I know I'm late by a little bit, but some reasonable numbers for small american schools, provided by the one I myself go to: It's a charter school, so a bit nontraditional in some ways, what with the full K-12 on one campus, and a semi-unique open design. Foremost to the staff parking lot and main entrance/exit roadways, there's the main office/library/cafeteria building. Behind that, the others ring a massive courtyard, with on the right a set of two connected gyms built as the same building but two effectively separate structures, and a few various required supporting rooms for them like spare classrooms, coach offices, equipment storage, locker rooms, etc. Those double as basketball courts, and volleyball courts, though there is one officially unused basketball court outside in the courtyard area for the students to use for fun. On the side of the gyms opposite to the courtyard is the high school parking lot and utility area, where there's two buildings collectively containing outdoor storage, indoor storage, a weight room, a small workshop, and some other random bits, as well as the parking area for the school's busses and a service road leading all the way down to the twin lacrosse and soccer fields and their stands. Back to the courtyard, opposite to the gyms (the section opposite the main administrative building is open to view the game fields), there's the three major school buildings: The sprawling 3-story 'Learning Center' for every single grade from Kinder to 8th grade; next to that is the set of 2 stacked hallways making up the majority of the high school section, specifically grades 10-12; and then there's what is jokingly referred to as 'freshman containment', which is a smaller dedicated building for 9th grade since they number at nearly 200 whereas seniors number around 80. Past the classroom buildings is the parking lot for parents and largest drop off zone on the campus, used for the learning center, since the high schoolers are officially considered responsible enough to walk across campus to the opposite parking area. So: One small external basketball court, unofficially used, with two gyms each able to become two small or one large basketball court (each has a central partition that can lower and 6 retractable hoops) as well as each being able to be a full-sized volleyball court. A track around one field and a slightly larger field lacking the track, the former of grass and the latter of turf, used in both lacrosse and soccer (we don't have football). And one main building for administrative and school-wide services, as well as two smaller supporting utility buildings with outdoor storage, and 2 small parking lots (one driving row with spaces on either side) and 1 medium parking lot (3 double sets of parking spaces, supported by another small parking lot we don't really use, this one's for the sports access as well). Finally, a very large central courtyard area with a walkway network, central fountain, and covered walkways at the edges, and this is for roughly 1200 students, give or take 200-300 at most (different years bring different student counts). The school is slated to continue to expand and was originally built over a ~14 year period starting only with portable buildings and the administrative one, subsequently building the auxiliary gym, then the then all-of-high-school building, then the courtyard and the second field (and bigger stands for both fields), then both the larger learning center and the main gym and most supporting rooms (doubling the size of the gym building, previously it was locker rooms and an office and the gym and nothing else and now it's a massive central hallway/eatery, both gyms, classrooms, internal storage, and a small belowground utility area), and then the freshmen building. It's in the middle of an expanding low-density residential area as the city sprawls past it and no less than 5 companies build well over a thousand houses each and offer tens of millions of dollars to people who own ranch fields in the area so they can keep building more medium suburbian houses. Massive amount of landscaping done with strange walkway angles, trees, and planters in the campus itself, and next to nothing in the parking areas.

Can we all appreciate the upgrade of the thumbnails of these videos. They look much, more unique and stand-out better, which is what you want in thumbnails.

idk about just plopping a pump right in the neighborhood like that. what i see most commonly in rural towns, outside of well water per household and water towers, is pumps and water transfer stations disguised as sheds in and around public parks. or rather, a small scale public works station disguised as a park. sneaky sneaky. i know that as a city planner you dont work at ground level often and that detailed work is generally left for more specialized people like architects or public works planners, whatever theyre called. but i think it should always be best kept in mind a few things: 1: is it visible (if no, good, if yes refer to step 2) 2: is it something id personally want next door/ does it make sense to be here/ have i seen it utilized over 5 times off print (if yes, place it. if no, refer to 3) 3: can it be moved away from people or hidden (if it can be moved, do so. if not, hide it.) it usually loops back to #1, hide it. this is the formula i use when planning cities in the game. i have the same habit of not looking at ground level often so i came up with that planner helper formula for us who specialize in helicopter planning.

There is a mod called parkify which will allow you to place any buildings along paths instead of roads

I like that when you are building these cities, you are also telling a story. It's so intriguing.

Man, you just casually dropped a bit of wisdom that floored me at 10pm on a Monday: "We will not let 'Perfect' become the enemy of 'Good.'"

You should really also add lighting for the football field and parking lots.

I love the idea of the fictional Ashland Family. The town I grew up in was a mill town owned by one family and to this day there are old "mansions" (realistically just bigger than average houses) outside of the town where the factory owners and managers all lived. :)

Great episode! Somehow I don’t like the look of these fields, they lack depth, especially the white ones

I just can't get enough of this american small town. But as a railfan I hope that once you get to rail transport you build a authentic network of stations, yards and rural spurs to places like Ashland. Maybe with some nice american trains from the workshop too.

Yes! There should definitely be a cargo rail line going along the state road
