When you’re talking with her at the little circus camp or whatever it was called and she mentions she wishes she could live a normal life, with that said, I doubt she would like the life of an empress. I get the feeling being in a position of power is one of the last things she would want, especially since she’s already probably sick of being in a position of power regarding her elder blood. With the life of a witcher, she has it laid back in comparison.

I've always thought her becoming a witcher is the best ending for Ciri. Shes finally free to do what she wants and no be burdered by the greater picture, politics or destiny. I do however think the empress ending is the best for the world though, as she would have made a good ruler and helped to bring actual peace.

She has no special attachment to it, nor does she feel any particular obligation to it. And don't confuse "personal pleasure" with being happy with your life. Besides, she saved the whole fucking world at the end of Witcher 3 - if anyone's earned the right to lead a life that makes them happy, it's Ciri. Of all the endings to The Witcher 3, the Witcher ending is the only one where Ciri looks happy. Also, fuck Nilfgaard.

Responsibly and obligation isn't measured universally but rather measured by the capability of the individual thus her having the right to live a life that makes her happy is sadly debatable. The less that hangs on your shoulders the more right to happiness you have, I know it sounds stupid but imagine if say a major god decided to go get some milk but didn't return. Their absence would cause the fabric of reality to turn on its head so logically the greater the power the more responsibility.

I get the appeal, I really do. I just can never bring myself to go that route; the best ending for everyone is with her as Empress. The ending it invokes is also right up my alley since I'm a sucker for bitter-sweet endings. Sure, everything seems butterflies and rainbows with the Witcher Ciri ending except the nation suffers as a result, and I hate butterflies and rainbows endings. Just seems kind of a cheap cop-out in a world that already displays so much suffering. This isn't Hyrule; It's "The Continent" (bizarre no actual name for the world has ever been mentioned as far as I know lol) and I just feel like the ending should reflect that of the world we inhabit when we play this game. Dark, mostly depressing, but noticeable good in the world worth fighting for.

Also if you pay attention Vesemir mentioned that the Witcher Schools (or at least the Wolves) were on the side of Radovid, so it makes sense that they would let Radovid rule.

Again, Butterflies and rainbows for us, not so much for the denizens of this world. Remember that if you decide to take take Ciri to see her father, she ultimately realizes she has a responsibility to the people, and throwing it away for a life of butterflies and rainbows with Geralt was unethical in her opinion. This is why, once she realizes the actual ramifications of her actions upon visiting the emperor, her father, she changed her mind. In regard to Radovid: I never saw how his rule was ever supported by anyone in the game. No one Geralt knew liked him or wanted him alive. Once Geralt met him himself, it was essentially shown the man's a psychotic monster, albeit a tactical brilliant one. Still his death is better for literally everyone alive according to the game's ending credits, as long as Ciri is in control of Nilfgaard. Edit: I see your love of the Witcher is on par with mine; I genuinely enjoy these types of conversations. I'm not disagreeing with you, just throwing out my opinions because this is my favorite form of discourse. I'm so sick of political, religious, etc debates these days.

It really depends how you look at it. If you're thinking about Ciri (and Geralt, I suppose), the "best" ending for them is probably the witcher ending. However, Ciri becoming empress is the "best" ending for the realm, as she'd surely be a better leader than her father. As far as what the "real" ending is, I actually think it's the empress ending. Not because it's my preference (I prefer the witcher ending), but because the witcher ending takes away Ciri's ability to choose. If you don't take her to her father, being a witcher is really the only option left for her. But if she speaks to her father, at least then she knows there are two paths to take, and chooses leadership on her own.

The Empress ending just seems to be so fitting for the themes of the Witcher 3 and of the whole franchise. Her and Geralt have a father daughter relationship, but it’s not like you can stay with your parents forever. This is coming of age story for Ciri where she proves she’s a full grown adult. So she takes responsibility for the world, stops the White Frost, and decides she can steer Nilfgard away from imperialistic warmongering. Plus, while I don’t think the Witcher ending is terrible, it does feel like Ciri is just running away from her problems for the dozenth time. Then there’s the fact that this franchise just isn’t about happy endings. It’s about grim reality in a fantasy setting, and while it can have happy endings it usually has bittersweet or sad endings. Ciri leaving to become Empress seems more realistic than the Witcher endings happily-ever-after vibe.

I know. i tend to lean tords the bitter sweet ending because it Seems like the best possible outcome. Ciri doesn't die, she becomes the EMPRESS. And can visit Geralt whenever (Lady of Time and Space, remember?) She's absolutely right that she can't change things one village at a time-Geralt has done that his whole life and just about keeps his head above water and can only save individual folk. All of your actions in Witcher 2 did not and could not stop the high level tragedies. The only major positive changes he accomplishes? Keeping Ciri alive and centered. They live in a crapsack world, and Ciri on the throne has the decency, the political intelligence, the powerful friends (Geralt, the sorceresses etc.) and the personal power (probably the most powerful being in their world) to actually fix things. Yeah, they're a little bummed that they won't get to frolic as witchers forever, but honestly, that's Geralts calling. Ciri really is meant for greater things. "This is her story". What a bore and a waste if she were to take griffon contracts her whole life and die to a vampire at some point. besides at the end of blood and wine with Geralt and Yen (yen and shani [romance her in Witcher 1] are the only ones i romanced) living at Corvo Bianco ciri would be able to visit anytime she wants

Honestly, I feel the canon ending for Ciri is the one where she dies, not the witcher ending, nor the empress ending. Ciri's story is all about destiny. And that destiny isn't just bound to Geralt. It's bound to Ithlinne's Prophecy. When Ciri breaks that prophecy, preventing the White Frost, her fate is sealed, her place in the world forfeit. It makes bittersweet sense that she would die saving the world.

Each different story / outcome is self-contained depending on the decisions the player makes, this is further outlined with the fact that you can port over save files from The Witcher 2. Read one fan theory that I though was interesting. SPOILER- All endings happen- Geralt arrives at the Bog kills the crone and gets surrounded by the monsters. Ciri appears and kills all the monsters which is a lot but she has insane power and who knows what happened while she fought the frost. She gets Vesimir's medallion back and becomes a witcher. She eventually begins to feel a bit out of place and meets Geralt at White Orchard to tell him she chose to take the place as Empress.

In the books she is constantly calling herself a witcher, everyone calls her "the witcher girl" and at the very end she states how there should plenty of things for a witcher to do in her new world. Ciri is no empress. She doesn't like Emyrh, she doesn't like Nilfgaard, she cares nothing about being some monarch, yet she loves travel and adventure. It's not even close in my opinion.

For those saying that witcher Ciri makes the most sense I'd like to offer some evidence to the contrary. Although witcher Ciri may seem like the warmest ending and perhaps the least painful it really isn't. 2 of 3 possible endings for Geralt have him moving away and basically retiring from the witcher profession. Which means that Ciri will eventually have be on her own anyway. Ciri being taught by the best witchers and being very smart as well as very powerful would no doubt make a great witcher. However, after learning of her heritage and her bloodline she ends up deciding to take her rightful place as queen where she feels she can do the most good. I feel that Ciri had to go through all of that witcher training and everything else she endured so that she could become the person she needs to be. Her experience in other worlds also allows her a perspective few other rulers possess. And if shit really hit the fan she could even fight on the battlefield for what she believed in. I feel that the game even gives us a small clue as to what path is best for her when the crone Weavess takes the medallion Ciri was wearing, hinting at least to me, that she should eventually leave that life behind.

At the end of the day, with both the witcher and empress options laid out in front of her, she *chooses* to become the empresses on her own.

It's actually not known if Pavetta was killed by Emhyr or if she was thrown overboard by the storm that had been playing out at sea. Considering his attachment to Ciri long after Vilgefortz was dead and his plan foiled, I'd actually weigh in that Pavetta was NOT killed by Emhyr, and, to go a step further, that he regrets her death and, I think truly loved her.

You say yourself in this video you can't fight destiny, FudgeMuppet. Ithlinne's prophecy states "The world will die amidst frost and be reborn with the new sun". The "new sun" is likely talking about the ascension of Empress Ciri to the throne of the Nilfgaardian Empire (aka The Great Sun). I think destiny is placing Ciri on the throne, and the bitter-sweet ending is most in line with what was foretold in the prophecies of old.

It’s kind of funny how the worst ending is actually the best and most profound in terms of symbolism and story elements. Seeing Geralt lose his humanity and retiring for the last crone just shows how empty he is without Ciri and to add on top of that the way he dies is a reference to the line that’s been said multiple times throughout the game “A witcher never dies in his own bed.” In terms of depth and symbolism the worst ending for the characters and us is actually the best and most fitting one.

Witcher 3 Ends with Ciri going into that portal and then suddenly one of 3 endings. I personally believe/hope that there will be a Ciri game starting when she enters that portal. I think she had her own epic solo adventure in a different world which is her true destiny while her return to Geralds world is only her retirement.

Honestly, it'd be way more suiting to Ciri's canon storyline in the novels, and would be awesome. But there is some hope. CDPR have stated they intend to keep the property rolling, but Geralt's story is finished.

First of all, great video Drew. You always do a great job of delving deep into the lore of the games you analyze. I'd like to disagree with you however on what the best ending for Ciri is. You yourself said that what matters is what she wants, what she chooses. In the game the only way to get the witcher ending for her is if you don't take her to meet her father. How can she make a valid choice then if she doesn't know all of her options? In the empress ending, Ciri chooses to make the harder choice and leave everything she's ever known and the person she loves more than anyone else, because she believes she can do the most good as an empress.

A little correction - Ciri can end up as a witcher, even if she goes to meet Emhyr - just let Dijkstra live and the traitor Roche die after you assassinate Radovid. In my opinion, if Geralt really cares for the wellbeing of Ciri, and wants her to have a peaceful and independent life, he will not let Nilfgaard win the war. If Emhyr is triumphant, the Nilfgaardian spies will find Ciri's whereabouts sooner or later. She will be able to thrive only witihin the boundaries of a unified Northern Empire, where nobody will persecute her for her royal lineage and she will be far away from the grasp of the southern imperialists.

Finally a game where we get to play as obi-wan Kenobi. Seriously. Gerlat and obi-wan watch their respective ward/child/apprentice from a distance, try to move them down the right path while wanting to make sure that their protectorate don't follow the same path they did. While watching over their younger counter part they kill monsters from afar to make the world safe enough that this child with the potential of a god has a chance to grow up. When I say that obi wan didn't want Luke to be a Jedi, I mean not in the same way that he was a Jedi. He knew that the order that created him is one that belongs in the past.

Hmmm, I hope we can have a civil discussion here, so, hear me out. The condition "Make at least three out of five “positive” decisions" is the same for the two good endings, so let's put that aside. Having made those decisions, Two things trigger the empress ending, namely: 1. Bring Ciri to the Emperor and 2. Ensure Nilfgaard wins the war. And one thing triggers the witcher ending: 1. Do not bring Ciri to the Emperor. Now, It seems to me, that if you take ciri to the emperor, and nilfgard wins the war, Ciri still HAS THE CHOICE to become a witcher and stay with Geralt. In this case, she has two choices, and she CHOOSES to become the empress. While if you don't take her to Emyr, she simply DOES NOT HAVE the choice to become the empress. So, I would say the empress ending is the good ending for HER, while the witcher ending is the good ending for YOU, not even Geralt, but YOU, the player, who might be a little selfish, and want to keep this dear beloved near. But if you stop thinking about how you feel, and start caring about how SHE feels, you would agree that she at least deserves to have a choice between the two, and as I mentioned, given the two choices she chooses to be the Empress.

Well said. I feel the same way. She chooses to be empress because she knows she can do the most good for the world in that position. This was true when she decided to fight the white frost as well. Even with the witcher ending she will go her own path and begin working out from under geralts shadow. Ciri grew up and it was time to let her write her own story.

I hope the Witcher 4 is all based on Ciri, and that Geralt and the rest have cameos... Although the guy that wrote the books and refused backend for the games for an upfront lump sum, ($11,000 US I believe?) Is now suing for millions... Might be the end of the Witcher games? The Netflix show looks like bad cosplay, but I'm hopeful that it'll be decent to good.

I have problems with Ciri in the story. At the end, she just jumps straight to trying to end the white frost out of nowhere and makes a crack about Geralt not knowing about saving the world. Now shes off saving the multiverse.....and how does she do it? It's especially funny coming from the girl who constantly needs saving and can't control her powers. She then if successful returns and then it's like she doesn't have any powers, no mention. No one saying anything. Elf bro just disappears....

In order to reach the witcher ending Geralt needs to make decisions for Ciri. He takes Ciri the chance to decide for herself if she wants to become empress. If Geralt does not take Ciri to the emperor she never has the opportunity to speak with him and to decide for herself if she wants to become empress or not. Ciri always hated if others made decisions for her and now you are trying to tell me the witcher ending is the true ending even though you have to take away choices from her? Nah man. In The Witcher 3 Ciri is always not happy that her life is pre set in a way that she cannot escape her destiny and she simply wants to do what she wants. In this video here now he says that Ciri as a child couldn't wait to hear that going with Geralt was her destiny? That is all kinda contradicting each other. Also Ciri will never be a true witcher. She has never and will never go through the trials. She cannot perform any signs. She cannot drink witcher potions. She has not been mutated and thus cannot use mutations in the same way witchers do. So even if she 'becomes a witcher' she actually never truly becomes a witcher. She will always only be witcher-like. Also she carries the elder blood. As a true witcher she would never have children, but she is clearly capable of having kids. But when and where would she raise kids or even give birth while being constantly on the road living the life of a witcher? There is a risk of the elder blood line dying out if she truly follows the path of a witcher. To me this all indicates that the life of an empress is more suitable. Also she has much more power and is thus able to positively impact many more people's life's as if she lived on the street helping one village at the time. Ciri always hated if others decided what's best for her. But if she becomes empress she can finally decide to do what she wants and nobody can stop her, not even her terrible father. The cut scene for the witcher ending might be much more upbeat and happy, but this in my opinion that is because we view it from Geralt's perspective and also because the developers have chosen to do it that way while leaving her positive impact on the realm kind of out of the picture because that is what is following later on but the cut scene we see is taken from a very specific moment and not showing any long time summary. It is kind of mentioned ina few sentences afterwards but the in-game cut scene is already over by that point. Also if what is said in the video, I would be kind of pissed at the developers as they don't explain Geralt's and Ciri's backstory that much in detail. I played through already once and I never heard before that Ciri was a gift given to Geralt by the law of the unknown. Not to mention given to Geralt twice. Another thing I would like to add: Geralt constantly breaks the typical witcher rules such as not to intervene in conflicts between people. He constantly does take sides breaking that rule. So if Geralt is already not a typical witcher in that regard, he could also simply decide not to force the law he has. Also by the end of the game Ciri is a grown woman, not a child anymore that others can simply decide for her what she has to do. In the empress ending she has decided it was best for the people to become ruler. She even decided not to tell Geralt in advance. Those are all her choices.

I just finished the game and had the empress ending, which initially made me doubt if I'd made all the right decisions. While being toned a bit sad of the (somewhat abrupt) ending and the fact that Ciri's fight against the White Frost was left unspoken in the game, I tried to read through subreddits and watch these vids. It really comforts me knowing that - and I think you have layed out some indisputable facts- the ending I had while making the decisions based purely on how I wanted the relation with Ciri to be, seems to be the most logical one. It is in line with Ciri's personality and will to make her own decisions and Geralts love for her. Soo, in short: thanks for your comment, now I can finally go to sleep somewhat peacefully

I don't know how anyone thinks the "witcher" ending for Ciri is the best, that ending can only be achieved by Geralt effectively robbing her of choice by not taking her to meet Emhyr, and so not trusting or allowing her to make her own choice about her life. The "witcher" ending for Ciri seems all nice, and for Geralt it is a nice ending as he will no doubt be far closer to Ciri as she spends the rest of her days wading through monster guts etc., but how is that the best ending for Ciri? I see this akin to parents wanting their child to join a family business so they don't allow them to apply to University, or destroy acceptance letters etc. stopping them going in another direction in life. Yes the parents are happy they have their child working with them, and the kid may end up being happy in their ignorance of what life choices they might have had, but they might have been more fulfilled or lived a more meaningful life having had true choice. In the "Empress" ending Ciri is of course sad to be leaving Geralt and the witcher life she has come to know, but she made that choice, she could have said no to Emhyr and lived the witcher life instead, but in the "witcher" ending she could only really be a witcher as thanks to Geralt that is the only option she really has. If being a witcher was Ciri's true destiny then would she not have chosen that path instead of becoming Empress? I like to believe Ciri was always destined for something greater than being just a witcher.

The story of Siri and Gerald is well such a wonderful pleasant thing I really believe you're right the best ending for Siri is as a Witcher she would obviously be much better off making her own decisions and doing good works when she was free as the empress sure she could do a lot but she wouldn't be able to get out there and actually go places and do things so being chained up versus being free it's kind of a no-brainer honestly the path that lead Siri and girl together along with all of the other people it's just a really heartwarming way for everything to come together things do work out the right way right out of a story book you could say
