The shark roasting Woody is for some reason one of my favorite movie moments of all time. Something about a shark wearing a cowboy hat, his face being kind of emotionless because of the type of toy he is, and the fact that his impression is just him going "howdy, howdy, howdy," impacted me so much as a kid that over 20 years later I'll just say that line aloud sometimes and laugh to myself. Or do it if I see a cowboy hat, or any funny hat at all. I love that shark 🤣

Now that I'm older and understand more, that moment at 12:57 "Take care of Andy for me" "Nooooooo!". It's like a 5 second clip and my eyes start watering. Woody was about to give up. The one question I always have about the whole sentient toy thing is how do _building toys_ work. Like Lego and its many clones. They're designed to be pulled apart and reassembled, as are the figures. A lot of minifigs on the usual sets are just ciphers, but move into their licensed and story-based themes and you get actual characters. If someone pulls apart their Ninjago or Monkie Kid minifigs and reassembles them into new characters, how does that _work?_ Moreover, how does _Bionicle_ work? The entire purpose with those sets is creating specific characters, but I've got shelves full of Bonkles and not a single one of them is an official set, they're all characters of my own design.
@BonaparteBardithion
@BonaparteBardithion 2 жыл бұрын
Toys like blocks are probably nonsentient like the checker board. As for toys with exchangeable parts, we see what happens in the form of the Potato Heads. At first I thought there's a core toy (the body) that counts, but Potato Head seems to be equally in control of all his parts. When he gets scattered his lips speak on their own. When he trades out features the new pieces take over mobility. He replaces his entire body with a tortilla and still functions. He and the Mrs. get scrambled once and are able to tell which feature is who's, plus Mrs. can use her disembodied eye from several blocks away. So, does that mean that scrambled toys would all be in a perpetual state of multiple people experiencing several angles and positions at once? Would they trade all the parts back and then rescramble when the kids return? One question they never address is what happens when you buy an accessory pack for a Potato Head, when there's no base body for them. Maybe they're able to permanently exchange parts with each other and transfer bits of whatever counts as their soul between them.

In the context of Lego and it's figures, I'd like to think the head is the 'sentient' part that controls the body it gets attached to. We do see Minifigures in either Toy Story 3 or one of it's short films

I think that the Lego Minifigures' consciousness would be tied to their heads, so the rest is interchangeable. Also, they're actors. Whichever character they're dressed as is the character that they're acting, so they're actually independent of the characters they portray. If you switch the heads on two minis, they are just switching their roles in the "play". Also the bricks themselves would be nob-sentient.

This movie is one of my earliest memories as a kid. My grandmother had put it on for us on vhs and I remember buzz being the coolest thing I’d ever seen! In the scene where buzz shows up he’s told us we yelled out BUZZ in pure excitement and how he’s always been brought back to those days whenever he watches it with our younger siblings even now. Moment of awesome: *-The movie itself.* Keep in mind what CGI was to the moviemaking industry in the 1990s. Jurassic Park only came out two years prior, and CGI was firmly in the action movie genre's grasp. It wasn't a kid's movie thing, it was a workaround to make scenes that would normally be impractical, impossible, or just too expensive to accomplish with practical effects alone. People simply didn't think CGI could be a cartoon, or that it would be so good at it. It revolutionized animation and cinema, put Pixar on the path to becoming a household name and a cinematic Seal of Approval-and it did so with basically just wit and heart. a) *The cherry on top is how well Toy Story has aged after nearly 30 years.* Time has definitely worn on it, but take into account CGI's notoriously short shelf life, and the fact that it's still watchable at all is impressive.

Definitely has to do with Pixar's early focus on toys. The early CGI looks plastic and inorganic, which makes ugly humans (the baby from Tin Toy *shudder*) but it works for the Toy Story cast. Plus, they'd already had a lot of practice animating toys from their previous shorts, so they could focus more of their experimental work on figuring out how to make the humans not look like nightmares.

I think 4 is such a divisive movie bc it's the only sequel that didn't really have a purpose. 2 shows Woody's backstory and begins to show the complex emotions of kids growing up, 3 expands upon those complex emotions and shows the multiple paths a toy might take, but 4? The core idea is a really weird combination of the others that just doesn't work as well. It does have interesting ideas in it, I love the concept of a broken toy, but it didn't know what it wanted to do and ended up a bit of a mess. It can be enjoyed, but like in the same way people can enjoy Puss in Boots

Honestly the biggest win is the fact that Toy story was animated without inverse kinematics (an animation system that lets you keep a part like a hand, or a foot, in place, while you move everything else) which is super impressive because that means everytime anyone touches the floor, or a prop, or another toy, they had to specifically make sure they weren’t clipping in an obvious way.

This movie came out a few months after I was born, and it’s been a big part of my life all these years. This movie takes me right back to my earliest memories, and it’s still so wonderful to me as an adult. I will say maybe because it takes me back, this movie definitely works in making you feel as vulnerable as a toy. You relate to the toys’s fear of being abandoned because everyone is afraid of that. And as a child you can relate to how helpless the toys seem sometimes since children, just like toys, don’t have agency in their worlds. Honestly I would’ve made a 3 part Endgame style video if this was my channel haha. But you still nailed it.

Even more interesting is the hint in Three that each kid’s toys run things differently. Andy’s toys act like it’s a job, meanwhile Bonnie’s toys treat it more as a theater troupe; Buttercup tells Woody “We do a lot of improv here, just stay loose and have fun, you’ll do great.” and then Mr. Pricklepants asks if he’s “classically trained”.
