Alien 3 isn't about faith. It's about death. The finality of all things. Ripley's arc isn't about learning to have faith in anything, it's to accept her fate, her impending death, whilst saving millions of lives. In fact, almost every major character in the film chooses to die, or take actions they understand will result in their death. Ripley, of course, famously throws herself into a lake of fire. Dillon when he stays back to give Ripley a chance to get away, 85 when he futilely attacks the soldiers at the end, and Bishop who literally tells us he could be fixed, but he would rather be nothing than not top of the line. There's a reason why Alien 3's general color scheme is orange and red, rather than Alien and Aliens' blue and green. It's a movie set in purgatory, where characters burn off their sins before going up or down, or perhaps just into the void.

Forgive me, but I thought it was all about faith. Even the original concept which they borrowed from in the final movie deals with faith. Monks in a wooden planet far away from temptation, to prisoners who are almost believing the same way.

It didn't...say what one wants about any given film in the main franchise (not counting AVP) but it's still always retained its essence of looking at various strata of the working class under the bootheel of galaxy wide corporate oppression - almost every film is explicitly about groups of people we exploit and ignore. Alien is about "truckers." Aliens is about the military grunts serving private interests. Alien 3 is about the criminal cast we throw away and exploit. Resurrection gets even more bleak in that it tells us capitalist and military power still owns you even after you take yourself out of the equation. Prometheus and Covenant are about the misguided hopefuls who let their faith and scientific hubris become their downfall. And Romulus is about the children who grew up without a chance under the corporate boot, desperate to not end up like their parents. With Romulus being so new, and film discourse being so hot headed and myopic as it is - I already feel like people are being obtuse on purpose about it. The kids in that film are essentially already dead - inheriting the life of corporate slavery from their parents - a system and status quo so all-consuming it literally interprets your dreams (referencing Rain's intro scene in the beginning) so you can get up and produce. Romulus can be said to be a Gen Z story - not in the modern context of lingo and technology and all that - but in the sense that they're stuck with a failing system it us nigh impossible to get out from under - and any step to improve their situation can likely lead to more trouble. Despite quibbles about over-done fanservice (of which is pretty annoying) I think people are being far too quick to say Romulus "isn't about" anything. I think people are letting their cynicism regarding common trends in Hollywood filmmaking today stop them from viewing films on a holistic level. Here we an in-between-rebootquel that is, imo, largely very earnest in its attempt to be in conversation with previous entries in a smart and compelling way. The way it ties into Scott's prequel films is especially good imo. Here we see that even after all the misguided ambitions those in power have to acquire the literal source of life (referencing the goo from the prequels, obvi) to simply use it for their own gain...even after all of the destruction and death it caused...when the Company actually gets their hands on it all they can do is think to use it to inject their workforce with to prevent diseases they willingly expose them to in the first place - all to keep the bottom line going. A miracle cure for so many things...and its used to just keep the worker bees working.

This is an IGN/CineFix style article. Begin with a seemingly discrete yet massive presupposition as if it a fact and then disseminate. It pretends to be like a thesis, but it isn't. This is then presented as incisive pop culture and entertainment journalism.

*slow clap* Thanks so much for point all of these. I'd stand up if I could. General audiences like to reduce and decontextualize all alien entries to "but is it as good as aliens?" which is just plain general dumbness. I really like the alien franchise because it tries to say/explore something worth exploring - each in their own context- in the mainstream media landscape, instead of the general by the book good/evil plot line, which studio executives like to push. Should we expect another video in a few years called: when the alien franchise stopped being about human beings? Maybe. But until then...

One thing I really disliked about Prometheus is that it literally deified the "space jockey." I always liked the idea that the Space Jockey that the Nostromo crew found was just another working class schlub from a long-gone alien culture that came across the Xenomorphs and died, foreshadowing the Nostromo crew's eventual fate.

Deified and then forgotten. One of the most bizarre plot twists in story. You make a movie about the origin of humanity. You make your characters meet their Gods, then decide they are not so important after all.

I enjoyed the lofty themes, best exemplified by David and the plot of 'At the Mountains of Madness in space' despite some of the terrible writing; definitely had masterpiece potential but execution was fumbled by aspects of the poorly handled script.
@gregv3629

Something to take into account is that the story Chariot of the Gods was one of the earliest inspirations for the original Alien. So the stuff from Prometheus was always potentially there. It just so happens that one of the things that spoke to audiences more than anyone realized it would, was the extra flavoring conflict that Ridley Scott added to 79 Alien: class conflict. Once again, that’s the nature of a great movie. It takes a an almost mystical combination of artists plying their trade to create a truly great movie. Despite what studios want to be true, it’s an art, not a science.

The series has actually been pretty good about this. The idea is that each movie focuses on a particular class of people: Alien- blue collar logistical technicians* Aliens- military "warrior class" Alien3- the incarcerated Resurrection- career criminals Alien Vs Predator- freelance professionals AVP Requiem- suburbanites Prometheus- academic researchers Covenant- religious settlers Romulus- blue collar working class miners* ( *I think there's a lifestyle distinction here in that the "space truckers" are away form home for long periods of time while the "space miners" are stuck in one place.) Now that's not to say every movie actually did much with their particular variation on this theme, but they at least paid it some lip service.

Watched Romulus and it was such a breath of fresh air to return to roots of it being about workers with the twist that workers are basically treated like slaves, but the ending made me realize I'm completely sick of genetic modifications in these movies, did it make for good horror? Sure, did I care anymore at that point when they used it for more than just a plot about the corporation only caring about its investments? nope. Also loved the idea that there could be good androids as long as they're made by the workers

The company is such a looming presence across the first 2 movies that, when [spoilers] Ripley tells Hicks who's responsible and we smash cut to Hudson's rifle barrel coming up to Bruke's face with Hudson's venomous line, "I say we grease this rat #&@$ son of a b&@#$ right now", the marathon screening I attended in the late aughts erupted. People hate alien existential horror coming to wipe them out LESS than they hate slimy bureaucrats trying to "f@#& them over for a godda@ percentage". I even think Alien 3 is worthy. These movies are masterpieces.
@Malt454
@Malt454 3 ай бұрын
The upshot is, the movies are all about how the alien existential horror is going to kill them really only because of slimy bureaucrats trying to "f@#& them over for a godda@ percentage". From nosing around trying to get a xenomorph for the weapons development division, to creating homicidal androids that will sacrifice the crew to help get it done, humanity, in the form of the Company, is always its own worst enemy. Misery loves company and, where profit's involved, vice versa.

Human civilizations and advancements are founded on the cooperation and therefore mutual trust of our fellow man and woman. It's likely why we as humans are naturally hardwired to hate being backstabbed and screwed over by someone that we perceive as "one of our own" more than being defeated by what we consider a natural enemy.

Alien 1-3 is absolutely dealing with the same populace throughout the three films, juat different faces of it. Parker, Hudson and Morse all very much exist in the same society that does not care what happens to them. Alien Resurrection severs the bond between that universe and puts us in a cartoonish, popcorn universe built solely for audience reaction.

It’s hard for a writer to write about something they don’t know or worst don’t care about. When I see these Hollywood writer or even the writers for games I see college students that have not had to work from the bottom to the top. Unlike in the 70s you had young writers from blue collar family’s this is why if you look at tv most families that they show are almost always upper middle class and if they are poor somehow they are able to afford a home in an historic neighborhood. There’s a huge disconnect between normal people and these writers.

Honestly, Alien should have been the only one. Transforming the Alien into a "bug" with a queen ruined the mystique of the alien. It went from being an unfathomable, bioengineered horror to something that's easily defined. I really like how in the deleted scenes in Alien where Ripely discovers that her missing crewmates are slowly transforming into eggs. That's total body horror, far worse than having a big bug that lays them. Also, in Alien a man gives birth to it, whereas in Aliens it's a woman. One is a complete abomination while the other is more understandable when understood as a mother giving birth. Aliens is really the movie Them, complete with the military fighting giant bugs inside a nest.

In my opinion the space trucker theme and real life parallels are interesting only when its done the first time and during the time when the film was released. Trying to repeat the same theme and setting does not work again exactly because it was done at least once already (and the space trucker type of theme was done multiple times in the 70s and 80s by different sci fi movies). Just like repeating the uniqueness and originality of the first Alien film cannot be repeated , the space trucker thing also can't. Originality cannot be duplicated or it stops being original.

12:05 that's exactly what happened. I remember hearing that Ridley Scott was making a film that shared some themes with Alien, but wasn't in the same universe. Then as time went on, he decided (likely because 💲), let's make this an Alien prequel. The link feels shoehorned in, and not thought through. Ridley has always been vibes over plot details. He is all about the visuals, but don't think he cares that much about the plot.

I see the arc drifted with Resurrection. Mother was a euphemism for the Company's paternalism. Xenomorphs are monstrosities of motherhood (all the impregnation and bursting from inside you). That naturally leads into the topic of Creator/Created. But I agree with you. We need a return to space truckers. The real story is about corporatized capitalism. I liked Romulus but I'm not sure how relatable her relationship was with Andy. Can't say more without spoilers

People's attention span are too short these days. The set up is just important as the later action scenes that pay off just like Jaws, it dials up the tension gradually. . Alien at its core is always about the atmosphere, even alien 3 on the prison planet. So I did enjoy romulus even though it could never be as good as the 1st two, but still did a pretty good job doing classic alien. Weyland yutani is the faceless big bad corp, the more you explain the less interesting it gets. Prometheus and covenant have cool stuff but that's not the the route that interests me as an alien fan. Yeah, predator, alien, and Terminator would always be classics, scared the heck out of me watching as a kid.

People prefer it that way so they don't have to think about anything. In the OG Alien, nothing got explained. Movies stopped having that blue collar look because blue collar quit working on them. Anything before 95 basically looks blue collar, anything after is cgi. Star wars, robocop, alien, all look gritty because they are gritty, all the fx are made in warehouses by sweaty craftspeople, literally the saw dust and chaff probably literally make it onto the film, and it all gives it that boys in their garage look, and essentially thats what films were in that time, boys in their garage working on a go-cart. I could put up with the religious/creation themes and the shift in protagonist archetypes in Prometheus, even if I think they're poor choices, but in the end it was plain old poor character writing that pushed me to solidly dislike the movie. Covenant being a continuation of that meant it became the first Alien movie I just didn't bother to watch. Hearing about the fridging of Elizabeth Shaw certainly didn't help either. Alongside Resurrection (despite my love for both Sigourney Weaver and Winona Ryder), I just consider these new Ridley Scott stories to be irrevocably tainted. Even with Romulus supposedly returning to its roots with a theme park-ride style reference extravaganza, just knowing that things I hated about those previously mentioned movies worm their way into the new one is enough to kill my enthusiasm about watching it.

I feel like people don't remember all the themes of the first movie. It was never just about space truckers.

A small nitpick: there is no Director's Cut of Alien 3. David Fincher wanted nothing to do with the film after his frustrating experiences making it. The extended cut is called a Special Edition instead (like Aliens before it). It is superior to the theatrical cut, to be sure, but it's still pretty poor overall. Even Fincher's visual flair can't overcome the quality of the script and depressing tone.

Why is there never any Biological safeguard protocols in later Alien Movies? Did Astronauts suddenly forget how science works? Ridiculous especially Prometheus and Covenant. I can't believe it's the same director who produced the "Martian".

I would venture, it never was about space truckers. The title leads me to believe it was about a creature that was alien to them...

“When did the alien series stop being about space truckers?” The second movie. In Aliens, James Cameron’s 1986 follow-up to Ridley Scott’s 1979 space horror, it stops being about space truckers

It stopped the minute Cameron added a "$" after "Alien" in his pitch. The first film is art, the second is an action-centered cash grab, and the rest were half-hearted attempts at reinventing the franchise. Romulus took the worst route, which was load the film full of ham-fisted "social commentary" that was as generic as its plot. It lacked any soul, because it was added by studio execs whose creativity doesn't exceed their access to AI. As much as I love Aliens, nothing will touch the first film.

The title to this video implies the franchise is based around space truckers. But it was literally just the setup in the first movie. They were only truckers in the first one, it was just a plot point, not a theme. That's like asking, "when did Indiana Jones stop being about the Arc of the Covenant?" LOL
