4 is very personal for me. It came out when I was facing a really deep depression from a former job feeling like I didn't matter in the world. I saw it with my grandma. Last time I ever saw her (which I think we both knew) and it's my favourite Toy Story movie because it helped me move on. There's this one detail I think deserves a couple of wins and that's the different opening lines when the two girls pull Gabby Gabby's string. When Harmony pulls the string, Gabby says "I'm Gabby Gabby and I love you", but when the lost girl pulls it, she opens with "I'm Gabby Gabby. Will you be my friend?". And I think there's an important difference between the two. With Harmony, her approach comes off as desperate. Because she IS desperate. Gabby wants desperately to be loved, and feels like this is her only shot, so she wants to go all out. But love isn't just something that should be forced upon people. You can't just walk up to a stranger and say "Hi. I love you." They'll think you're crazy and reject you. With the lost girl, she's no longer being desperate. She's not thinking about being loved. She's thinking about making that girl feel safe, and her opening line reflects that. So she opens with "Will you be my friend?" because it's more inviting and more reassuring to a person who's lost and scared, than opening with "I love you." At that moment, Gabby finally was being selfless and learned what it means to be a toy: "It's not about being played with, it's about being there for a kid when they need you."

@@ninjanibba4259 It’s not like Woody left without telling them or feeling sorry. He will be an asshole if he left without feeling any regret and sorrow. However, you can tell he wants to stay with his friends because he is loyal to them. Buzz is the one who literally tell him it’s ok to leave because even he knows that’s what Woody truly wants. He wants his best friend to follow his heart for once, instead of being chained by his duties. How is that Woody betraying his friends if they are the ones who give him the blessing and encouragement to leave? And that whole argument of Woody leaving just because he simps for Bo? That’s not even the whole picture. Does Woody leave because he loves Bo? Sure. That’s one reason. Another reason is because he wants to start a new life. Bonnie doesn’t care about him, he can’t even fulfils his job to keep his kid happy. Woody said it himself, he is so obsessed with Bonnie is because he doesn’t know what else he can do as a toy. So when Bo shows up and shows him other way to be a toy and a new opportunity to explore the world, he takes it. Woody finally sees that Bonnie doesn’t need him, so he leaves because he wants to be happy. It’s just like you are working as a nobody in a company, you don’t want to stay that way so you venture out into the world when you see the opportunity to do so. Toy Story 4 was a better ending for Woody, who in many regards is the main character of the Toy Story series. His role throughout the films is basically a metaphor for the stages of parenthood. Toy Story 1 - How to deal when your kid no longer needs you to be the center their world. Toy Story 2 - The parental midlife crisis, thinking about what potential you had if you didn't have a kid, and then realizing that making your child happy is enough for you. Toy Story 3 - Letting go, when your kid is old enough to go off and be their own adult. Toy Story 4 - Empty nest syndrome, and how to cope when your life doesn't revolve around your kid any more. The third film was about knowing when to let go. The fourth film is about what to do once you've let go, thus actually completing Woody's story arc. > Toy Story 4 becomes less of an attempt to tie in previous themes Every one of the movies is thematically consistent, as they're all about Woody's purpose in life, be it having that feeling threatened, questioning if it's the right purpose, letting go of that purpose once he's no longer needed, or finding a new purpose for himself. Toy Story 3 is a better ending for the franchise but 4th is the better ending for Woody.

I saw Toy Story 1 and 2 as a kid a year younger than Andy, finished Toy Story 3 when I was an older teenager about to go to college, and saw Toy Story 4 as an adult. It felt so /right/ to see this outcome, because it ties up every little cliffhanger left by the end of TS3 and wraps it up for us adults who grew up with the series, while opening up a new universe for the kids and newcomers to the franchise. I remember that during the screening of TS3 a lot of kids and their parents walkd out of the theatre bc the kids didnt understand the plot (TS3 was definitely done for the millenials who grew up with the two previous movies), but with TS4 everyone was excited and all the kids wanted more. It's one of the reasons they retconned Bo-Beep's personality and relationship with Woody, in TS1 to 3 they were almost acting like a married couple while in TS4 she calls him her "boyfriend" and have this cutesy flirting that seems less mature and more about lovebirds finding each other after a long time. That is good, TS4 is like a rite of passage from us, adults, to the kids who can enjoy new adventures with Woody and Bo-Beep.

I have a particularly special connection to Toy Story, the series and I began our existence in the same year. 27 years later and I just watched this film for the first time yesterday, buying into the idea that it shouldn't exist because it was a perfect trilogy without it. But honestly? It wasn't. Not really. In 3 we had the concept of toys being forgotten, but.. not entirely. The chest that held them all was still kept in Andy's room, and he had loved and adored them enough to even play with them as a young adult, that one last time. But we didn't really look at toys that were just plain forgotten. Sat on a shelf collecting dust, lost in the back corner of a closet, etc.. I cried way harder to this film than I did to 3, and that's saying a lot considering the ending of 3. It might just be me, but I think exploring how a toy would feel at the prospect of being totally forgotten and unwanted, is immensely interesting, and, completely heart-wrenching. And in regards to your take on positions of privilege and the effect that has on people in reality.. well, I think it can be summed up with, "The higher you are, the farther you can fall." All in all, really enjoyed this movie, and the coincidental release timing is pretty great too because it's still so fresh in my mind. I didn't notice a SINGLE reference to other Pixar movies but now I won't be able to ignore the ones you pointed out!

11:36 Okay, now I'm genuinely curious. DO toys breathe air? Jesse clearly hyperventilates whenever the idea of getting tossed back into storage is brought up in 2, and even in this movie, when Woody gets his head smooshed by Bonnie's Dad's shoe, he holds his nose and exhales to puff his head back out. So either toy manufacturers go as far as to make their toys have toy organs inside their stuffing, a thought I don't like to think of but seems the most logical (which is also concerning), or when they come alive they somehow manifest human anatomy like organs and even muscle systems. It makes sense...sort of. Not really.

He literally got brainwashed twice and then had a TV thrown on his head before coming back only to face death by incinerator and what I’m sure was lots of trauma. I’m grateful he’s still coherent and not the toy version of Jack Nicholson at the end of One Flew Over CooCoo’s Nest.

It made no sense for him to want to leave with Bo after the climax of 2 when Bo was taken away. The entire point of 2 disproves that, through 2 he realises he doesn't need to be perfect and ponders his mortality, he doesn't need to be perfect to be loved, that's the point, so he gives up on leaving to be put in a museum because he values the love he shares with Andy and his friends more than he does being seen as a perfect toy, he wants to be there to see Andy grow up, which segways perfectly into 3's plot, the inclusion of Woody making a split second decision, which he soon takes back when he sees Andy looking for him, makes no sense between 2 and 3 given what he learned in 2 He doesn't need to be anyone's toy to be valued, and Bo shows that fine enough, but that's not what his personal values are Why would Woody want to leave with her after the way she treats him in 4? If anything, 4 could have been a good lesson on not feeling you owe people who you knew in your past anything, because people change, you might not gel with them after awhile, and that's okay!

@@lpsmurder The reason why she treated him like that was when she lost her sheep and was mad. Take this as an example: A mother lost her kids, its obvious that her attitude changes when things like this happen. The movie also had a meaning. Moving on, that was the meaning. This is my favourite of the set. To me, the first three really established the bonds between friends and making room for new people in your life, moving on from childhood. This one was to me, growing up. You hit that existential dread about life, you come to terms with the fact that you aren't the main character and your actions can help or harm those around you and reaching out can sometimes help save someone. It's also meeting your love and realizing you may not have as much time if anytime for the old friend group, and coming to terms with that loss.

I actually rewatched this movie for the first time after seeing this video pop up in my reccomendations and it was worth the revisit even if my opinions on it haven't really changed. I'm not entirely sure the movie needed to be made give how perfect the ending to Toy Story 3 was (my brother absolutely refuses to watch this movie because he loves that ending so much), but I really do love Woody's arc in this one. I remember watching it in the theater and thinking about how much it would ruin the movie if he didn't stay with Bo, but at the same time not wanting him to have to say goodbye to everyone. And I can't help but love how no one tries to talk him out if it and Buzz even reassures him that Bonnie will be okay, essentially giving him permission to go...I really could go on, but suffice to say I'm glad I revisited this one and remembered how much I love it.

I don't think it would have ruined the film if he hadn't gone with her tbh, it could have been a good lesson about not feeling like you owe anyone you knew in your past your loyalty just because you were once close, and it felt like Woody wasn't really given much of a choice, that it was inevitable that he HAD to go with Bo simply because he once loved her - its clear in 4 that Bo is not the same person she was before, she's changed for better or for worse, and from what I see she doesn't gel with Woody anymore, down to being overly critical and even verbally abusive to him He doesn't need to stay as anyone's toy to be valued, but imo that just isn't within Woody's own personal values, however, it is Bo's own values, and if this film does anything right its that it shows the difference in those values and that neither are wrong for wanting what they have, Woody didn't need to be the one to tell the audience that just because he's the main character

Touching back on Bonnie's first day of school I really appreciate the continuity of her being a shy kid (i.e. the scene in Toy Story 3 when she doesn't want to talk to her mum's... coworker? Mum friend? I really can't remember who the adult is, but you probably remember the scene). They could have easily just switched up her personality for the sake of the story, as she can seem quite flamboyant when playing with her toys, but it's also great that there was some kind of link between the two films, since there is already quite a lot of disconnect from one to the other, and it almost feels like payoff. Like, obviously they weren't setting up the plot of 4 in 3, because I doubt they even knew there was gonna be a 4, but it still makes them feel much more connected.

Kids go through that development cycle at the age she was at where they naturally decide what toy is their favorite. Also I highly doubt Andy would bother coming back for his favorite toy if he's going to experience new shit by himself and get a girlfriend or boyfriend who would probably fill the role of comfort that Woody provided when he was a kid.

One win I wish you mentioned, in the scene where Gabby Gabby is explaining her situation to Woody and Forky in the carriage, there’s a song playing in the background on a record player that briefly gets focused on for like a second. That song is called “Midnight, The Stars and You” which is also known as the song that plays at the end of the Shining. Not only does it add to the creepy atmosphere to people who’re familiar with the song, but also ties back to the first movie where the floor of Sid’s house had the same carpet patterns as the Overlook hotel from the Shining. Idk, I just thought that was cool. But anyways, great video as always Lee. I’ve wanted to hear your thoughts on this movie for a while primarily because Toy Story 4 is probably the most controversial of the series (which TBF, I get) but I also remember really loving it when it came out, especially Woody’s arc and conclusion. I guess I just wanted to hear some thoughts on this movie that wasn’t just “IT BETRAYED THE SERIES’ MESSAGES!” for the hundredth time. I just love this one so much ! Which is weird, because I really grew up with the first three ones, and I knnow a lot of people were disappointed, but I love this one evevn more than the third. Woody was always my favorite character, and this really is HIS movie ! The ending almost feels like someone accepting that he can finally retire from his career and happily move on to an other step in life. A bit sad you didn't mention Woody giving his sheriff star to Jessie, I ugly cry every time I see it.

Love your videos.. Almost always agree with your take on things, especially baby driver... I usually don't comment on things but felt the need to aks you for an ega about "everything everywhere all at once" i have a feeling you'll enjoy that one... The directing, The acting, The music, The action, the comedy, The overarching message... It's all dialed up to eleven... It's been quite a while since a movie made me feel things like this one did... Just.. Throwing it out there! In any case.. Keep em coming please!

If you don't make a video for Everything, Everywhere, All At Once, I might cry. Literally would be the most content rich "Everthing Great About" video ever. just so much to adore. Plus, the boost a great movie from a smaller studio would get from being featured on a channel like yours would go a LONG way

Toy Story 3 was the perfect ending to Andy's story. Toy Story 4 is the perfect ending to Woody's. Sequels can get pretty tiring, but I'd be perfectly OK with them continuing with Bonnie and Buzz. Though given Tim Allen's reputation these days, it might be unlikely.

Just watched it for the first time with my son. We binge watched the first 3 yesterday and finished with 4 today. I grew up watching the series and I felt like an old man watching them again. I will say with rewatching them, this could the best movie series that I have ever watched. Never was the biggest fan, but the consistency and relevance of all of the movies along with the plot references from all movies, in a way that’s not redundant, made me very excited to watch 4. That’s tough to pull off with 4 movies but it didn’t disappoint and I was very impressed! I may or may not have cried at the ending 🥹

Lotso was given a chance a chance for redemption when he was going to hit the emergency stop button to stop the Andy’s toys from going in the incinerator and if he had just pushed the button he would’ve redeemed in the same manner as Gabby Gabby and even after he let them burn in the incinerator the toys didn’t give him the punishment of being strapped to garbage truck the driver found him and put him on the back of his truck like garbage truck drivers sometimes do to toys irl and when Hamm and Slinky wanted to punish Lotso, Woody says “forget it guys, he’s not worth it.” So why is it wrong for Gabby to get a redemption but not Lotso who did way worse things and showed no sympathy unlike Gabby to be given a chance for redemption?

I had a build a bear Toothless that had a custom recording in it, after the years it started to dye and when youd press it it would be a garbled demonic mess, the only issue I had with that was the fact that it would go off randomly sometimes lol, sometimes, multiple times lol. Some people would find that demonic voice box endearing lol

I didn't enjoy this film as much as I wanted, but I still had fun. Also, we have to acknowledge that we got one last run with Don Rickles even if it was all archival recording. And I will miss Estelle Harris as Mrs. Potato Head. It's voices like theirs that are iconic and irreplacable. And are we finally getting Everything Great About Eternals? I sure hope so.

I know some people hate that this movie exists, and while I personally don’t really understand why it exists (though CW did a great job of making it a little more clear) I still very much enjoy it and it makes me cry like a baby. Every time. Even while watching this video the same beats still got me going. I honestly look forward to seeing if they do anything else with this franchise. I don’t need them to, but I’d be curious to check em out if they did.
