in spades. You can hear that they really listened to the original to capture all the nuances. The lead guitarist nailed James’s and Kirk’s solos and the drummer got all Lars’s fills down pat. You can tell they’re big Metallics fans and playing this for Sum 41 is fun and an homage to Metallica. Incredible musicianship from start to finish.
