Related to the question you raise about where is Mecca, is the question as to the location of al-Shu'ayba, the port of Mecca. It is from this port that the early Muslims fled persecution in Arabia to the overseas Aksumite Kingdom in Africa, as well as the port from which a naval force was launched early in the Islamic period against sea raiders. The port was at some point abandoned in favor of Jeddah, but when this happened and where al-Shu'ayba was located is a vexing question, and one addressed by Hawting (Hawting, G. R. (1984) ‘The Origin of Jedda and the Problem of al-Shu’ayba’, Arabica, 31(3), pp. 318-326.) and Pedersen (Pedersen, R. K. I thank these fine scholars for educating us about potential discrepancies in the Islamic historical account. While studying these videos , I came across a very well documented rebuttal to Crones careful analysis, and am also reading that, which is called, "A Response to Patricia Crone's Book" by Amaal Muhammad Al-Roubi. Since Patricia Crone's material is so damaging to Islamic history, I want to make sure that both sides of this discussion are represented. I wonder if Dr. Jay Smith has read and studied the findings of Amaal Muhammad Al-Roubi and, if so, would like to tap his knowledge and wisdom in this matter. Blessings.

there are always going to be responses, and then counter responses and then part 4 and part 5. we need to give research into the early years of Islam a couple hundred years before we can start to make genuine judgments as to what might be true findings regarding that era-if the Muslims haven't destroyed all the hard evidence and/or assassinated every scholar by then. I would suggest something like the Oxford Intro to the Quran as a starting point to evaluating Crone, etc

It makes no sense. Surah 2:93 explicitly say that "Bekkah" is the Holy City, Mekkah. Then of the "great mosque" currently known and identified as Kabaah. It doesn't say ianythonh about it. It does not confirms it. It sounds like a later injunction as you said.

Llyne M sorry it is ayat (verse) 96. "96. Indeed, the first House [of worship] established for mankind was that at Bakkah [i.e., Makkah] - blessed and a guidance for the worlds." This is how their tradition interpret. This is from the English translation Sahih Internatiional.

Yeah it makes no sense the kabaah should be in mekkah. It was pointing Jerusalem, "The Temple" David referred to in the Psalms. Surah 3:181 Muhammad was bullied by the jews at the time. Could it be that he did to get back at them?

many ancient mosque build by ordynary perople who have no knowledge to find a perfect direction to mecca, until these days in my country there are so many mosque that show an imperfect direction but that no means their fault as a bad indication of something else but just a commonly mistaken by uneducated mosque construction for pesist good direction to Mecca, pls do not exagerated such unimportant thing like these, The Qibla is always lies deep in our heart, ... :) nobody can change it. Mahmud Sumait nice try, but the early mosques consistently faced Petra. Arabs were very good at navigation by stars- thats how they traveled through the desert. Just face facts. Islam doesn't add up.

Yes I finally understand what you are saying now. And I will have to disagree. Most muslims simply rehash whatever their imam says. I have spent more than 75% of my time in middle east since 2002. Talk with muslims on a daily basis. Most do not have a clear understanding of islam. And usually I must wait a day or two until they can ask someone else for the answer. (I know many Christians do the same thing.) You must know what you believe and why you believe it....not just because that is what you are taught. Because the lies are taught generation after generation. Irregardless of what religion or doctrine one believes, constantly search for truth. We are now in Ramadan and maybe almost half cheat. In small ways, but still....
